6’10 Oskaloosa, IA Center Xavier Foster is Ranked #22 for 2020 Class by One Outlet

You forgot to clarify that Van Coleman has him at #22. The main services haven't ranked him yet. But would not be surprised if he ends up a 5 star. Definitely has a huge upside.

This is what could be the nucleus of the 2020-2021 Iowa Roster:

Freshmen: 1--6'10" C Xavier Foster (*****)

Sophomores: 2--6'6" SF Patrick McCaffery (****); 6'1" PG DJ Carton (unrated)

Juniors: 2--6'5" SG Joe Wieskamp (****); 6'5" SG Connor McCaffery (****; announced on Apr 28, 2017 that he will play baseball in the Spring of 2018 and redshirt in basketball in the fall of 2017)

Seniors: 2--6'10" C Luke Garza (****); 6'9" F Jack Nunge (***)

Roys old and unc isn't as popular with this generation of kids as it was with the last couple as the Jordan connection fades.

Also Iowa is in a much better place than the last time Roy stole someone and Fran beat him the last time.

Id be more worried about Self, Izzo and then really worried if Calipari decides to stick his nose in at the last minute

Makes you wonder when his recruiting blows up; hopefully he commits to Iowa soon :)

I do think that Iowa has a lot of good things going on as far as keeping the instate kids: (1) we are now a stable program; (2) we are in the B1G, America's #1 basketball conference; (3) these kids will play close to home so family can easily come watch in person; (4) we play a fun style of ball; (5) our program is not located in Lames, IA

You must have missed the fact that Roy has won 3 championships at UNC with the most recent being just last year. Now he has struggled lately compared to Self, Cal, K and Miller in recruiting the top players but I think that is mostly due to all the 4 and 5 star kids that remained on the roster.

Yeah Foster is going to attract interest/offers from the big names in college hoops. All depends on what he wants to do. Iowa I would think is in as good a position as can be expected. Iowa was on him early and the roster shapes up to be good based on the players that will be here. If playing all his home games close enough that his family can attend is important, Iowa has a real good shot.

Whether it's Roy or one of the other huge programs, there will be a lot of competition for Foster.

I have a connection into his AAU program, albeit in the younger divisions. Last I had heard (back in winter), he had no favorites at this time and was going to take all the visits he can. Sounds like he's going to soak up the attention. Can't say I blame him. He's going to be getting the VIP treatment on his college visits.

yeah, that is what I read too, that he doesn't have a favorite. Also he said he is letting his dad lead his recruiting right now.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Won the national championship this year and in back-to-back championship games. I think most high-level recruits would listen if Roy came calling.

No matter how many "expert" opinions are offered no one knows for sure what the kid and his family are thinking. Some times it is just as simple as a kid hitting it off with certain coaches and building a good relationship. Some times a kid wants to stay close to home so his family can more easily see him play; some times a kid is itching to get far away from home. You never know.

I do think if Iowa is as competitive as we hope and anticipate they will be over the next 2-3 years it can only help Fran's chances of landing him.

Interesting that Foster's listed as a center. The last interview he did, the way I recall it, he thought of himself more as a shooter away from the basket. Wonder if that's changed/he's developed a post game. As a 5/4 frosh, he'd be in a perfect situation behind the seniors Garza/Nunge.

Can't help thinking that getting a 2019 or 2020 PG would help seal the deal for Foster.

I posted a link to a whole game of his a while back. It's on You Tube somewhere.

He is a natural shot blocker and like many bigs these days he does like to face the basket.

He wasn't a starter. But we are talking about a very young man. He is athletic, no doubt about that.

Is former Iowa footballer Mark Fetter a Grandpa too ? Or do I have him confused with someone else ?

have no clue how good Foster could end up ... seems he has a high ceiling..but for sure Iowa & Fran could continue to own the state for the top D1's.

Yup, totally missed those.

You disagreed, then contradicted yourself.

The kids remained on the roster because they're not 1 and done type talents that go to Kentucky and Duke.

UNC will always be a blue blood and theyll still get plenty 5*s but it just doesnt have the same level of national popularity it once did with kids. And Roy has no where the cache of Calipari and K with this generation of kids.

We got Woodbury, but Roy got Paige.

Will be fun to see how he does with his own high school team when the season starts and goes into the tournament when he has to face the likes of Mount Pleasant, Xavier, Wahlert, etc. Last year Osky bowed out pretty early. I realize he's a great prospect, but let's at least see him against the better 3A teams in Iowa before we crown him the next savior of Iowa basketball. And of course I hope he signs with the Hawkeyes.

Saw him in person and he's Fran's type of player - very long, lanky, and can hit the 3 although a bit unorthodox motion at this point and inconsistent. Moves fairly well - fluid and explosive but not overly so - a bit like Uthoff where he'll skinny dunk on you ie: Gonzaga. Not strong and a bit soft at this point - biggest issue is being a half second late with his reactions allowing veteran players to either out muscle him or get off shots around him a bit quicker than he reacts. Can't overpower you with his size or skill in the post yet, but you can see it coming. All that being said, it's very clear that when he gets stronger and his instincts catch up that he's going to dominate the older kids he's playing against....which is why he sticks out in his own age group.

Also heard his dad is driving the ship a bit (was added to the HS coaching staff I believe, but unsure if he'll play with Oskaloosa the full 3-4 years in HS) and may be interested in the blue bloods, so I'd put Iowa at 25% at this point based purely on rumor. But Iowa hopped on early and has good talent coming in, so they are doing what they can. We'll see. I do think he's a Top 50 talent.

Not recruiting like K and Cal doesn't mean much bc they are still elite. And Roy has never been a guy has been the top recruiter. He has usually preferred to build his teams with 4 star kids who stick around. They get the occasional one and done but that hasn't changed.

My point is UNC is no longer THE school to go to.In 90s and mid 2000s they were.

15 years ago you used to see UNC gear everywhere, videos, TV ect, especially Jordan UNC stuff, you dont see it at all anymore. Kids in the midwest aren't growing up as fans of unc.

Im sure a kid like Foster would still listen but Roy isnt going to be plucking kids from that far away anymore IMO. The appeal just isnt the same.

Self and Izzo are a much bigger threat because of proximity IMO and if Duke and UK get involved its probably over.

By 2020, you have to wonder about the looming retirement of Williams and Coach K. Don't think Foster's a UK type of guy, perhaps Kansas. But if he's a big with both outside and inside games, that sounds very Iowa- see Garza/Nunge for example, who will be seniors when he's a frosh.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens when K and Roy retire. I think both will still be relatively good bc of their recruiting ground but I don't see them maintaining the same level. Especially Duke. It seems it will be Self, Cal and Miller or Arizona ruling things. Especially with both Cal and Miller involved with USA hoops. That is where you might see an influence on Foster. He went to the USA camp this year, if he goes back next year it is more exposure and contact from Miller and Cal.
