I've been to Carver, Hilton, and the Barn in Des Moines. Personally I like Hilton best. Moving around is so much better. However, they have no cones so that is a negative. I liked the Barn because because it was old (won a basketball championship in 84 so that might color my opinion). I've never been to the new arena.

Yes. I've been to the Five Seasons, but it's been a very long time ago (1984). I was in the crowd at the 5 Seasons Center for the Kennedy/ Linn Mar basketball game. I was also at Carver for the Kennedy/Linn Mar substate game. Kennedy won on a last second shot. That game was the only boys basketball game in Carver. Good memories! No I have not been to the Mark.

Like many arenas, Carver was designed to be "multi-purpose". It's an excellent facility, but not a great basketball arena. I hope the money they plan to spend there will make it better for the fans.

Tear it down.
Was crappy when it opened and never got any better.

good point, hawk_4shur. CHA opened in 1983, and seems designend like a 1970s multi purpose stadium like Riverfront in Cincy or Three Rivers in Pittsburgh. Makes for a mediocre fan experience.

Comfort and atmosphere don't always go together.
I like CHA for comfort of the seating and decent views from multiple areas and sight lines.
But it's not a great pure basketball venue if you're trying to cultivate a home court advantage.

If we could replicate the Barn that would be worthwhile. As far as I remember the atmosphere was pretty darn cool.
People who are overly nostalgic about old stadiums should be blessed with kids who excel at Track and Field so that they are required to sit at Drake Stadium for 3 straight days every year.

I have a good friend who won the 4x4 relay. The record they set stood for many years. We're talking about 1985! With all of the new training techniques and such one would have thought that the record they set would have been broken many times over. The fastest guy in school didn't even run track.

I was there too! I still say it was the most enjoyable game I have ever watched in my life. High quality play from both teams and 1/2 of Carver was green and gold (Kennedy) and freaked out whenever something went their way and the other 1/2 was red and black (LM) and freaked out whenever something went their way. There was A LOT of freaking out, as both teams played an exciting, back and forth game.

If I have ever been in an arena/stadium where there was such an even split of fans, fans that were highly energized, I can't recall it. I sat behind one of the baskets, low on the floor, so close that I could easily hear the players talking to one another on the floor.

Went to the Well and watched the doubleheader and that's the most uncomfortable arena seating I've ever sat in to watch a game in.

They used to have great concerts there, but they haven't for a long time. I'm blaming Steve Alford, they seemed to have stopped during his tenure.

ah the good old days

Was that CRWash63?

My dad took me and my brother to the Feild House when the basketball was in the final 4. The place was packed to the gills. I love the Flying Herky in the background. It is still my favorite Herky. I wonder what happened to it.
Very impressive but it Oakes in comparison to the “flying four” is Des Moines North in the late 40s. They set NATIonal Recirds that lasted more than 20 years.
Unless I’m remembering it wrong.

The Well is awesome. I can't understand some of you sometimes.

Carver sucks.

Hilton sucks, but it is loud given all the concrete, so it is fun.

The Barn was a POS.

The good old days when U of I was actually was held accountable for spending within a budget. They recycled the iron bleachers from the old football stadium on the east side of the river as Kinnick was being built as well. I remember discussion about needing a new arena when I was there (1974) at which time the Fieldhouse would have been about 46 years old although it seemed ancient already. Now HCA is 40 years old, yet still seems like a newer facility, even though I agree it's never been fan friendly. Unfortunately with the new wrestling addition HCA is here for another 100 years...

Nope. Just spelling it wrong.

Sorry... my smart-ass couldn't be contained.
