Andy Hamilton reporting on twitter that Andrew Long violated the terms of his pact with Grand View and they have dismissed him from the team.

Grand View coach made sure to tell Hamilton that whatever ti was that violated his contract, it was something very minor, something that a normal situation athlete would likely not even be reprimanded for, but given the fact that Long's situation is decidedly NOT normal, this is the result. So lets not assume he committed a new crime or anything.

According to the coach, if he had had no previous problems, he wouldn't have even gotten a reprimand for the most recent occurrence.

Are you serious about that?

Yes. It was very strange. He wasn't drinking, but was wondering around sitting at random tables talking to people, talking to himself, singing to himself and railing ciggarettes. It was like he was bi-polar or schizophrenic or something.

Okay. I may believe it now but it's not easy.

I had heard he had broken the contract earlier in the year but nothing was done.

Also, he could win NAIA not only after drinking and smoking this weekend but also at the tournament, between rounds and matches.

Hmmmm. Not sure I believe that.

Why would I lie about that? I immediately contacted a friend of mine who is good friends with GV wrestlers so that they could get someone down there to get him. I was worried that he was a danger to others or himself.

Not saying you are a liar. I'm just saying it's hard for me to believe. The young man has had so many chances and was built up to have really changed his life around. It was such a great feel good story. I guess I just didn't want to believe it.

It is too bad. What a phenomenal wrestling talent. He is a blast to watch.

It is clear that with indiscretions such as he had, that we might want more than 6 months good behavior before we consider him redeemed.

I agree. It is unbelievable and incredibly sad.

Better write a blog post about this.

Has Long denied these claims yet?

I have no idea the terms but it could be likely Long has a PO and typically folks are not allowed to even be in bars if while on probation. If you count Buzzard Billy's as a bar since they serve food. Not sure how that works.

If true, he needs support not scorn. Mental illness is a terrible affliction that happens to far too many people. It would also explain
his very erratic college career.

They just released the reasoning. He consumed alcohol. It's just too bad he keeps making these choices. I've know him since he was a pup.

Sounds like he was drunk. Guess I should have clarified that I didn't see him drink anything, but he could have been drunk, or in this case black-out.

But dice was so sure he was a class A kid nowadays and turned everything around. What say you dice?

I'm sure you have me mixed up with a famous BWI poster - I've never posted anything about Andrew Long on any board - but it's kind of sad that news like this would be met with glee from any adult.

I feel sorry for the guy and the road to recovery is not always a smooth one. Hope he get's back on the path.

A friend of Bill's here and there is a reason for take it "one day at a time" there is no cure just have to not take a drink. I hope for his cause he finds his way back or maybe the next time could be his death.

Damn shame...hope he sees some light before he bottoms out. Lots of people went to bat for him to make this happen to include allowing a registered sex offender on the campus which is stigma enough. I've seen it before so many times...good luck, cause he's gonna need it. He should be living at AA meetings right now.

Had an uncle die from addiction. Battled it on and off his whole life. Went to Vietnam and never could exorcise those demons. My guess is just like my uncle and Vietnam, no amount of drinking will make him forget his time at ISU.
Don,

You say that about ISU but at least KJ took a stand and would not let him wrestle without first earning it through actions. Another coach just wanted a national title at any cost.

This is true. Probably trying to forget the trauma of being used liked a pawn.

What a shame. Was hoping he had it whipped. I hope he can find the help he needs as this problem goes further than wrestling. Certain people can't be around it, can't drink any and need a strong support group. He is obviously one of those.

I think this guys got a lot more problems than alcohol, but the rest of them are probably manageable if you keep alcohol out of it.good luck hope he finds whatever it is that makes him happy.

A family member of his told me that he did not drink actually what cradleking said is what the young man had told me

Wow, how do you mess that up.....again.
Ironic, I just watched redemption piece about him on the news.
Wonder what he did...

This was my first thought. Missed the segment, but they plugged it on local TV in the Des Moines area just a couple of nights ago. Very weird and unfortunate timing. Sorry to hear this.

If the concern was being a danger to himself or others, why wouldn't the call have been made to LE instead?

I honestly agree with him being used as a pawn by Cael....if he wouldnt have waived the waiting time rules fro the team and allowed him to compete without any proof of a lifestyle change maybe things would have panned out for him. Instead he wrestled...placed Helped Cael win a title and then went downhill and out the door from there....and where are Cael and those titles now?...far far away....its too bad for this young man....such talent

Tell that to all of those who have had the courage to quit drinking or doing drugs.

As someone who has overcome drug addiction and debilitating symptoms of mental illness I can confidently state that it requires a massive amount of will power to conquer the negative aspects which were dominating my life. I am certain that a fair number of people on this earth are incapable of applying the effort required to best addiction or similar plights. It is completely fair to say that if someone demonstrates a behavior repeatedly that they will continue to do so in the future (especially when dealing with a habit this powerful), it's most certainly not cynicism. Not all people are ready to change or put the work in needed to enact that change and until they are, nothing, no matter how hard others try to help, will happen. If they are/do its a pleasant surprise and a victory. If they don't then it's not a disappointment, it simply is what it is (while also not being what it's not if I'm utilizing completely asinine turns of phrase). I'm was a huge fan of Andrew Long's recovery story, but I have to admit, being a realist, that the overwhelmingly likely scenario is that he never gets his problems under control.

ISU didn't trigger anything, its just brought it publicly to the surface. Not sure the chaos of Ames compares to Vietnam. A have an uncle who will never be alright from his time serving in Vietnam but being in a bunker praying for your life is a far cry from being on Welch Ave. Long was drinking heavily and smoking pot at Creston. Drinking was in the family. My understanding is Long is just one of those guys and we all have friends like it that seems to get drunker faster and a switch just changes in them. Pretty common trait in native Americans.

I had heard KJ was trying to get both He and his dad into rehab/meetings but then Cael called. I do think his big regret will be he wasn't a Cyclone the whole time and a national champ at that. He had the talent. But I don't think Ames is fueling anything all that much. We don't see Slaton having PTSD issues because Iowa City didn't end up the way he envisioned it.
