Trump vows to rename Denali, North America's tallest mountain, as Mt McKinley

So it was McKinley for close to a century before libs got offended/renamed it? Had a better run than the Cleveland Indians or the Washington red skins, at least (i think)

Link to Native Alaskans being offended liberals. Also, without googling, please tell me when Alaska first became a state and subsequently when Alaska got state rights to even formally request the name be reverted back to what it was before it was changed by the Democratic administration.

Oh, they're not offended by it? No need to continue then. Name change is good to go. /thread

Thank you for thoroughly proving my point. This ONLY matters to Alaskans so why does Trump give a crap? Here's your timeline:

FOR CENTURIES: Mountain called Denali
1917: Mountain renamed after some dead president who has zero ties to said mountain.
2015: Mountain renamed to original name at the behest of the Native Alaskans.
2025: Trump, who's also never seen the Mountain nor has any ties to it, wants to change it back.

Why does Trump care about this mountain? The issue was finally resolved nearly a decade ago. Why mess with it? As you said, no one in the lower 48 gives two flying farts about the mountain, so why does Trump want to piss off Native and Resident Alaskans?
Don’t know, and don’t care that’s my point…people can identify the mountain as whatever they want. That’s the new rules we live by right? It doesn’t matter if it’s a boy mountain or a girl mountain or what the mountain’s name is… or if it’s even a mountain at all… it can say Mount McKinley on paper but if the locals call it Denali then who the hell cares?

You’re trying to explain something to a complete
Moron. Wasting your time.

I don't think bro was trying to explain anything to you tbh
You know what really ticks them off? They want to call other people morons because they’re so tolerant and accepting lol but are too dumb to realize they’re calling other people morons while not being able to tell you the difference between a boy and a girl. They put Trump back in office because it was so important to them to blur the lines of gender and sanity.

I'm not calling anyone a moron. ...trying to have a rational discussion about a singular topic that's ONLY tied to the wishes of Native Alaskans. I'm not the one bringing in gender identity or any other topic OR tying this to politics.

Also, no one who supports the renaming of the Mountain has explained to me why this is important to Trump or people in the lower 48 who do not care about it at all.

Trump somehow sees this as an issue that he can use to rile up the MAGA numpties. Calling it Denali means you're woke. You know, a DEI submission to Eskimos.

You can't yield an inch to wokeness.

Except for the fact it was a Democratic Admin that renamed it to McKinley and a Republican Senator that led the charge to have it changed back to its original name. I've been assured by the MAGAs of the thread that NO ONE cares about this issue, so my question remains, if NO ONE cares, then what does Trump gain from this? This ONLY matters to Native and Resident Alaskans, so what does Trump have against Alaska? Last time I checked, Alaska was a red state, not a blue state.

I guess this is where I disagree. I agree that deferring to the opinion of Alaskans on this matter is the right move, but plenty of other people are going to care.

Probably for political reasons.

Sums up a Trump supporter rather well. You should have stopped there, but you just had to be an aggrieved victim, too.

Yeah, but these are the same people that think Jesus is too woke.

Fair enough. I can't explain it either. He must be hearing it from some where or someone that they want it changed? I won't give him the credit of coming up with this on his own.

Personally, I'd rather it be called whatever the local people call it or want it called. This seems like a dumb thing for Trump to worry about. No matter what the mountain is called that won't do anything for inflation or the border or Israel or Ukraine... these are the issues people voted for Trump for, not some mountain in Alaska

That's it in entirety. Nothing complicated. He knows half of his based are racists and will say "F-Yeah!" to going back to calling a mountain a white man's name rather than some foreign-sounding name. And the other half are okay with this crap because they also like having the racist half of their party riled-up, and they love that it pisses off liberals.

None of this - none - has to do with good governance. It is an appeal to the worst part of our nature.

And it's working. Which is the saddest part of all.

Sorry if Pepsi (I searched for "Denali").

Trump vows to rename Denali, North America's tallest mountain, as Mt McKinley

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday he will rename Denali, Alaska natives' name for North America's tallest mountain, after William McKinley, the 25th U.S. president who was assassinated in 1901.

Democratic former President Barack Obama in 2015 officially renamed the mountain as Denali, siding with the state of Alaska and ending a decades-long naming battle. The peak had been officially called Mount McKinley since 1917.

"They took his name off Mount McKinley," Trump said in a speech to supporters in Phoenix. "He was a great president," Trump, a Republican, said, adding that his administration will "bring back the name of Mount McKinley because I think he deserves it."

The mountain, which has an elevation of more than 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), was named Mount McKinley in 1896 after a gold prospector exploring the region heard that McKinley, a champion of the gold standard, had won the Republican nomination for president.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, in the 2015 order that was signed by Obama changing the name to Denali, noted that McKinley had never visited the mountain and had no "significant historical connection to the mountain or to Alaska."

Denali, the local Athabascan name, meaning "the High One," was officially designated as the peak's name in 1975 by the state of Alaska, which then pressed the federal government to also adopt the name.

Since then, Alaska lawmakers had petitioned the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to change the name to Denali officially but it had been blocked for decades.

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, pushed back on Trump's pledge to rename the mountain.

"There is only one name worthy of North America’s tallest mountain: Denali - the Great One," Murkowski wrote in a post on X.

McKinley, who served two terms as governor of Ohio before becoming president in 1897, led the country to victory in the Spanish-American War and raised protective tariffs to promote U.S. industry, according to the White House website on presidents.

Other than your ratio of 50% racists, I pretty much agree here. I'm sad for you if you think we have millions and millions of racist people in this country. What a somber outlook on your fellow citizens.

He clearly doesn’t like Black people and he’s trying to erase things that Obama has done. And he’s petty.

What proof do you have of that or you just reciting from the BLM propaganda booklet?
Let's not discuss hypotheticals, theories or assumptions. Let's just focus on the facts at hand.

1. The name of the mountain is very important to Alaskans, both Natives and current/former residents.
2. The name of the mountain is very important to the Republican legislature of Alaska, a red state who supported the election of Donald Trump.
3. The name of the mountain is of little to no importance to the lower 48 as claimed by resident MAGAs (and I agree).
4. The name of the mountain is for some reason important to Donald Trump and resident MAGAs; specifically that it be named after McKinley. The question is why. No one has provided a reasonable answer as to why this is important to Trump or them.

@RicoSuave102954 can you and your constituents please provide a viable answer to #4?

The only viable answer I can give you is that SOME people have seen the renaming of sports teams, monuments, holidays, and now apparently mountains as an attack on American history, traditions, customs, etc. Trump thinks this particular culture war battle is worth waging. I think he's wasting political capital on this and it won't endear anyone new to him, it's just rubbing even his own people in Alaska the wrong way.

Because he’s a racist piece of shit.

You left out the most relevant bit of information.

The Naming of Mount Everest

thegreatarc

The Great Trigonometric Survey of British India, spanning several decades during the 19th century, identified "a stupendous snowy mass" through surveying instruments from above the hill resort of Darjeeling, over 140 miles away. The peak was initially named "Gamma" and then subsequently changed to "peak b" in 1847; it was suspected that "peak b" might be the highest mountain in the world, slightly higher than Kangchenjunga* which was considered to the highest mountain in the world at that time. After several more surveying measurements over the next few years, the great height of this new mountain was confirmed and "peak b" was renamed "Peak XV." After a delay of a few years to double-check their surveying measurements and mathematical calculations (correcting for light refraction, barometric pressure, temperature and tidal data), the British announced the official height of Peak XV to be 29,002 ft.** (8,839.8 m) in 1856, renaming it once again as "Mont Everest" (Andrew Waugh, report No. 29B, paragraph 9). The Royal Geographic Society subsequently pronounced the official name "Mount Everest" in 1865 based on the recommendation of Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. Sir George Everest was Waugh's predecessor in the post of Surveyor General. Sir George Everest in fact did not want the peak named after him, believing it is important to use local names, but Tibet and Nepal were closed to foreigners and local names were claimed by Waugh to be unknown or unconfirmed at the time. In the early 20th century, the acclaimed Swedish explorer Sven Hedin uncovered the centuries-old Tibetan name of Cha-mo-lung-ma," which in fact had been published on a map in Paris in 1733 by the geographer D'Anville. Therefore, the historic, local Tibetan name for Mount Everest is Chomolungma, also spelled Qomolangma, meaning "Goddess Mother of the World." Chomolungma is pronounced "CHOH-moh-LUHNG-m?." The Nepali name for Mount Everest is Sagarmatha, meaning "Godess of the Sky." Some refer to the entire massif of peaks as Qomolangma (Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse), reserving the name Mount Everest for the highest peak. The name "Mount Everest" nevertheless persists as the most universally recognized name throughout the world, synonymous with "a stupendous snowy mass" on the border of Nepal and Tibet in Earth's greatest convergent orogenic belt.

And I can understand that perspective to some extent, but if we blanket EVERYTHING under the "woke" moniker, then it blurs the lines between simple virtue signaling and being sincerely respectful to cultural differences. Team politics have completely stifled nuance.

Thank you for providing an actual answer. It's appreciated.
