Angelo

It’s a lot harder to score in neutral when your opponent is on a knee whenever they aren’t in tie ups. I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I think dropping to a knee greatly lessens scoring, lends itself to boring matches, and should be (with a rule change) a stall warning.
I'm not a fan of dropping to a knee either and agree with it lending itself to boring matches, and that's because usually when it happens I feel like the guy is doing it to stall. I didn't feel that way one time when watching Drago's match. He used it to be offensive.

I have to wonder what the conversations are like between him and AJ. Kind of crazy to think about how different they seem to be. Loved how Angelo's first comment in his interview was giving props to his teammates, specifically Gabe. They seem like a tight knit group and that's an underrated ingredient for great teams.

Yeah. I never said he didn't. I said that when he wrestles the best competition he brings essentially zero offense for most of the match, takes no risks, plays defense, and then gets a last-minute takedown on the edge for the win.

I called him an elite tactician. Which he is. I also called him boring and uninspiring as a top-ranked guy, because he is.

Sorry if that chaffes you down there, but I get the feeling you're one of these PSU fans who thinks college wrestling was invented in 2012. Lol.
Considering I'm from rural PA where wrestling was huge and have several good friends who wrestled, you'd be wrong.

Just say you hate Starocci, it's okay. You'd think Iowa has a stable of high flyers based on how you post. Maybe you hate Starocci because he single handedly has more championships than Iowa's entire program during his time in college. His style resembles most of Iowa's wrestlers, he's just good at it. That undoubtedly chaffes you down there.

It's amazing how upset some of you get about new money in wrestling. Yes, I know there's a history. Yes, I know it's full of Hawkeye legends. It's weird, but probably a coping mechanism.

Lol.

I don't hate Starocci. I've called him elite multiple times on here, because he is an elite talent. I just find him boring as hell to watch when he gets in v. another top guy.

Hate is a strong word, but I have no problem saying I don't care for the guy at all. Talented wrestler but outside of that I think he's kind of a puke.

its amazing how many PSU posters get upset about what is posted on an Iowa board. IF you want to jerk PSU off stay on your own board - it really isn't that hard (no pun intended).

My favorite is them having a Bo Bassett dedicated thread since he was in 7th grade, only for him to go to Iowa. That will always be funny to me.

Being difficult to score on does not justify a stall warning. Not scoring from the neutral position would justify a stall warning, but Angelo has at least 2 takedowns against every opponent not named Starocci.

Mostly, I don't see Angelo on a knee for extended lengths of time. At his best he is constantly changing elevation, and taking a shot during a change in elevation. Watch the Plott match. There was only one brief moment in the second period when Plott forced the issue and drove Angelo to the edge. Other than that one moment, Angelo was the aggressor, scored 2 takedowns, and won the match.

Starocci got Ferrari to wrestle on his feet by leveraging his strength, driving Angelo to the edge, and earning a stall point. By halfway through the first period Angelo was on his feet mostly in the neutral position.

I could say Starroci leveraging his strength and at times driving wrestlers off the mat like a sumo wrestler, with no shot attempt, is boring. You can say trying to wrestle in space, change elevation, and leverage quickness is boring.

What I really think is everyone wrestling the same way is boring. Different techniques that let opponents leverage strength, quickness, size, length, technique advantages is interesting.

I also think making a stance and technique, (that has been around forever) illegal just because of Angelo Ferrari is stupid.

Off the thread topic but while Nitwits are here discussing the style & technique of an Iowa wrestler on an Iowa board, I’m curious how you feel when someone wrestles with an arm held behind their back. Perhaps you have friends who have wrestled who hold an opinion.

It would seem this is an obvious attempt to not engage with your opponent and in turn “greatly lessens scoring, lends itself to boring matches, and should be (with a rule change) a stall warning.”

Thoughts??
I wouldn't bother. With a handful of exceptions, their posters, like much of the larger fanbase, are a sad group of small, petty individuals, as limited in reason as they are actual knowledge of the sport of wrestling, escaping a sad existence by living vicariously through the success of a team that happened to fall into their geographical lap. If you anticipate anything more than non-sequitur howling and flinging of feces, I'm afraid you will be disappointed.

Not one of my better moments😏. I’ve edited my post. It was intended to be rhetorical.
I could not care less what the Nitwits think.

I agree and I also happen to be from rural Pennsylvania and I think Stars attitude is a joke. He was one of those who loudly praised the almighty and acting like the ultimate Christian.... while then taking a step off the mat and pissing on someone's grave and all of the other stupid sheet that he said. In all honesty if you think about the really good wrestlers you think of Smith's low single leg shot or perhaps Wade Schalles cradling all of his opponents. or maybe Spencers tilt series or a multitude of other wrestlers and their best moves...and then with Starr i get an image of stalling. Score first and slow down the match...i would rather watch paint dry than watch any of his snoozefests. oh yeah I wrestled and I knew some guys that wrestled ..... just saying.

Sounds like someone who scouted and actually coached someone within the rules. My wrestling friends say it would be akin to something as simple as knowing the best choice of position for your own wrestler. Apparently, pretty basic stuff.

Wrestling wise, he's probably a guy you love on your team and hate on anyone else's. I admire his toughness, confidence and defense. MMA should be interesting with him one way or the other. Off the mat, he's definitely edgy and has some head scratcher. There were concerns that he'd be able to even make it at PSU when leaving Prep.

Which region are you from? I'm NW, specifically D10.

Wrestling on one knee is within the rules. If your offense is shut down because a guy puts one knee down you may want to diversify your attacks.

I don't have an issue with the one knee and didn't discuss it ITT. From what I saw against Plott, he would start there and then come up for ties. He's sneaky, in a good way.

People whining about AF wrestling from a knee are just coping with the fact that he's at Iowa and they know he's going to be a very serious problem for everyone the next four years. If they had him they'd call it smart wrestling.

Nice. We didn't play you all in any sports...too far.

My buddy's son is a SR and making his last attempt at states with Regionals this weekend in Sharon. Me and my son will be going over to support him and undoubtedly see some great wrestling. The 107 from Grove City is probably the headliner.

Ironically, my buddy's kid has wrestled Bo five or six times over the past two years.

That way he’s not exposing his legs much before he sees an opening for a tie he wants or a leg attack from space. Drake will do this also.

thats awesome...right now with Bishop McCort dominating our District we have many bright lights in the sky and they should dominate Regionals as well.

My buddy's son's team faced them in the State Duals. I think they won two matches. My buddy's son didn't wrestle the McCort dual. Guess they felt feeding Bo a different sacrificial lamb was the way to go.

Ironically, the first time I saw Carter was during the Parade of Champions when my buddy's son qualified for PA Juniors. I think Carter was in 8th at the time. He had an afro and was wearing like 30 medals. He had a good HS career but wasn't a high flyer like aome others and I was kind of surprised when PSU was after him. Whoops.

You just here to troll?
Must have a pretty sad life.
