Best American Rock Band EVER....

If you add all the parts, such as influence, sales, hits, number of live shows, and longevity, my unconventional pick would be Cheap Trick.

They influenced a bazillion 90s grunge and pop bands (Kurt Cobain, Eddie Veddar, Billy Corgan, David Grohl, the Melvins, Weezer, Fontaine’s of Wayne etc). Robin Zander is still amazing on vocals, Tom Petersson helped pioneer the 12 string bass, and Rick Nielsen is/was a great guitar player and song writer. Have played over 5000 shows since 1974, never one single year off. Top 10 hits over three decades. Millions of records sold. Hall of Famers. 20 studio albums and one legendary live album. Still going strong.

Hard to consider a band that played Ragbrai for $5 the greatest American rock bands ever.

Fun story: I knew a guy who owned a nice drinking hole late 60s through 80s in Tallahassee. Before they made it big, he got Lynyrd Skynyrd to come over and play some shows. He said they were amazing. But even crazier, he said he had another band out of Louisiana he would get come over and play and that they were way better. The other band never made it.

Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis Scotty and Bill, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Gene Vincent and the Bluecaps, Fats Domino, James Brown and the Fabulous Flames.

These lists always start in the 60s but they really should start and stop in the 50s with the original innovators and masters.

Grateful Dead in terms of money generated...

Others to consider: The Doors, K.I.S.S., Aerosmith...but personally, I'd go with The Black Keys as my favorite. Though I concede they are likely not in most people's top 10.

In all seriousness. In no particular order

Black crowes
Tom petty
Grateful Dead

Saw someone else mention the beastie boys. I like that one a lot, but probably not a rock and roll band.

I'm going with Lynyrd Skynyrd here.

I'll be at the Fight Bar at 4 for anyone who disagrees.

Now you have a top 32 that has Nirvana on it but doesn't include Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. Ixnay.

Yeah...well, I didn't want to include Nirvana either. You gotta make a stand somewhere. I did have Soundgsrden on it but realized I forgot Seger...and they lost.

You cannot win this one. Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame as a band. Criteria met.

Early Chicago, built around the great Terry Kath, would be my pick. The concert recording from Tanglewood is as good a show as has ever been performed by anyone, anywhere.

JFC that reads like the LA phonebook.

Until the qualifications for "best" are defined, everything here is an opinion of the individual poster.

For me personally, hammering out a list of contenders begins with The Beach Boys. I'd say others involved would include Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers Band, Van Halen, Nirvana, GnR, Metallica, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Doors, CCR, Grateful Dead, ZZ Top, Pearl Jam...those are just off the top of my head.

I doubt that I'd include Lynyrd Skynyrd in the top 15. One great album, one good album, the rest...meh.
