Are you religious?

I try not to repeat the same sins.

Confession is very freeing. I usually feel serene afterwards.

You'd like it.

Indeed. As a convert, this was far and away the hardest part of my conversion. A good confession is...really good.

I tell people a good analogy is as simple as your breathing. When you go in, if you're in the right mindset, you take a deep deep breath of trepidation, and when you come out, you exhale a great sigh of relief.

There you go again, calling someone else out for what you're doing. Surprised you're not a Trump fan.

Of course I have flaws. It's a stupid question and misses the point. I'm not using my flaws as an excuse.

I don't excuse my flaws.

You're free to dislike me and think you're better than me.

100% your right and @BelemNole

You are seriously trying to use the church defining it's own members as 'saints' as somehow relevant?
I ignored it because it's a ridiculous argument.
The vast majority of catholics may not be criminals but what the CHURCH has done of the past 2 millennia IS.

Nope.

The Catholic Church is the largest charitable organization in the world.

It's a saint making machine.

Sure, there's also been so much good done in the name of religion, too but religion only gets judged by it's abuses in modern times.

(Your list isn't accurate, BTW. The Holocaust was done by atheist Adolf Hitler in the name of racial superiority.)

The first orphanages were invented by Christians. So were universities.

Would you rather live in an atheist society like the Soviet Union or Communist China??

How about ancient Rome?

Christianity has been intricately intertwined with the history and formation of Western society. Throughout its long history, the Church has been a major source of social services like schooling and medical care; an inspiration for art, culture and philosophy; and an influential player in politics and religion.

"...what have the romans ever done for us...?" :)

What do you think is the purpose to life, Belem?

You too, @RileyHawk

The Church didn't spread AIDS, actually. Living the church teachings would have brought the AIDS cases to 0.
So you acknowledge that Catholics are flawed.
But the church is not.
The church apparently knows this too, right?
And the church set forth a policy that would lead to the deaths of those who are 'flawed'. But somehow that's not the church's fault.....

Religious and spiritual are different. I believe in God. Religions are inventions of men. Often to make money.
Whenever someone says this, I ask them to explain the difference. The answers tend to be rare and unclear. It's your turn.

Can you help a poor atheist out? I mean I know I'm not religious, but could I be spiritual? How would I know?

The doctrine of the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit and is perfect.

Churches are full of saints, serial killers and everything in-between.

Understood.

I have a different view.

The only purpose to life I can think of is to attain the Beatific Vision through sanctification after death.
I'm happy that you have a new ridiculous term you can spend the next 7-10 months telling everyone about. Everyone needs a hobby.

Whatever makes you feel better for being a hypocrite, Riley.

Kindly go away and insult someone else.
Eat me.

You're nothing more than a pious charlatan who uses religion to excuse your behavior. If you don't want to read the insults then GTFO.

You don't know me.

You're a self righteous hypocrite, Riley. You won't admit any of your flaws.

I'll just put you on ignore and you can throw out vile insults to whomever you want.

You are not a good person.

Fraud.

Pussy. You're one of those losers who can dish it out but can't take it. You can't point out one thing in this thread that I am hypocritical about.

I certainly can. You judge others and do the exact same thing like toss insults.

I read your posts. You love insulting people on HROT then act like I'm sanctimonious. 😆 🤣 😂

You're like a man-child with your insults and hypocrisy.

Goodbye.

LOL - figures you don't even know what hypocrisy is. I never claimed judgement is a "flaw" like you have - that's just one of the blatant occurrences in your string.

You're as cowardly as you are ignorant.

Modern use of "spiritual" tends to reference a belief in, focus on, and/or claim to attempt to guide one's life by broader/higher philosophical principles of the moral good, which may or may not be religiously sourced, but which are generally viewed as not "merely" rational (eg, 'natural law"), and yet are implemented in a way that is individually focused. (So yes, as an atheist, you may be spiritual, and from an RC perspective, the good news is, you may still even have some theoretical shot at long term redemption, albeit with a fair bit of time in the waiting room!!! :) )

Religion, by contrast, definitionally contemplates a deity, who will often/usually provide 'life lessons' as above, but the life lessons are not an end to them themselves or a mere "self-help book", but rather a way for individuals and/or groups to structure one's life to be aligned with the moral good of the deity, which is the broader point - a structured relationship with god. In catholicism, lots and lots of soteriology baked into that.

I agree. It doesn't really make sense to be "spiritual" but not religious.

It's cool.

I can also prevent scandals in the Church by calling 911.

While you and I won't be engaging on this in detail, I will offer you a few sample quotes...

"pussy"
"eat me"
"loser"
"gfY"
"go to hell"
"bullshit rationalization"

Now those are the terms of truly engaging argument.

Look at his post history.

Riley insults many posters that way. It's pretty sad.

Best to just ignore him.

Those aren't arguments. JFC.

Maybe "spirtual" can mean someone with a connection to the universe?

You can’t prevent anything because it’s happening outside your purview on every continent …keep deluding yourself

But if you’re ever in St Louis you should call 911 because Robert Carlson is the Archbishop of St. Louis and he is uncertain if childhood rape is a crime - he said so publicly, on the record, under oath. Call 911.

I've never been to St. Louis myself.

There's abuse happening all day everyday in every segment of society, unfortunately. This is a pretty bad world.

Abuse is very common. Remember the Boy Scouts and Penn State?

1 out of 4 women are sexually abused during their lifetimes.

1 out of 6 men are.

I'll do what little I can to improve the world.

You can do the same since there's documented abuse by Buddhists monks in your Buddhist tradition.
