He flat out looks like dog poo right now.

WTH happened to him?

Talk about taking a step back.

Others are correct though, why does this seem to happen with most Hawkeye QB's going into their final season?

Running game looks ok, we never have any quality receivers of course, which is a common theme.

D has been holding up, mostly because of 2 guys, but it's been working.

All comes down to Beathard. Is he gonna turn it around or what?

He looks slower and less mobile to me. Very indecisive and not very fluid in the pocket. Guessing he is protecting an injury or two and doesn't have a lot of confidence in his OL or WRs yet which is understandable since neither have stepped up.

Only thing concerning me is him missing a handful of open receivers over throwing them when they have a step or 2 on the D. We can't afford to miss those opps when we get them as our WRs etc don't get a lot of separation most of the time. With that said, that excludes the ISU game when he was money on several passes.

Is Ruddock now better than sunshine?

No not even close in iowas system. CJ is better for our O. Rudock was solid with much more talent and a great D at Michigan. We can only afford to have a game manager as QB if we have 2002-2004 or 2009 type talent.

So when do the Stanley calls begin?

In all seriousness, he is playing with a possession WR and a decent TE and nothing from the other WR's. Smith did make one good play today.

Teams are loading 8 up and daring one of our WR's to do something.

Again, we kept hearing Scheel, Scheel Scheel....but when games come....poof

He looks like ruddock. He been broken by ferentz/Davis.
All part of Ferentz and Davis plan. Diabolical, and yet complete horseshit. I will say however that ever since the first game of the season he is not moved like he did early last year. Whether the surgery has left him less mobile, or he's been nursing another injury, but he definitely does not move like he did when he first started last year. He also does not seem to feel pressure from the backside. Maybe it was just me but today it didn't seem like he was really stepping into his throws.

Where is this this this 'POCKET' you speak of?

Nu2u I always agree with you but it's not beathard it's the offensive line he has no time to throw. And has no confidence in his line. He has overthrown some passes. But I thought he looked great running no limping.

I have a feeling if the oline improves beathard will go off, also I never realized how much we would miss smith nobody is stepping up for that 2nd receiver.

Fix the line and have another receiver that's reliable and beathard will lead us to the west title.

Also coming off an injury takes time sometimes and we saw what State Penn did to hackenburg he got killed so far this season it reminds me of that except our line isn't as bad as State Penns was but still.

Also Iowa doesn't usually start playing great until week 5 or 6.

Beathard is not dog poo he's a great QB who KF has put the cuffs on him like he did w Tate and stanzi. KF is terrible when it comes to QBs. But a great line coach so this line will get fixed and CJ will look like Tom Brady some games, with kittle as his gronk

GD needs to go back to what made things click in the first couple games. Bubble and tunnel screens. Beathard was hitting those like crazy early in the season and Iowa gained a ton of yards. I didn't even see a 4 yard out pass yesterday.

I'm not sure if that was the game plan against Rutgers or not. But that's where Davis needs to evolve during the game.

He is definitely off, how many over throws did he have yesterday? Hard to blame receivers if he doesn't throw a catchable ball? His internal clock is off and he needs to release quicker... I hope Davis hasn't f'd him up like he has the rest of QB he coached here!

1) He seems banged up
2) He's pressing
3) He doesn't trust his line and WR's

Reminds me of Drew Tate.

Interesting, is the common consensus that our o line sucks right now? I am no expert, but I thought it was considered to be adequate.

Also, when is this staff going to recruit some STUD wr's? How long has it been? We need some playmakers.

With Beathard, yeah, it was his decision making too, something is not right. You may be correct that GD and KF destroy QB's. He was the first in a long time that has shown some playmaking ability. Where is that now?

In this program, it's like a when a QB shows talent and progresses thru the system to become the starter, our coaching staff quickly works the ruin them as much as possible.

10 years eh? Did i mention I was NOT a fan of that extention? I knew last year was a bit of a mirage. We need fresh coaching blood in this program, desperately. The facilities and the potential are now in place, we just need a coaching staff that won't hamper the program down anymore.

Instead, we are stale and old, and imagine how stale and old it will get the next 7-8 years?

Uuugh, thinking about it makes me ill....

Iowa needs to plant a frikkin 6'2" 260lb meatwagon (gatekeeper) in the backfield to help with pass protection.

Still a good QB but last year he want to prove to everybody the coaches made the right choice and I think he lost a little of that.He will be fine

CJ had plenty of pocket today. He held the ball a long time repeatedly. Most of his 4 sacks were coverage sacks imo. It does look like CJ is still a bit injured.
What ever happened to throwing the ball away? This O-Line is horrendous. I honestly think IOWA has the right linemen with the wrong coach.

One big factor is that last year Beathard had far more experienced receiving options last year. Last year we had Krieger-Coble, Kittle, Hillyer, Tevaun, Jerminic, VandeBerg, Canzeri, and Mitchell.

At least in the short term, the number of viable receiving options is far more limited. Consequently, Beathard is holding onto the ball longer - and that is getting him into trouble. On top of that, his knee is clearly not yet 100% ... so that is impacting his mobility. Ordinarily, he'd be able to escape some of the pressure that has come at him.

Lastly, I remember an announcer saying that one of the bigger knocks on CJ is that he doesn't seem to feel pressure very well - and that obviously can get him in trouble.

It happened to Drew Tate in his senior year....
I specifically remember against Ohio State when Tate really lost his cool with the o-line.
Beathard does have a problem reacting to someone coming from the back side. But, I also wonder if some (not all) of the passes that look 'bad' are actually the result of the receiver not being in the right position.

I think blaming him is a gigantic oversimplification

Correct. O Line has been leaky has heck, and not great run blocking either.
RBs have missed their assignments on defensive blitzes as well.

In the NDSt game, there were several dropped passes, that literally hit guys right on the numbers. That's not the QBs fault.

We had a big penalty on the frigging sideline for bumping the side judges that killed great field position to start a drive.

Blaming the QB may be chic, but there are tons of other issues this team needs to clean up to be more competitive. Put the 'run defense' near the top of that list, too.

true throwing ball away is better than a sack, but it puts you behind the 8ball on down and distance and teams bring even more Heat. You can't score if your offense is throwing the ball away.

OL is not good in pass protection and Iowa has no receivers that are beating coverage and making teams pay for bringing all the heat. Beathard himself is off a little after taking a bunch of hits this season.

He seems afraid to take shots down the field. Whether that is from KF or GD or his own accord, it is hurting our offense. This offense isnt very good when we are going against 8 people in the box. He needs to at least throw it down the field now and then. He looks lost back there. Nervous and uptight.....

You can only 'take shots down the field', when you have that 4-5 seconds to wait for those long plays to develop. If your line isn't blocking, and your RBs can't pick up any blitzers, those plays simply do not work, and your playbook is reduced to running plays and 'quick passes'. If you cannot get first downs with that reduced playbook, you end up punting a lot...

We have tons of issues. Beathard is not himself. Maybe he's hurt. He's always changing the play this year (not usually checking into something positive). Stop over thinking everything and just run the play. O-line has been terrible the last 2 games. Getting pushed around. Defense is flat out getting pushed down the field. Faith E is not getting it done. Neither is Niemann, Bower or Snyder(big hitter and that is it). We've got major problems right now and we won't win 7 games this year if things don't change. JMO

Nervous and uptight is what happens when you believe the hype and high expectations. Pressure can take the fun out of a game for these 18-22 year olds. Pressure is a mother f(/&@?(r.
