Bohannon trolls NCAA

I wonder if we are getting closer and closer in having some college sports turn over to semi-pro leagues. This has worked well for baseball, so why not other sports?

Are we sure this isn't a spoof?
Yeah I think Jordan is somewhat tongue-in-cheek with this, if that's what you mean.

As far as the "getting paid" discussion. I think some of you are taking this to a greater extreme than the discussion necessarily warrants. I think some of these NCAA athletes simply want the right to be able to make money off of their name/image. If Jordan wants to make a t-shirt design with his name/likeness on it, why can't he? Seems to me he should be able to go down this entrepreneurial path without penalty. Or maybe he wants to do a podcast and solicit sponsorships. Who knows. Being told you can't because, you know, amateurism or whatever when everything around you is being bought and sold with you as the crux of the industry? In today's hyper-capitalization of the game, I can see why this is scrutinized by a lot of these kids.

Of course the problem then becomes these entrepreneurial efforts would then make it easier for "illegal" money to be funneled to them, but if the NCAA is supposedly monitoring that type of activity already, surely some type of system and regulation could at least be explored/considered.

The other route is that the school licenses the players name/image and includes a percentage for the player. So Iowa sells Jordan jerseys… why can't Jordan get a few bucks on each jersey?

I share the reticence of anything that takes NCAA athletics down this path of players being able to capitalize on their name while in school—certainly opens the door to even more shadiness, especially in regards to men's basketball and football. But I'm open to the discussion, though, and I'm not going to judge a kid, think him spoiled or ungrateful for entertaining the idea.

huh?
There are tons of people that will play football for less than millions a year, but nfl players are still making millions a year ;)

There are plenty of "actors" that will work for cheap, yet others still make millions.

NFL teams are for-profit franchises that need the best players to win and are willing to pay for them. The NCAA product is about the teams and fans of the team, not the individual players. If the top 500 best college recruits said they were not going to play for the next four years, the overall level of play would go down but it would settle at an equilibrium and everyone would still watch their favorite team.

If he could make thousands....then he can pay his own tuition. Makes no difference to me!
Why can't he have a scholarship that pays his tuition plus be able to make money off of his own name? If a student gets an academic scholarship and then goes on to make some sort of big academic discovery, I'm pretty they would be able to profit off of that. What's the difference when it comes to "student" athletes?

"Even the NCAA is confused about what’s supposed to stay at the sites and what can be carted away. Ron English, the NCAA’s director of men’s basketball championships, told The Wall Street Journal that the rugs were among the items teams were allowed to take.

“We want the players to have a home feel in their locker rooms,” Mr. English said. “When their time is over and they are leaving, win or lose, they can help themselves.”

But David Worlock, NCAA director of media coordination and statistics, later said the rugs are a no-go."

List of Power Conference athletes that felt so wronged they transferred to DIII schools?

Umm no. At Iowa, if you invent something, it belongs to the university. You get some proceeds. The patent is assigned in the school's name.

this has already been answered, he wouldn't have a name w/o the school. well, a name worth something ;)

also what is to stop a donor from paying kids millions for whatever they are hocking? It simply won't work....

Good point about the donor. That would be tough to guard against.
