B1G Officiating

We are #2 in the Big 10 in free throws attempted and only #4 in personal fouls per game, not sure we're in a position to be complaining about fouls...

I don't get this reasoning.....it is consistently this way for a reason: Fran teaches a style of defense that is not as physical, hacking, slapping, grabbing, as other coaches in the B10....in addition the Hawks are an aggressive offensive team that tends to draw fouls, especially while playing against the types of defenses I just mentioned.

The consequence is that Iowa should shoot more free throws by far than the opponent......what it in no way does, is prevent the opposition from hacking away. My guess is that when the physical nature of the opponents defense isn't slowing the Hawks down, those players tend to get more physical to try and affect the Iowa offense.

I have to add that I have complained about officiating when we win. Statements about people only complaining when we lose, or to make the assumption that officiating couldn't make the difference in a win/loss is just not a logical assumption.

That said, I get that officiating is a very very (maybe impossible job) to do perfectly. My main complaint is the lack of consistency....and I don't pretend to know how that is corrected. To many games with to many different types of players, with to many different coaching methods, in to many different conferences...etc..etc.

We absolutely complain the most about officiating however I think most of it comes from our lack of success the last 20 years. We actually complained about the officiating against Wisconsin when clearly the whistle benefited us. I try to be objective but most Hawks fans can’t. Not sure why.

We complain about officials because some just aren’t any good at what they’re paid handsomely to do. It’s not just Iowa, it’s every damn game and team. Certain officials get criticized constantly, Bo Boroski and Larry Scirotto to name a few. Why?

I was listening to a local sports show where the host went on hid ‘I never hear people complain about the officiating when teams win’ he was a bit of a smart a** jackwagon about us ‘dumb fans’ then proceeds to talk about some bad calls in the Maryland game. Hopefully someone pointed out the inconsistencies there. Oh and people do talk about officiating even when their team wins. Bad officials are bad officials.

I know I do!! :D

yes...our play is very deep post dependent...Garza is a beast and he's big which makes him very difficult to officiate..especially when he's getting double teamed...his game is to make contact with the defender to get leverage...if a defender is in LGP(legal guarding position) or walled up they are allowed to jump in their vertical cylinders and just because Garza jumps into that and makes heavy contact doesn't warrant a foul...it happens on nearly every post catch he makes
you have been playing attention to your rule book and case book , good job .

Papabeef...I'm curious if all the posters can explain any of the following: primary coverage to secondary coverage and what determines this? restricted arc requirements such as primary vrs secondary defender, paint initiated plays, jump stops inside the arc, can you take a charge inside the arc but behind the glass? What must a defender already inside the arc do to maintain LGP and not have automatic block called on them? OIC(offense initiated contact) and LGP(legal guarding position both vertically and obliquely). Can a cylinder play be called on a player defending a moving ball handler? Is a stepback legal and if so, what is the criteria? Differentiate between a jumpstop you can pivot off of and one you cannot? How does the gather affect the pivot foot on a jump stop? When given a choice of 1) player control 2) block 3) no call...what goes into that decision making? I'll start with those...want to learn from the posters....that good for starters?

They have been horrible today. Illinois hook on back to back possession, neither called, score on both possessions. Yet somehow Iowa always gets called for doing the exact same thing.

Officiating is hard, a very hard job. Its easy to cheat. There is no accountability for errors or dishonesty.

Ol' John Hayden knew the score The guy that did the terrible replay calls against Nebraska this year was a field official when Hayden walked the sidelines. As Hayden said "we're not getting any love from that guy".

Mike Eads isn't a bad official, I see him in other games. But he obviously hates McC (big blow out years ago against UNI I think). Terrible calls and no calls in almost every game with Iowa.

I despise the "it's a hard job" excuse for bad officiating. Lots of people have hard jobs, but that's not an excuse for doing it poorly.

"I'm sorry Dr. Smith accidentally killed your wife on the operating table...he has a hard job."
"I'm sorry the fire fighters blew up your house instead of putting out the small paper fire. It's a hard job."
"I'm sorry we put the wrong brakes on your car and caused excessive damage to the rotors...our job is hard."
