Andrew Long.. He gone

ISU didn't trigger anything, its just brought it publicly to the surface. Not sure the chaos of Ames compares to Vietnam. A have an uncle who will never be alright from his time serving in Vietnam but being in a bunker praying for your life is a far cry from being on Welch Ave. Long was drinking heavily and smoking pot at Creston. Drinking was in the family. My understanding is Long is just one of those guys and we all have friends like it that seems to get drunker faster and a switch just changes in them. Pretty common trait in native Americans.

I had heard KJ was trying to get both He and his dad into rehab/meetings but then Cael called. I do think his big regret will be he wasn't a Cyclone the whole time and a national champ at that. He had the talent. But I don't think Ames is fueling anything all that much. We don't see Slaton having PTSD issues because Iowa City didn't end up the way he envisioned it.
I was not joking about my uncle or Vietnam but I was joking about ISU.

And what's funnier than a young man throwing his life away? Stay classy, Don Hawkeye.
I think a few people missed the joke - it was about ISU not Long. If you are concerned about Long - go to big 10s and taunt Carl for how he handled Long. It's one thing to have the kid transfer but the way he handled after speaking to ISU coaches is as scummy as you can get. Regardless of the success of PSU or "failures" of Iowa you can't even compare the values / ethics of the coaches.

This isn't Don Hawkeye's fault. Blame Long for repeatedly screwing up, or blame those who overlooked his destructive behaviour for all these years because he does well on the wrestling mat.

I don't think anyone's happy about this, but plenty of warnings had been given out and ignored/glossed over by the naive.

Maybe I'm just an asshole, but I don't give a crap about Andrew Long and will be very happy when he is no longer discussed on these forums.

We have so many college athletes who keep their noses clean and work hard and get no mention... then we have AL who has gotten multiple chances and has pretty much screwed up every one.

Rant over!

No "maybe" about it.

I have no problem with your take. It's ironic how many hawkeye fans feel for the kid but if you ever met Andrew he hates everything Iowa to the core. Don't bend too far over backwards to make yourself feel better for a kid that hates this fan base with a passion!

No wonder Amalone like him so much!

Agreed. ISU gave him a chance for success in life if he would have taken it. PSU and their coaches only allowed the behavior to continue for their own benefit. Cael knew better but could not resist. He was a very big enabler.

I could care less about how he feels about Iowa. I just hope he gets the help he needs.

I was making fun of ISU, period. At the same time acknowledging that addiction can be hard. I did have an uncle that went to Vietnam and had a ton of bad stuff happen to him before that. He died because of his addictions. I guess it is too soon to even slightly joke about Vietnam with you fake outrage folk.

I have been around Andrew dozens of times and he has never said 1 negative word about Iowa wrestling. He knows that I am an Iowa wrestling supporter and that I also support the HWC. We have discussed his time at ISU, PSU and what a great opportunity he has/had at Grand View with Coach Mitchell. I will continue to back him and support him any way that I can. All the classless jabs at a young man that is obviously battling addiction/dependency is ridiculous to me.

I'm sure all the kids he punched in Ames and the woman in State College think he is a real great dude!

Have you ever been in a fight Saint Ihawk? 99% of the time it takes 2 people. I can only imagine the tough guys in a bar running their mouths to a little 5"6 135 pound kid only to have their ass handed to them. I'm not trying to say that Andrew is an angel but coming from a guy that has been in numerous fights, you don't always have to go looking for one to be in one. Andrew knows full well that the incident in State College was his fault and his alone. He paid his price to society. I hope him the best and don't really give 2 f_ _ _ s if you do or not.

How is it possible you failed to realize the sarcasm?

As for Long, I recall threads were some preferred to take the "wait and see" approach and were chastised for not embracing his "turnaround". No mention of that now.

If anyone in the history of the Interwebz has ever better summed up their entire persona in a single message board post I have yet to see it. I'm actually impressed.

I'm about to bust out in a rendition of "Amazing Grace ". What a bunch of saints. I don't agree with what Andrew has done in his personal life, in any way, shape or form! But man, what a talent! I wish him the best!

Spooner, I don't know you but I would love to introduce myself to you. Do me a favor, the next couple times you are in the room wear a nametag and I will come over and say hi. Then you can make an informed judgement of me in person.

I admire your allegiance to someone you know personally.

But to the hundreds?? of Iowa wrestling fans that do not know him personally and are looking at this situation from a more objective POV, I don't think the level of sympathy is very high.

I think most here can agree that the real enabler in his history is the HC at PSU. At least from the standpoint of those that knew him from a college athlete being given multiple chances to turn his life into something positive.

As everyone here who knows my POV, I've never thought very highly of Kevin Jackson, but from what I have read over the years, Jackson took the correct stance on his situation and stood by his principles. If my recollection of the story is accurate... Jackson made every attempt to help AL with the resources that were available.

I love how Cael is taking the fall AGAIN for Andrew Long. Fact is recent events prove that no matter what Cael could of done to keep Andrew on the straight and narrow, it wouldn't of worked. He was away from wrestling for for 3 years, spent a year in jail and received tons of counseling. If that couldn't get him on the straight and narrow then what would have?

Meanwhile in the glass houses department, EDIT: well lets just leave it at that.

One thing Cael could have done is not bring Andrew to PSU. The more I think about it the more this makes me think poorly of Cael. I normally like Cael, and thing he is the best coach in college wrestling right now. However, bringing Long to Penn State was done purely out of self interest and it seems clear the Cael did not consider the best interests of the student athlete. Moving Long across the country and throwing him into an environment where he knew very few people and had little support was not good for him. Cael is not to blame for Long's issues, but it seems clear that Cael did not do much to help the kid either and mostly wanted Long to come help him win championships.

Crablegs: You're not likely to get a response because you have repeated the most common reasoning for AL's post ISU problems. KJ gave an ultimatum, while CS looked away.

Cael isn't taking the fall for anything Andrew did. Cael is taking the fall for what he didn't do. Put a kids interest ahead of his own. Andrew was never on the straight and narrow from ames to happy valley but that took a back seat to Caels desire to win that first title and had a 133 open spot. Cael got what he needed out of the kid and hid behind a false front that a change of scenario and a familiar coach was the rehab he needed the whole time. This is about a coach enabling the kid by not taking wrestling away from him when they had the chance to leverage it for rehab. And at that undermining the coach (KJ) who was trying to enforce an ultimatum.

Do you really think if Cael had a decent 133 that year he even would have messed around with that baggage?

You cant seriously be that naive.

There was no requirement for Cael to take Andrew Long. He didn't have to do anything.

What a load of crap. If Cael wanted to help Long he would not have provided the getaway car for Andrew Long to escape his predicament in Ames, Iowa and to dodge Kevin Jackson's intervention.

Might as well give up guys no way are the Penn State posters gonna agree or realize that all Cal did was enable Long to pro long his illness. Yes there is no way to know if Long would have stayed and got treatment in Ames if it would have worked there is no cure. We do know for a fact though that Long would not of had the lady and jail time he got in Happy Valley.

Crickets... Not surprised as the few that show up here to defend some despicable actions have ran out of ammo.
