*****Auburn QB Hank Brown COMMITS to IOWA while visiting Dec 12 & 13 (3 Years Eligibility)*****

I like the quick, accurate passer & red zone QB combo. Maybe Brown & Sullivan can become the McNamara & Sullivan that never materialized.

Maybe I’m alone, but I think B. Sullivan as our starter next year is a good option. Any QB ready to beat Sully in an open competition is going to be very expensive. I’d rather that money go towards getting a WR, LT, or bolstering the defense.

So someone like Hank Brown makes sense to me. Brown can add depth next year and have a legitimate chance to start once Sullivan graduates.

I guess I’m coming around to this approach as well. Rather add a couple of starter level linemen or WR than take a flier on an expensive QB.

Under the new 105 rule, every student athlete on the roster gets a schollie
No, that is just how many you are allowed to give.

The SEC has already announced they will continue to give 85 scholarships, so they will still have 20 non-scholarship players.

I suspect the B1G will do something similar? I don’t know if that has been announced.

Is this by conference decision or each school's decision? I thought each school could decide how many to give out. Does not make sense to tell schools they can only give out 85 scholarships and allow them to give scholarship money through NIL. That is what some schools are already doing.

I don't understand that. The only reason for restricting the number of schollies to 85 was the NCAA limitation. Now the only limitation is the 105 roster limit. Why not give everyone on the roster a scholarship?

They can give all 105 a scholarship or they can do partial scholarships as well.

NCAA Scholarship Rules: What’s Changing?

Let’s explore the changes coming to NCAA D1 sports for the 2025-2026 academic year if the settlement is approved.

  • No Scholarship Cap: NCAA D1 schools will be able to offer scholarships to every athlete on their roster, eliminating previous sport-specific limits. This means schools will have more flexibility in financially supporting their athletes, increasing the number of potential college sports scholarships.
  • New Roster Limits: NCAA is introducing new roster limits that match or exceed current scholarship restrictions for each sport. With scholarship caps gone, most programs will be able to offer more scholarships. However, they must follow the new NCAA roster limits for each sport. For example, NCAA football scholarship limits will have a roster cap of 105 players, up from 85.

You just never know how these things will turn out. The kid clearly has some talent or Auburn wouldn’t have replaced their original starter with him for a couple games. He was a redshirt freshman this year. And best of all, Brian hasn’t been able to say shit to him to royally mess him up.

Maybe, just maybe, Tim Lester will actually have a positive impact on him and the kid turns out to be a decent quarterback for Iowa. At the very least, he can probably be a reliable backup who has actually had some game experience—unlike Deacon Hill and Marco Lainez.

Personally, I am on board with Sullivan being the starter in 2025. My greater concern is WRs and OL. Iowa has to fix that before the quarterback matters.
Largely agree. QB is kind of a crapshoot in evaluation. There is no substitute for actual game time experience and feedback. Even then, it can take several games or years for a guy to develop. Chuck Long was famously benched by Hayden Fry after his first start. But Hayden knew how to develop QBs, probably because he was one. Hoping Lester has the same touch.

I knew all this. Still don't understand a school like Iowa not giving out 105 scholarships in football.

Seems the lack of walk ons will hurt Iowa.

Hey, the kid has tools, coaches want him, and he apparently wants to be here. I’m in.
seems like Auburn fans were pretty high on this guy and wished he'd played more games. big arm, throws a good ball and has good football intelligence. More mobile than Petras and is comfortable in the RPO game. Could be a steal.

My guess is they are prepping to pay the athletes and they’re not wanting to dilute the pool. Just a guess.
I think it also has to do with Title 9 issues. They have to offer as many scholarships to women as they do for men. So if they hand out 105 scholarships for football, that's 20 more scholarships that have to be funded for women basketball players, field hockey players, gymnasts, etc.

I knew all this. Still don't understand a school like Iowa not giving out 105 scholarships in football.
Money is the likely answer, that also means another 20 scholarships to a women's sport. The SEC is navigating title IX by paying those kids through NIL rather than pumping another 20 scholarships into a women's sport.

If and that's a huge if, Brown is a depth piece, I would much rather hang on to Marco as the developing QB.

This doesn't say walk ons are eliminated, so we will still have to get 15 kids to walk on and contribute, much tougher now with the possibility of them getting a scholarship from a program that doesn't have walk ons and gives 105 rides.

Honestly, to a school like Iowa which projects $150 million in 2025 revenue, those few extra scholarships are pocket change.

You don’t HAVE to do anything. There is only one rule and that's a 105 roster limit. They can all be scholarship.

The athletic department owes over 200 million to the university, record profits last year netted them a surplus of 11.4 million. Add to the point where revenue sharing becomes a thing, this is far from a nothing burger.

I know this, but everyone on here says we aren't doing that
I have not heard that we are not giving more than 85 scholarships. Now they have not said if it is 105, partial scholarships or not.
I think it will depend on if they need to give more or not to get a player or keep one.
At least I have not seen anything for the U of IA in a press release. Are they waiting on the Big Ten?

it will be a decision made by the conference

That is incorrect. They all have the OPPORTUNITY to get a schollie. Iowa is not going to up its scholarship limit from 85 for the forseeable future. Nor are most other teams. No one is ready to add women's scholarships, which they would have to do if they upped the football scholarships from 85. So as it stands, Iowa plans on having 85 scholarship football players and 20 walk-ons.
