Was in South Lake Tahoe this weekend and hit a few of the casinos and wow, they were never great but now they're just sad. Each had maybe a dozen tables and the rest were just giant video games.

Wife and I used to hit Vegas a couple times a year when we lived in LA. Always enjoyed the old school vibes of some of the traditional casinos like Bally's. Lots of table games with all sorts of stakes. If they all look like the Tahoe casinos now I don't see spending any more time in them.

Been there twice in the last few months. Won at the Planet Hollywood craps table. All good.

With the Mirage closing they’re forced to pay out all of their progressive jackpots. It’s basically vacuumed the business from a lot of Vegas this month.

I go every 6 months now for conferences and it got trashy (even by Vegas standards) during Covid and never made it out of its funk imo. I wouldn't go if I was paying for it. The emphasis is no longer on gambling and taking care of the gambler so he feels alright about getting his ass kicked at a card game and more about extracting every dollar possible at every turn.

I read something in the LV paper about that. Basically a shit show with lines out the door just to get a slot machine. They only do progressive table game give ways on certain days so the tables are wide open on "off days".

We finally got a break today from 100+ degree days. After 106-113 for 2-3 week 96 is going to feel glorious today.
It's 10:30 and it hasn't hit 90 yet!!
The day we moved him in it felt like death. I never experienced wind making the heat worse but all it did was turn what felt like an oven into a convection oven. It was still 105 degrees at 11pm.

No thanks.

I was there in May, one of my favorite places in the world. Table games are getting more expensive, I had a hard time finding anything for less than $15. Poker is always available, and you can almost find a game at your price point. Food is awesome and expensive and worth it if you don't plan to go to Vegas and save money. The shows are hit or miss, I absolutely love Absinthe. Lazy River at MGM Grand is pretty awesome - drink and float.

Mrs Knives and I went for the first time in March with two other couples. She won on slots almost enough to pay for our entire trip. We stayed at the MGM Grand. I really don’t feel the need to go back. CSB.

That's good to hear. There were a few $25 tables in Tahoe but the rest were $50. But overall not many tables at all. Perhaps the high limits were due to the golf tournament in town.

All of the tables have higher limits today. Even $25 Craps tables are in short supply.

When we were young and poor we'd drive out once or twice a year. I'd take out $100 and play blackjack. Wife would make a $10/4 team parlay and watch the games all day in the sports book. She hit once and people thought she won a million dollars from all the screaming she did.
I would usually win enough to pay for our room for the weekend. Wife would come by my table every few hours and take chips from my stack.

I saw a lot of video roulette. No way I'd play that. Shit, wife played some video blackjack sitting at the bar and that was the most crooked game I've ever seen. Dealer hit 6 blackjacks in 20- minutes and she started with a 12 nearly every hand.

I'm going in November on a golf trip. 2 nights in Mesquite and 2 nights at Mandalay Bay. I probably won't spend $1 on gambling as I'm too cheap and impatient. I've only been one other time and that was 16 years ago.

So if I'm there alone or with the wife, I pretty much stick to the video poker machines at the bar. More often than not those can keep me busy for a couple hours and I can usually break even or come out a bit ahead when you factor in the premium drinks that are comped.

If I'm there with people who like to play or want to learn I stick with craps.

November sounds good. At least you won't faceplant from the heat by the 3rd hole.

It's been a bit over a year since I was last in Vegas, but had similar thoughts. I don't much care for slot machines, I mostly play craps & blackjack. We stayed at Mirage but walked around a good bit to other nearby places. Most of the craps & blackjack tables were $20 minimum, even at off times & off days. In the evenings, they were that much or more - and most were very slow, and some of the smaller casinos had done away with live craps tables - only had the crappy machine version.

I don't play craps. I honestly cannot figure it out to save my life, and I'm a smart man. Every time it's explained to me there's just some mental block and I become Simple Jack.

Them "Okay, so that's your 'come out roll'."
Me "Cool, what does that mean?"
Them "The come out roll."
Me "I understand the words, not the sentence."
Them "It's the number you need to..." and the rest is just bells and whistles.

That all said, my friend, who loves the game, says the best tables he's played are at Aria and Circa.

It's always interested me; I learned how to play one afternoon at what used to be the Barbary Coast. Was there with my wife & a few of her friends, all relatively attractive females. It was our last day there & we had the afternoon to kill waiting for our flight, so we went in & they had one dollar tables. We all played for hours, with the dealers walking us through bets, how to play ODDS, and which bets were favorable vs sucker bets. I won a little bit of money & drank a massive amount of free bourbon, and learned how to properly play the game. There's no place in a casino that's more fun than a "hot" table, because most everyone is betting on the same thing - when a winner is roled, everybody wins, so it bets pretty rowdy.

Vegas is one giant weed cloud these days nttawwt. Still a sucker for sports books /csb
