Bowling and other thoughts

The Vallholls are going on a spring break to a country, located closer to the equator than Iowa, that Donald Trump may or may not be welcomed to visit. In anticipation of this trip, Mrs. Vallholl comes to bed rather excited the other night, which, I must admit, after 18 years of marriage, piqued my interest. My excitement was short-lived when Mrs. V. began to talk about this vacation. She showed me an iPad with the hotel’s website and asked me what I wanted to do on this vacation, specifically:

“Do you want to sign up to go bowling?”

“Bowling? Bowling, you say.”

As I took this question in, I considered bowling and all the other things on my mind, I started thinking and it went something like this…

Why is Spring Break the same time of year as NCAA Wrestling Championship(s)? What size of frying pan would I have to watch out for if I skipped the family trip and went to NYC?

Is NATO a better matchup for Gilman than Mega/Dance? Does Thomas even care?

Will Bradley Taylor beat Conaway again? If Richards is really a super hero, isn’t it unfair that he gets the 3 seed? Why is DiJullius, and those darn elbow holds, always there for Clark?

I wonder how many points Seth Gross will score at NCAAs? Why…? (nevermind)

Is Jake Sueflohn to Brandon Sorensen like Johnny DiJullius is to Cory Clark?

What if Edwin Cooper Jr. had been at Iowa for 5 years? Has anyone improved more over one year that ECjr? How many pages will the thread go when he earns his AA? Is it ironic to anyone else that Jake Ryan and Jojo Smith are wrestling first round to anyone else? Is Ian Miller really hurt? Would people have complained as much about Cooper’s loss to Gantt if they knew Gantt would be the #2 seed?

When Patrick Rhoads scores points this year, what kind of 165 dry spell will that break? What is it going to be like on HR if there is a Patrick Rhoads run at NCAAs?

Will Alex go back to his “Rope a dope” strategy of tricking people to get a couple first period TDs and then tire out in the 3rd period? Is Ethan Ramos any good?

Can Sammy Brooks get back to Dudley’s leg like that again? When was the last time the184lb NC came from Iowa?

What adjustments does Nathan have for MM? Who has got 197 next year? How much weight can Alex put on in the off season?

What if Stoll wasn’t hurt and got third at B1Gs, what would his seed have been? How many points can he get at NCAAs? Is Morningstar coaching Stoll how to wrestle on one leg? How much did Stoll improve in a year?

Can I disappear for most of Thursday and Friday and not be missed by my family?

Rubbing my chin for effect, I said:

“Bowling? If I don’t like to bowl in Iowa, why would want to bowl somewhere else?”

El Chapo types are common in your chosen vacation destination. Concierge services should be able to book you for two half-day kidnappings on Thursday and Friday. Make sure the ransom notes mention that things will get a lot worse if you or your family is seen at a bowling alley.

Brilliant!

Vall, I ponder the frying pan every spring, like clockwork. So far, the beach has trumped the mat.

Unfortunately the bar is set very low for Patrick. The good news is he could easily surpased our recent 165 pounders. Here's what he's up against:

2015 - Nick Moore - 0 points (two and out)
2014 - Nick Moore - 2 points (two consolation wins, one by major)
2013 - Nick Moore - 2.5 points (one consolation win by fall)
2012 - Mike Evans - 1 point (one championship bracket win)
2011 - Aaron Janssen - 3 points (three consolation wins, with a tech fall)

So we're averaging 1.7 points at that weight; we've had only one championship bracket win in five years; and Aaron Janssen has been our recent great at this weight with 3 points.

I can't wait for Alex M. to get here.

1) Thanks for the research.
2) Wow. Just wow.
3) Morningstar is our last AA?

Let me talk to your wife. I'll convince her.

And really...NYC? She goes to Broadway, shopping, fine dining (maybe her sister or friend can come with so she's not alone)...while you watch wrestling. Win-win-win.

I may have to enlist your help!

Actually, she was almost up for NYC after some time on the beach but we weren't up for all of that traveling in one week so we punted on Nationals.

Hoping to start early on the beach portion next year and get back in time to get down to St. Louis.

Once the kids are off to school, hoping to get her to Nationals every year. A guy can always dream.

Good thread...find this funny as my family is the EXACT opposite! I grew up wrestling and since birth lifelong follower/fan of Iowa wrestling (CLOSELY). Since I have experienced a lifetime of wrestling I would often times rather find a beach than NCAA's. Despite this, my wife is a FANATICAL wrestling fan and now "family" spring breaks are defined by wrestling. Needless to say my daughter HATES wrestling. So her spring break memories have consisted of quick trips to the Arch between sessions, Old Market, OKC memorial, and fortunate for her NYC, one of her favorite cities. BTW it is somewhat cold and rainy here and it is 5 o'clock somewhere.

WWDM wants to know if he can rent your wife for a week every year at NCAA's.

Hey wait.......I think that could be a money-making Cable Program.

"Wife Swap for Nationals" :)
