nitewing takes a lot of abuse. I have two thoughts on this. One, he certainly has the right to his opinion. Two, he's is not wrong.

We've now played at least 16 true of redshirt freshmen. I'll pose a question to nitewing as he seems to have some mostly accurate information. How many rs and true freshmen have played? And further, how many have played not exclusively special teams?

the 2016 recruiting had 8 true FR play and the 2017 class as had 10 true FR Play
the ones I pointed out are the ones having played the biggest roles on offense, that shows that 10 FR/RSFR have been playing on Offense
the one new player that I Have not pointed out is Butler because of how long he has been hurt,
Butlers loss had a big impact on the offense this season as he gives Iowa that bruising back that Daniels brought last season, but he makes 11 new players on offense that have played key roles this season.
in yesterdays game Stanley showed off his ability to run by gaining 13 yards on 2 carries and with his ability of scrambling out of the pocket.

yesterdays game was the 3rd straight where the same 5 starting OL started as a unit and they played much better with out those irritating False starts that came at the wrong time.

Minnesota threw everything they had at Iowa in the biggest rivalry game of the BT season over Floyd of Rosedale, this is another aspect that posters on here ignore, this is a very important game to both Iowa and Minnesota plus Minnesota had a bigger motivation to win as they have not won in Kinnick since the 1999 season.
every winning streak comes to a end sometime.

to add to this looking at next season Iowa loses just 3 SR starters on offense
WR Easley
LG Render
C Daniels
this season Iowa loses just 3 SR starters on offense
RB Wadley
WR Vandeberg
RG Welsh

There is little doubt in my mind that if our Oline was Myers, Render, Daniels, Welsh, and Boettger, with Pekar and Wieting playing more as 'blocking' TE's this team would be running the ball down teams throats with Wadley and a healthy Butler. Those 7 were instrumental in Iowa having produce 2 1000 yd. rushers last year. Pekar and Wieting are way better blockers than Fant and Hockenson but apparently they feel they are 'tipping their hand' if the bring in Fant and/or Hockenson situationally. Either that, or they (Pekar/Wieting) are just not a hundred percent healthy, and the 'health' of certain players is something we rarely find out until after the fact. Oh, and I don't understand why BF (the 'run game coordinator' last year) isn't running any of the 'pin and pull' plays. They are great against man coverage for getting on the edge with Wadley (I believe his 2 longest TD runs last year were on this play). Pin and Pull= WR and TE block down on next man down and you pull 2 lineman out and around. With the D in man, the Corner or LB/safety chase the TE and WR 'down' exposing the edge.

Here's another look:
Rushing yards per game: 130.8 (147th)
Passing yards per game: 215.1 (185th)
Total yards per game: 345.9 (189th)

Do you suppose all those other teams have more seniors starting than we do? We do not do anything well when we have the ball, including kicking it to the other team.

I wasn't abusing him. Nitewing, I actually appreciate the time and effort you put in to share your stats and information. I just thought I recalled seeing him post this in other topics.

Fullback is overlooked with respect to importance on any Iowa offense.

I think this is having a way bigger impact than people think. Drake is an animal but doesn't seem to be in the feild as much.... did he lose a step? Ross doesn't seem to blow anyone up. He makes a decent block most of the time but a guy that can crush a lber helps the whole thing click.

Ineffective offense is not a new thing at Iowa.

I know he got 'dinged' against Mich. St. I'm amazed he even came back and played this year. Most don't know the extent of his 'break' and the surgeries that followed. He is a tough kid. Hope he is closer to full strength for the next 2 games. We'll need him.

there are only 130 teams in the FBS so where are you coming up with those stats.

this is a different post the other one dealt with next seasons starters. not many teams have this many starters, Illinois does but look closely at how they are doing, with all the new starters Iowa is ahead of the curve on offense. they also are looking even stronger for next season.
SO Kelly-Martin should be Wadley's replacement
RSSO Young should be Butlers replacement [2nd team]
SO Smith-Marsette should be Vandeberg replacement,
RSSR 6'5 305 lbs Levi Paulson should be 6'3 285 lb Welsh at RG
Levi was a 4* by Scout,

I got them from the Rivals site. I think they include the FCS.
Going with just the 130 FBS teams,
Rushing yards per game: 95th
Passing yards per game: 71st
Total yards per game: 105th

Bonus stat, Points per game: 81st (25.0, right behind Minnesota at 25.1)
Still not very good.

Those numbers are BRUTAL. Think of where we can be as a program if the defense stays consistent and the Offense even becomes average. We would be 9-3 every year.

good enough for a team that was expected to finish 6-6. if you would look back thru KF's 19 years Iowa very rarely post the type of numbers you seem to think this team should be putting up.
PSU gained 579 yards and if not for a last 2nd TD Iowa would have won vs Iowa who gained 273 total yards.

you know what. in spite of PSU total yards they still got credit for just 1 [one] WIN, NOT 1 1/2 WINS.
Norm Parker said it best
THE YARDS BETWEEN THE 20's ARE NICE TO LOOK AT [BUT THEY DON'T WIN GAMES]

1. You identified the problem when stating "projected to go 6-6."

2. You completly ignored the 85th scoring out of 130 part.

3. The fact that you don't understand teams that put up more yards and points have a better chance of winning more football games over the life of a season is amazing.

While I think most believe this offense is building into a decent in it lets make no bones about it, they are not average and by no stretch of the imagination "good." Hell, think about how much better our defensive numbers would be in the Offense could CONSISTENTLY move the ball.

you want brutal stats take a look at these
1485 yards rushing 2887 yards rushing between 2 QB's for 4372 total yards.

guess what that team went 11-2 with a BCS Orange Bowl win and a #7 final ranking., yardage doesn't = winning.

Yes unless your defense gives up more points than you score. See Big 12. Yardage is not all that.

Iowa has a sub par offense with a horrible punting game. Not an ideal recipe for success.

and it has not stopped them in the past,
2004 7-1 BT Shared Championship total yards 3752.
2009 11-2 BCS Orange Bowl win 4372 total yards
in the 2015 season Iowa had 5404 total yards for the best offensive total in the KF era and some of you just couldn't wait to run GD out of IC.

face most of you won't be happy unless they are avg'ing 650+ ypg and 60+ ppg
stats are for losers the only thing that matters are the wins. anything else is for fans to thump their chest about a meaningless set of numbers.

The game has changed dramatically since 2004. Yards and points on average are up in college football compared to 15-20 years ago. Don't look at yards or points for the Hawks, look at their relative D1 rank in said statistics.

thru out KF's tenure the Offensive rank has been in the low 80's and 90's this is nothing new.

Except for 2002-2004 and 2015 which leaves 2009 as the single exception of a good Hawkeye team with poor points/game

Just because poor recruiting and terrible offensive philosophy usually see the Hawks end up in the low 80s and 90s doesn't mean it's acceptable. With the defenses the Hawks have had, they could be Top 25 nearly every season if they had even a mediocre offense.

The one constant in Iowa’s success has been their defense.

2004 was dismantled by injuries, specifically RB injuries. David Bradley was a SR in 2004.

2009 had a decent offense in terms of KF offenses. Stanzi, McNutt, DJK, Freshman RB duo, Moeaki, Bulaga & Vendevelde, Calloway and Dace Richardson. 2009 also saw a pretty good punter in JR Ryan Donahue. Another stat that lead to a lot of success in 2009 was the turnover margin. You actually see what happens when Iowa has a decent offense, you have Orange Bowl wins.

I don’t care about stats other than W/L’s. In my opinion, Iowa would have a lot more W’s if the offense performed as well as their defense.

If BF has success it's going to be 20+ more years of the status quo. We need term limits on head coaches!!

How does the number of freshmen compare to other BIG schools?

I liked our match up until Jewells shoulder issue showed up again. I agree we play the same hard nosed football.
Yeah. I've got the feeling it's one of those things that is going to bother him the rest of the year. But he'll play as long as he can handle the pain. Luckily he probably doesn't need many reps in practice to 'prepare'. Lot's of reps for Hockaday and Welch which is a good thing.
