Why does Iowa flat refuse to guard the 3 point line, especially on the backside. This has ALWAYS been one of their weaknesses......even with their experienced teams......

It's a long standing Iowa tradition. You don't want to give up tradition, do you?;)

RocknRollface brought up a good point that teams are taking advantage of our philosophy on high screens and making a couple quick passes to find the open shooter thus making us get out of position and chase.

We also don't seem to communicate very well at times when rotating on defense.

We're commiting two defenders to the guy with the ball on high screens but we're not making it nearly hard enough to get rid of the ball.

UM basically used what they knew we were going to do on defense to set up their offense all day.

Teams also have our zone scouted. PU and UM both got those same corner 3 looks.

Imo Iowa would be better off just to switch all screens or let the defender fight through.

People always complained about Woodbury hedging but he was actually pretty good at it.

What were getting now is what bad hedging looks like.

Either the screener slips to the basket for a layup or the corner man comes down to the paint and leaves his spot open.

To do it right you have to ride the ballhandler away from the play and get him to turn his back so you can recover.

Even if youre good at it, if an opponent has a big thats good at slipping the screen you can get eaten alive, which is what Gonzaga did to us a couple years ago. UM also did some of that today.

It's tough to teach the hard hedge like that, there's a lot of basketball instinct involved in knowing when you've disrupted the ball handler enough and need to peel off. As you mentioned Woody was very good at it, Olesani was terrible at it which was probably because he had such limited time playing the sport.

People can drive by them easily

Woody might have been a lot better at hedging, but the result was the same. Late in shot clock, opponents get open shots. We've had late season implosions 2 of last 3 seasons, and a lot of it has been teams gnashing our defense.

When you can't score late you put a lot of pressure on your defense, and iowa had multiple guys who didn't want the ball at the end of games in recent years.
