But like You said about Santana, TP is the draw. He went away and so did they.

If you think that, you need to go back and check out the Chicago of the early 70s. They were nothing like the scrappy love ballad Chicago of the mid 80s.

Kath's blistering guitar solo in this is as good as it gets.

My point was that Santana had a revolving door of "band members".... The Heartbreakers weren't like that at all.

Skynyrd had a few personnel changes before the plane crash, too, but mostly the same band.

Santana is a band. Period. I mean...his most famous songs were in English...which he doesn't speak.

Meh.

It's like saying Eric Clapton is a band.

No...it's not. Does some else sing for Clapton? Well...you know those songs like Black Magic Woman and Evil Ways? They were written and sung by people in the band because Santana doesn't speak English any better than Sammy Sosa. THE FACT THAT HE MJST HAVE A SINGER WITH HIM makes Santana a band.

If Santana was a solo act as you suggest, it would be all instrumental and no one would have bought one album.

Actually, Black Magic Woman was written by Peter Green when he was with Fleetwood Mac (and was originally performed by them). Santana simply did a great cover of it. That said, I agree with you that I would consider them a band.

One more thing, a couple of their best tunes are instrumentals. Hard to beat knocking down a cold beer while sitting on a sailboat, watching the sun sink & listening to Europa or samba pa ti

It's surprising how few people realize Black Magic Woman was early FM and not Santana's song. Here was another one I recently learned. I've done everything for you" was Rick Springfield's big hit......BUT the song was wrote and first recorded by Sammy Hagar. Sammy made more money off the royalties he collected from Rick's cover than he made off of his own performance.

Yuuuge like for The Minutemen...Mike Watt is seriously under appreciated.

Most underrated band of all time. D Boon made a 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list via Rolling Stone, but he was a truly original and underrated genius. And George Hurley may have been the best punk drummer ever, up with Rat from The Damned. Double Nickels on the Dime is the greatest American album ever written. D just couldn’t sing in a traditional sense, and they were way too thoughtful. The mainstream was never going to accept that.

I saw Cheap Trick along with Foreigner two years ago at Starlite Theatre in KC. Great show.

Cheap Trick and Foreigner both still have it. I saw both in the past two years and they were still great, Foreigner at Universal-Orlando as one of the Mardi Gras headliners and Cheap Trick at the Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City (you Iowans wouldn’t understand but it’s bigger than the Florida State Fair and they have an 11,000 seat stadium and amphitheater).

West Coast - Beach Boys
East Coast - Allman Brothers when Duane was alive.

Not mentioned yet I think and basically 2 guys with musician friends - Steely Dan.

For great pop songs - Paul Revere and the Raiders and 3 Dog Night. (Trying to think of some also not mentioned.)

Just a few names I haven't seen mentioned yet:

CSN
Grand Funk Railroad (THEY were an American Band)
The Band
Steppenwolf

A number of years ago as I was heading into a beachside bar in St Pete, there was a guy playing in the sand with his two little kids; the boy flung his little plastic shovel, which whizzed by right in front of my face. I looked at the dad as he was apologizing & realized it was Robin Zander (the lead singer for Cheap Trick).
I commented to the waitress that it was him; turned out he lived a couple of blocks away & was a regular there.

Steppenwolf and The Band were mostly Canadian. John Kay was actually born in Nazi-occupied East Prussia.
