I know the guy wasn't a favorite with a lot of fans and received a lot of guff at times, but it seems we are missing his post presence. Thoughts?

Yeah because our current post players are still trying to figure out where THEY need to be, let alone knowing and communicating where everybody else is supposed to be. We aren't missing his offense though. Pemsl, despite his turnovers, is a solid screener and great passer... plus he can score, which is nice.

Hard for me to credit Woody with the dance. Not saying he was not a component.

HE HAD SPECIAL THINGS.TEAM LEADER NO? FUTURE FUN AND BRIGHT.EXAMPLE JBO CAN SHOOT FINAL SHOT WITH ICE.SOON OTHER KIDS WILL DO THAT ALSO.EITHER YOU CAN OR CAN'T NO?

Yeah I called that late last year ........actually they are doing better with out him than I thought they would. To the one dimensional comment ...really....the only thing he didn't do well is being a scorer! He was a bully on defense ....this team could so use that!

A team leader bully.aLEADER NO?

He provided size, rebounding, solid screens, and good passing. Overall, tough and physical play. I love our youngsters, but they could take note and learn from Woody's checking out(banging) and effort in rebounding.

Not to minimize the other things he did, but the biggest thing they miss about him is his defensive communication. He was the traffic cop. As was stated above, most on the current team are still trying to find their own way on defense, let alone the team concepts. Having Woody back there would be huge, since he knew where everyone should be and what their responsibilities were.

It would have been nice to have Woody working with these freshmen. Show them how to play some D by example.

I am optimistic that Pemsl will turn into a very solid if not quite good defender. He's already improved greatly. He just has a great feel for the game, has nimble feet and plenty of strength/girth. I'm concerned that Cook may take longer to figure out that he has to play without intensity on both ends of the court. However, he certainly has the tools to be a good defender.

I'm not missing any of last years seniors, although I did respect how Gesell and Woodbury conducted themselves in post game interviews. Both were cursed by what turned out to be unrealistically high expectations.

Absolutely his defensive presence/effectiveness at protecting the rim.

I enjoy watching pemsl in the post. Compared to Woody he has masters in post moves while woody was still stuck in jr. high.
Post Offense: Woody 2 Pemsl 8
Post Defense: Woody 8 Pemsl 4
IMO advantage pemsl

a 7 footer with a 6 foot 2 wing span?.... IDK... its time to move on...
I would like to see Uhl starting in place of Cook...

Uhl is a heck of a presence down low... when he's on his game, he's as good a defender as there is on the team.

Wait, what? Woody was a good post defender, but he was ABSOLUTELY NOT a rim protector. Gessell averaged .2 blocks per game last year. Woodbury averaged .3 per game. There's a difference between being a rim protector and being a good defensive player in the post. When Woody was on the bench, teams would attack the rim. When Woody was in the game, teams would still attack the rim.

In my casual observation it appears to me that teams are getting to and finishing at the rim with much more ease than last year. I didn't say he was a great shot blocker. But I do think he helped to prevent such easy lay ups/finishes at the rim.

I'm seeing that as well... I think we all are... but to me, it seems like Bohannon is having a heck of a time trying to slow down penetration... when he learns to move his feet quicker, much like what Gesell was good at, then the overall Defense will be greatly improved.

or am I wrong in my assessment so far?

We'll agree to disagree. Like I said, Woody was a good defender when guarding someone down low, and he was also great at hedging screens on the perimeter but he was not a guy that intimidated ANYONE when it came to driving to the hoop. I haven't really noticed it being easier for guys to finish at the rim this year, but if it is it could very well have to do with inexperience on D (freshman PG, and Cook/Pemsl down low) than it does with how good Woody was.

Spot on. Combine that will 2 inexperienced post players.

I will say that in the non conference season people were getting to the rim at will, seton hall was especially brutal.

Touche. That game it was blatantly obvious. I was there, and was getting incredibly frustrated with how easy they were getting to the rim. But then again, that was also during the time when our team defense in general was just atrocious.

Hawks have a game worth of video to study and find ways to improve for tomorrows game. Another learning experience, so lets see what happens. A mistake is nothing more than a learning opportunity!

I also miss Woody's defense, but it isn't fair to compare SENIOR Woodbury to FRESHMAN Pemsl.

I would say if you go back to Woodbury's freshman year, you'd take Pemsl over him every single time. Pemsl is only going to improve from here and he's already really good.

I miss Uthoff, Aaron White, Marble, Haluska, Reggie Evans, Dean Oliver, Andre Woolridge, and a lot of Hawkeyes.

Is Woodbury at the top of former Hawkeyes I miss? Nope. Would I like the 2016/17 Hawkeyes to rebound better? Yep. Does that mean at the expense of the improved post scoring we've seen this year? Nope.
