I have never been to the tournament but would like to go this year. How does the ticket situation work for the first round since you have no idea when Iowa plays until a few days before? Do most people wait till then to buy a ticket?

The Wednesday tickets are good all day and general admission.
I believe the Big Ten Tournament is exclusively an all or nothing package if you go directly through the box office or the university ticket offices but they do have session passes that go on sale later on or that can be obtained through the secondary market. But if you're team ends up playing one of the better drawing teams (MSU, Indiana, Wisconsin and OSU), it's not a very good deal to have to have to wait to see when they're playing and get the individual session pass.
