Good thing it's not a key swing state at election time. King Obama has once again chosen to bypass Congress and use his almighty executive order to change the name of Alaska's Mount McKinley to "Denali". The move corresponds with his upcoming trip to our nation's 56th state. It is an egregious affront to the people of Ohio - the home state of President William McKinley, who was gunned down in cowardly fashion by leading liberal Leon Czolgosz in 1901.

Denali is an Athabascan word meaning "the high one". The White House claims this move is intended to honor the traditions of the native Alaskan people. But it's pretty obvious the real intent is a shameless endorsement deal for General Motors.

What I find funny is that part of his objective for this trip is to raise awareness about climate change.

Do you have any idea how much greenhouse gasses are released for a presidential trip? Let's just say that Air Force One is not the only plane that has to fly to the destination.

For the record I have no problem with the president going where he needs to go and having the proper security and equipment sent ahead of time. But the president taking a trip to raise awareness about climate change stinks of hypocrisy. In order to tell everyone about it he boards his own personal 747 whilst also sending ahead at least one military cargo plane and then requiring them both to fly back after the trip.

The pope told people about climate change by releasing a paper on the topic that you can just look up online and read in several different languages.

When I read the headline "Obama to rename tallest Mountain in US," I thought 'oh great, here comes mount Obama' or something along those lines... Then I read the article. Naming a mountain after a president is ridiculous, and I never realized Mt. McKinley was actually named after a president to begin with. Obama, merely using the name that the natives have wanted for years (Denali) is the right thing to do. Well done Mr. Obama, great decision.

Now, on to the debate about how much it matters...

You didn't realize Mt. McKinley was named after the former president? Who did you think it was named after?

And I hate to be the one to break it to you, but there are a whole bunch of mountains in New Hampshire that are named after presidents.

Fair enough, to be honest, I've never given it a second thought. It was just Mt. McKinley.

You need to get out more.

I did know that but to be fair McKinley is not exactly the first guy people think of when it comes to naming US presidents.

Honestly McKinley is most famous for getting shot so that Teddy Roosevelt could be president.

He's not exactly a big name president.

Not to worry 122,413 liberals are going to turn off the lights for 8 hours as a carbon offset for the trip.

Has an American POTUS ever renamed a mountain, national park or national monument before? I know Teddy Roosevelt started the national park system and thus had the right to name some of them.

I can see why people from Ohio, McKinley's home state would be upset. If the mountain was located in Ohio, they would have a strong case. Since Denali is in Alaska, home of the Athabascans, native American peoples, it's not worth arguing about.

Some cynics might call this a meaningless, narcissistic gesture by our President's intended only to highlight his unsurpassed virtue. But really, think about it, isn't it about time we made it right with the Indians and called it square.

They are the Federal Government's 150+ year long experiment in Socialism.

How else can we understand the impact of owning a group of people body, mind and soul if we don't continue this patronizing experiment of oppressive government on Indian reservations.

I would hope we could all agree that the vaunted Federal government's treatment of American Indians was, and is, a disgrace. Obama's grandstanding on Mt. McKinley is embarrassing. He might as well having driven his presidential motorcade by a reservation and thrown a sandwich out the window.

Ah, I see. This week he's the iron fisted tyrant. Next week the incompetent boob. Nice to be able to keep up with the wingnut theme of the week!

it is incompetence to go around congress, to not have to deal with them, the rules, the legit way, and to just throw a tantrum and try and get your way

I doubt the residents of the great State of Ohio are really going to care that much. If it was Mt. Hoover, I can't name anyone of outside of West Branch that would give two $hits about what a mountain in Alaska was named.

As a side note, it's good to see that we can all come together and agree that the next President should have to walk or bike to all 50 states for their visits, regardless of political affiliation.

How would renaming a mountain "Square" make things right with Indians?

My first thought was to name the mountain Even, but I thought Square sounded like squaw and thus more Indianish.

Many of the lakes in Manitoba are named after Canadian World War 2 pilots as a way of honoring them. Should the names of all these hundreds of lakes now be changed back to their native monikers?

You would think Obama would have a LOT to do but apparently he must have a great deal of time on his hands.

If the local people want the names change, you bet they should have it.

Have the Canadians been petitioning to have the lakes changed back to their "native monikers" since 1975? Don't let facts get in the way of your outrage.

Because signing an executive order takes so much time ...

Republicans are quickly running out of things to complain about him. Seriously an "egregious affront" to the people of Ohio? SMH

Yes they absolutely been doing this, or at least the Native population has been doing this. I have spent quite some time in Manitoba and I can tell you this is a big deal up there. You heard they gave the entire Northwest Territory back to the natives, right? You aught to be informed before you try to start an argument.

You pretty much don't even know what you're arguing, do you?

If you're talking about the Cree tribe, than most of them have since moved down and share a reservation in Montana with the Chippewa. So they aren't citizens of Canada any longer. Not to mention there are close to 4,000 lakes in the NW provinces of Canada (some with their aboriginal origin still in place today). So I'm failing to see how this is a good comparison to ONE mountain in a state where most of the natives still live today.

Did you know they also named a lake after Johnathon Towes of NHL fame last summer too? Those crazy Canucks love them some NHL.

Denali National Park is awesome, by the way.

Yes, it is. I was there earlier this summer. By the way, this was in June and "everybody" in Alaska already calls the mountain Denali. They of course know what you mean when you call it McKinley and some people use both words... but it seems to me the people that live there (and frankly anybody who has visited) already call it Denali. This is a silly "controversy".

We were there in June (2003) and could not see the mountain. Were told few see it in the summer. Could you see it?

Don't come crying to me when Obama's decision to kowtow to a couple hundred Koyukons costs Democrats the state of Ohio (and consequently the general election) in 2016.

Less than 20% of Alaska's indigenous population still knows how to speak Athabascan. Why do they have their thermal underwear in a wad over whether or not the lower 48 refers to their mountain by the Anglicanized version of a word from a language they don't even remember how to use?
