B1G conference play in full swing

It is a record. Largest margin against Top Ten on the road. 😳
Oregon is probably not a legit top 10 team (although they did beat Alabama and Tex A&M) but still...a 32 point win on the road is a huge outlier performance for this league. I wonder how many times a Dana Altman coached team has been beaten by 20+?

Calling it now -- Iowa by 12 (91-79) on 2/25 in Champaign.

There is no legit top 10 team in the B1G.
There are a few top 20. But most between 20-50. It's a balanced league. Not a great one.

Washington knocked off Maryland. Is Washington not as bad as everyone thought?
Some of both. wash is not a good team, but they're not terrible. The terps have some good pieces and they are decent. But they're inconsistent in team play and effort.
I'm expecting plenty of this in the B1G this season. No great, dominant teams.

Agree to disagree. Kenpom and Torvik have Illinois #8 and #5 respectively, and they certainly look the part to me. Especially, since they're so young, and new to each other, and have a significant margin for improvement between now and March.

There's no Purdue with a human cheat code this season but there are some very good teams in the league. It won't be surprising at all to see a B1G team in the Final Four, imo. UCLA, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State.... Maryland. All really solid teams that can play with anyone.

Thankfully the Giant graduated from Purdue. The B1G hasn't been a great conference in Basketball for awhile now, which contrasts with the 1980's, 90's, early 2000's when Big10 was winning a lot of National Titles.

With the advent of NIL, the Big10 does have a lot of sports revenue money which might show up in Basketball over next few years. This is
especially true if the Revenue sharing gets implemented for NIL. Already in Football with Oregon, PSU, Ohio State all top football powers and MIchigan signing a $10 million qb, the Big10 money effect is showing up.

Let's hope for a fair whistle at Kohl Center. Frankly, I don't care much if Northwestern got screwed as long as Iowa doesn't get screwed.

"A lot"

80s -- Indiana ('81, '87), Michigan ('89)
90's -- ZERO B1G teams won a Title -- 0
00s -- Michigan State ('00)

4 championships in 30 years (now 40+)....ah, yes...the golden age of B1G basketball.

National championships is really a dumb way to measure the strength of a league because the single elimination format is a terrible way to determine the best teams.

Going by final fours, the B1G has been the second or third best league in the country for most of the last 40 years. I don't think any league comes close to putting the number of different teams in the FF over that time. Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois...that's also a sign of a strong league.

I'm not seeing it.
I will be surprised if a B1G team makes the FF.
Oh, they'll get plenty of bids for the dance. Just not seeing any right now that has what it takes to make that run when it really matters.

You better play defense or Illinois will put 100 on you at home.

I will say that Illinois is a very young team. Everyone on the team could be back next year. Obviously not happening with Jakucionis on the team, though. They are much better now than they were a month ago. Hope that trend continues but you never know with young teams.

Yes you are correct, I agree Final 4's and Elite8's and Sweet16's are better metric because winning the title is so binary--so I mispoke. That said, although 1990's didn't have a title for B1G, the year 1989 and the year 2000 did have B1G ten teams as champions--that is dry spell of 11 years. The current B1G dry spell in NCAA mens basketball titles is 24 years although we did have some 2nd place finishes.

By Final4's Big has been around 6-7 appearances in each of the 1980's, 1990s, 2000's, and 2010s.

In the 2020's the B1G has 1 final four team in 4 years...so that is down from past Trend. Also B1G has more teams now than it had in 1980s, 1990's, 2000's.

I think the original statement by someone was the Big10 doesn't have many elite teams---i.e. teams that will make sweet16, elite 8s, final 4s, and win a title. WE don't appear to have a dominant team like Purdue this year. The year is yet to play out but I think the statement that we aren't elite at the top and that B1G is down from where it used to be in basketball are accurate. The addition of Oregon, UCLA will make B1G stronger In basketball vs past additions of Rutgers and Nebraska. So maybe we will yet see 6 or 7 final-4s by B1G teams in the current decade.
