Can we tell how good the B10 is this season? Sure there are ranked teams, but as a whole the conference is a combined 9-11 in non-conference road games.

We all know it's tough to win on the road, but good teams do it.

The current AP Poll has 6 Big Ten teams in
the top 25. Once the BiG schedule starts
in earnest they will start beating one another.
There is no one standout Big Ten team at
this point. (Ohio St. Mich. Mich St. Penn St.
Maryland and Iowa are ranked.)

Big 10 is the strongest conference and the only league close is the Big East.

Michigan St and Ohio State are potential Final 4 teams but don't really see the star player on either of those teams to win it all. Not sure what Langford's status is, if he's out for the season or not. He makes a huge difference for them, another athletic wing. Big East is super deep, Providence the worst team and they are not bad. If we can stay healthy, which is going to be tough w/our small bench, I honestly could see us making the sweet 16 w/the right seed. Certainly no dominant team as evidenced by all the turmoil at the top this year, anything can happen. I have no idea who I would even start w/for the Final 4 right now.

KenPom, which ranks conferences based on the efficiency that would be expected to be needed in order to finish .500 in league play has the B1G as #1... it depends on the weight you give the bottom feeders, as Nebraska and NW are dragging down the rest in NET and RPI.

Every league has a few bad teams. With 14 teams, some team is going to stink.

Hoiball can't start beating the big guys over night. Lol

I found a site that averages the NET ranking....Big10 3rd there also:

http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2020/conferencenet

Northwestern and Nebraska are really bad; all the other teams are close to/above top 50 NET rankings

12 of the 14 teams are good/great. NW and NE are really bad for P5 teams. For example, the BE doesn't really have an elite team (Butler is close), but 7 of the 10 teams are Top 50 Kenpom, and the other three are Top 80.

The B1G has three teams as good or better than Butler, and 12 of the 14 are #53 or higher...then NW and NE are both bad.

As SSG T explains, it is TBD whether the B1G truly has a title contender. Michigan St. is short a few players they were expected to have. Ohio St. seems to be struggling recently and is losing Kyle Young for a spell. Purdue has looked good, but the results are underwhelming. Michigan had a good run, but has come back to earth... this list goes on.

We do, however, have 12 teams that are capable of beating anyone on any given night (yes, even potential #1 seeds). The league is incredibly balanced with the potential exceptions of Nebraska and Northwestern.

The crazy thing is that you know Nebraska has the power to get some teams. They were close to beating Indiana on the road.

Northwestern is the odd one. How did they get so bad?

Recruiting misses. Northwestern is an exceedingly difficult place to recruit to. You have to find kids with an Ivy/Patriot League type classroom ethic who also have the athletic ability to compete night in and night out with the kind of talent MSU/OSU/Maryland bring into the league.

Practically impossible to pull off over the long run.

Winning in March is about who’s hot at the right time. We have lots of teams in the conference that can make a deep run or even win it this year. I would include Iowa in that list. We are a scary team to game plan against on a short turn around.

But this is what is odd to me. Stanford, Vandy, Northwestern are all in the same boat as Duke. How does Duke do it?

He has been ruled out for the remainder of the season....as he is already a fifth year senior, his eligibility is used up at the college level...just a side note, he has the opportunity to petition the NCAA for the "Jess Settles sixth year of eligibility" if he so chooses....yet to be determined.

There are a limited number of recruits that fit this mold and right now Duke is destination number 1....

That is very true but I always go back to when Duke had Boozer, Williams, etc... and I remember the broadcast telling us that every player was a communications major.

Things that make you go hmm...

I really like this post and agree.....just get into the tourny, get hot at the right time and hope the NCAA tourny gods bless you kind matchups you can take advantage of for as many long weekends as you can. Just get in....

I think the loss of Langford moves MSU down to the pack competing for the B1G title, instead of the clear favorite. There don't seem to be any great teams out there in any conference from what I have seen. As others have said, the B1G has 12 teams that are good to very good, and injuries/luck will determine who among that group misses out on the dance. Iowa is one of the more vulnerable with all of the injuries...

Almost every week is a big game, and I think the PSU game is a big one for both teams, if they want to have a shot a the top 4/5 in the B1G.

I know it is real early but beating PSU would set up us nicely for now. MSU has not played anyone in the BT right now. I hope OSU does not give Wisky hope but they are trying to right now.
