I find it hilarious that the talking heads are still shouting that an 8 team playoff would resolve any controversy of who makes it to the National Championship game. If there are 5 Power Conferences and 4 slots to fill.....how would 8 teams solve the same problem?

An 8 team playoff would be a disaster.

Until there is a TOTAL restructure of conferences leaving four divisions(this could never happen); this will still remain a political process.

Of course many said that the BCS was going to ruin college football. Then people said that the 4 team playoff would ruin college football. I don't think any of that is true.

I am in favor of an 8 team playoff, but that will not remove the controversy of teams being left out. However, if you are teams 9-11, you may not be a threat to win it all. Just like the BB March Madness, when teams don't make it.

With 8 teams, taking the 5 Power conference champions, plus 3 at large teams would make the most sense. First round games played at the higher ranked team's field.

Not sure, but hasn't this been discussed here before?

An 8 team playoff would require the national champions to play 16 games. That's an nfl schedule. At that point u would have to remove the charade of the "student athlete" and just start paying these guys

FCS schools play 16 games and they can seem to handle it

I'm coming around on an 8 game playoff. The beauty pageant aspect of 4 creates a season long argument, generally focused on people claiming other schools suck. I think an 8 team playoff would cause a refocus on the conference races, since those are guaranteed playoff spots. The arguments fr slots 6 7 and 8 would be later in the season and secondary.

I wouldn't mind a six team playoff with the top 2 ranked teams getting a bye.

All 5 major conference champions get an automatic bid, with one at large bid.

With the at large bid, a non-power conference champion gets a shot if they seem worthy.

It would also give incentive for teams to play a better non-conference schedule.a loss doesn't hurt you as long as you win the conference. And if you lose a conference game, maybe winning a big non-conference game gives you the edge at attaining the at-large bid.

@ klemmen I agree a 6 team playoff could be best. I like the idea of keeping the CFP focused on determining the national championship. I think 4 teams is not quite enough that some argument can't still remain for a left out team. Plus the bye opportunity keeps meaning on winning every game during the season.
