Andrew Fleming transferring

Sounds like a good way to make money, if you can get people to work for free, why the hell not? Allows you to put those resources to use somewhere else.

It's obvious you've never managed people, but how loyal are they when you say when you sh1t on them, which is what you're proposing here.

I'm sure life is more challenging for you than it has to be since you appear comfortable saying "f you" to quality people as soon as you have one inch of leverage (which Iowa doesn't have in this case).

You're not out in the real world, yet, are you? If you did as you suggest there's a possibility of short term success, but virtually a guarantee of long term failure.

You can certainly tell the "Iowa nice" crowd in here, you get a good break, and find a rotation caliber walk on, that's the time to try to use it to your advantage, not use the first available scholarship on someone already on your team. I'd much rather take a shot on finding a high caliber guard who could be a real difference maker and elevate the program, but I guess lil Nicky's feelings should really come first.

Is he going to leave if he doesn't get one? I don't think either of us know this or know his financial situation. If his family is well off I'm certainly not going to be in a rush to use a newly free scholarship on somebody already on the team.

Even if he would stay without a scholarship, i would give him a scholarship. He's earned it.

My concern is Hutton and Fleming were to be the next level of recruit to help elevate Iowa basketball and both are gone after 1 season? How is Fran missing the boat on these kids? There is a serious disconnect and I find it very concerning both Fleming and Hutton are already leaving.
Hutton was never the "next level" of recruit for you. I saw him a number of times in high school and, if you didn't know who he was, you wouldn't have even noticed him. I caught some grief on here for saying that at the time. He might have turned out to be a rotation player because of his defense, but he was never that next level recruit. Even his defense was overstated in high school, IMO.

My interpretation of this situation is as follows : It seemed obvious that Flemming has a very high opinion of his skill level as a player. He says as much in his departure paragraph. He appeared to not have a realistic handle on his true basketball skills. He didn't even start on his senior team much of the time and few high majors were interested in him.
I felt like he was a ball hog when he was in the games this year and in over his head. He played no defense at all.
He was a volume shooter but not a high percentage shooter. He was not the next coming of Chris Kingsbury.
Without defense , he wasn't even as good as Oglesby. Just my opinion.
The only thing wrong with the team and the transfers is Fran and his staff over projected their skill levels. Fran talks with each player and tells them what they can expect in the future should they chose to stay. For example, his first year , he told the starting point guard that he wouldn't play more than 6 to 8 minutes a game the next season and Cully chose to transfer which was the best for all concerned.
Most players know where they stand but when the coach tells them for a fact it is easier for them to transfer and move on.

I kinda agreed with you but the bolder part just shows you're trolling. Baer is an adult and seems like the type that will do whatever is best for the team. It's for Fran to decide what that is.

You're trying too hard. Trolling is an art, not a race.

If you have an open scholarship next year, then by all means give it to Baer. But I don't just turn around and give one to him now, I'm going to see what else I can pull in first. If I can get a big time transfer or two, then sign me up and I'll worry about Baer down the line.

So is there a problem going on with the team or something? Wasn't this guy a pretty good get?
Just a matter of PT it seems. There was a glut of freshmen all for the same two positions, it was not surprising that some bounced.

People were pretty excited about Fleming considering he was invited to play at Oak Hill and then he lit up the PTL which raised expectations higher. Some could make the argument that he should have played over Ellingson. But at least Brady makes an attempt to play D. Fleming, in his limited time, seemed to have no clue how to play defense or was too slow to compensate.

I wish he had stuck around and maybe became Gatens lite, but at this point, we have the chance to find better athleticism on the transfer market or desperately address or PG situation.

Baer has earned it, which is more than could be said for Hutton and Fleming, who are now leaving. Baer gets one, and Fran gets one...until the next domino falls...then Fran gets two.

Fair is fair.

Baer gets his. And Fran will get two.... I'd be surprised if not. Sad actually.

So right now, the depth chart is something like this

1: Williams, Bohannon
2: Moss, Ellingson
3: Jok, Baer
4: Uhl, Jones, Pemsl
5: Wagner, Cook, Kriener

Some combination of that. Pretty green.
Mmmm....and just think if Jok goes pro.

I smell a national championship....and I can't even smell.

The guy wants to play. He no doubt believes that ain't going to happen to his satisfaction if he stays.

I'm confused why Flemming and Hutton are leaving. They had a great chance for PT this next year. What's going on? I think something is up.

This is a big fail for us. The kid was dialed into one of the HS programs in the country.

It also hurts our already razor thin guard court. We have two natural guards and a swing in Peter. One, Brady, showed himself largely unprepared for B!G ball. The other, Christian, didn't play enough to get a real handle on his ability.

How will this look if Moss can't get or stay eligible?

They were both offered fairly early and never really developed. Iowa has to try and project and can't sit back and wait like some programs, which can cause a few more misses. Add in the development of Baer that pushed Hutton even farther down the rotation if he was indeed a 3. You say they have a great chance for PT but they are playing against Jok, Moss, Williams, and Bear every day in practice and I'm sure they knew where they stood in comparison to those guys. Doesn't sound like they were too confident that the PT would be there.

Thought he had alot of potential. Was player of the year in Tenn in AA his junior year and also state championship game MVP. Then is good enough to get into Oak Creek...
But WTF happened?? Cant beat out Ellingson?? Give me a break....

If we can keep Baer here without one, don't see why we need to waste one on him when we could potentially get a much better player with it.

Totally disagree with this now that there's 2 open scholly's. If only 1 and they used it on a PG or outstanding player of another position I'd agree. But now that you can bring in a transfer or 2016 kid if they don't give one to Baer it's a dick move and they don't deserve to keep him. Sure, he came in not expecting a scholarship but now that he's proven he's much more valuable than multiple guys that ARE on scholarship it would be unclassy and unwise to give him the run around at this point.

Point guard, point guard, point guard.
If we all say it 3 times, and click the heels of our red shoes together, maybe that much needed grad transfer will magically appear in Iowa City.

No, but you've been filling in for awhile on a volunteer basis. Now that the company has the resources to make it a paid position, they gave it to someone else even though you've been doing all of the work. They figured screw it, you've been doing it for free anyways, might as well milk this poor sap for everything he's worth, amirite?

THIS THIS THIS. SO MUCH THIS

Are you being dense on purpose?
Jesus you need a lesson on previous walk ons.
please enlighten me. Iowa needs some guards so they need to go out and get a couple for next year. Can't do that and give Baer a scholarship. Am I wrong? If you can't get two guards this offseason then by all means give it to Baer. If you don't think Iowa needs some experienced guards then you didn't pay good enough attention this past year.

He played at Ensworth and was Tennessee player of the year in Division II, Class AA.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see that class. There are only 15 schools in the class and three of the 15 (St. Agnes, Girls Prep, and Hutchison) are girls' schools. Big fish, little pond.
