I know Iowa is loaded in the middle weights..... BUT impressive win for Berge.

No. 5 Brady Berge (160), beat No. 3 (at 152) Griffin Parriott (New Prague, Minn.) by 3-1 decision in the championship match.

More the merrier! He still has 2-3 years before he would hit the Iowa lineup. Could be anywhere between 165-184. Make it happen M*!

One thing I'm pretty sure of... It'll be Mark Hall 2.0, meaning he'll keep the Gophers in his top three. Then... he commits to Iowa and is a four year starter at 174/184.

And Minnesota fans will be pissed once again. Berge sees that the Gophers future minus J isn't very bright.

Hopefully he gets bigger. I think kaleb young ends up at 174. We do need an 84 after brooks is gone. Yes, I know we have wilke.
He has apparently grown quite a bit in the last year or so. IIRC, he wrestled 145 last season. The recruiting momentum with the Iowa program appears to be gaining strength and the prospect of having a Kemmerer and Alex M in front of you offers a pretty formidable 1/2/3 punch if/when Berge commits.
It's no secret that the Gophers have lost quite a few high profile in-State kids recently. I think Hall and Parriot see what is coming.

Mitch just clarifying, you think kids worry about the state of the program after J Rob leaves? I have heard more suggest J Rob's still being there causing worries. This just being the opinion of fans, not directly from those that would know. J's age does bring a different dynamic into recruiting that a lot of schools don't have. For better and worse.

Some people are pretty confident that Brady joins the Gophers, but I am a skeptic. That being said I have seen him at plenty of MN duals throughout the years including this year. He sure would look good in the lineup though.

Not sure if Brady will grow much more or not. Broc was 189 as a sophomore if I remember correctly. If he doesn't grow, IA having Young and Marrinelli on board would typically deter most people. Brady isn't most people though so not ruling it out. Brady certed at 152 this season.

I think J's "Real estate entrepreneurship program" was/is a big draw - especially to out of state kids - see Yohn brothers.. ;)

January 16th Brady and the K-M Komets travel south to Osage. Berge should match up with #1 ranked and Iowa commit Tristan Johnson. If you look at Brady's twitter page he has a lot of Iowa stuff that he retweets so I wouldn't rule the Hawks out of it.

No one is ruling the Hawks out, in fact, many believe Iowa is the team to beat for his services.

My main point is that Minny is a mess right now. Hall saw that. Parriot saw that. Stoll's success and bright future have to be a plus for the Hawks. Are there any Komets starting for other D-1 programs? Berge is very knowledgeable about both programs. He'll be a BIG catch for either team.

kem, young, the bull, troy, and brady berge that seems like pretty darn strong middle of the lineup to go along with the always outstanding lighter weights.

Don't rule out Penn State and the Mark Hall effect as well as everything else PSU has to offer.

IMO, he's a at least a three year starter wherever he goes. I know you never can be sure, but he's that good. No one knows what his priorities might be, but having your family relatively close may be very important.

Twin Cities to State College.
LOL! Cherry pick much? You might need to buy yourself a map. Kasson, MN is closer to the Iowa border than it is to the Twin Cities. All things are possible however, like they are for every kid that throws on a singlet and is good enough to go anywhere. In Berge's case however he is a Minnesota kid, with a former Iowa All-American as his Head Coach. Mark Hall is a nomad. They are not remotely close to the same situation.

How about the "Sam Stoll effect" to Iowa? They are from the same High School as you're aware I'm sure, as is his brother who attended Iowa then transferred to Minnesota. Or the "Keegan Moore effect" to Oklahoma State? Or the "Parriot effect" to Purdue? Those are all actual Minnesota born and bred kids I presume.

I can't wait for Spencer Lee to get the "Mike Kemerer effect"! LOL!

I have heard that the Moore's lived for some time in Texas before the move to Jackson, Mn.
Not for sure on this though.

What is the Mark Hall Effect?

Berg would be an outstanding get. We have much bigger needs then those weights. In 2 years we are in trouble at 125 and 133 unless we start true Freshman. It would have been nice if Laux would have stuck around. We definitely need some bodies at 184 and 197 also. I agree that Halloway has a ton of upside but he'll have to step in the lineup next year. He'll need to make some big strides in the next year to be competitive at the D1 level.

Your references to 125/133 are valid, but even though Iowa has never been a big transfer destination, I could see it even though we have no idea about what might be available. See Cortez at PSU!

With the history of the Iowa program in the lower weights... I have no worries about those two possibilities.

Lee will start @ 125 as a true freshman :D. Plenty of guys for 133 Rathbun/Wagner or another true in Mejia/JRent

I think the coaches did an excellent job addressing 125 and 133. Soriano would have been huge. It was have blocked PSU from getting him and would have filled in at 25/33 really nicely.

But after not getting him they landed the 2 best lower weight in-state guys in Rathburn/Wagner. They were able to land these 2 even with Mejia and Renteria already committed. Oh and they are still in the running for Spencer Lee.

So in 2 years you will have Rathburn & Wagner with a year under their belt with the best lower weight coaches & training environment in the country and Mejia, Renteria, and maybe Lee to push or fill in if they are not up to the challenge.

Rathbun and Wagner are tough kids but they have done nothing to date to prove they can be successful in division one or start as Redshirt Freshman(and be successful). Mej are Jrent will be true Freshman at that time. I'm not sure how much growing the two have left in them or where they would like to be in college. I believe jmej's dad could give us some input on that. Jrent seems he may end up at 33 or 141. He wrestled 26 this summer and is now down at 20.

It's hard to predict how good or what weight a kid will be 2 years down the road - especially going from HS to D1, but Rathbun and Wagner are both on track to be 3-timers and Rathbun is top 100 recruit - so there's potential there.

In the last InterMat release, Rathbun was not ranked in the top 100, but Wagner was (in the 90s). My point is just that both are top 100 types

I agree 100%. These are kids that we should get. They may never start but it's more of a wait and see how they develop. State titles don't mean a whole lot on the recruiting front. It's more did you place here, here and here and who have you beat. Wagner is ranked 16th and Rathbun isn't ranked in the top 20. I highly doubt that either were given very much scholly money. I'm not knocking these guys because they are great wrestlers but they aren't top tier. Can they be someday? we'll see...

Renteria was going to cut down to 120 for Fargo, but decided pretty last minute he didn't feel like dropping the extra six pounds and wrestled 126. He will be back in the OPRF lineup at the Clash at 120. Back in September he said the staff thinks he is the perfect size for a 125 and they told him there is no need to focus on getting bigger, just on getting better.

Mejia's plan was to add enough muscle to get to 126 this offseason, but obviously he didn't grow enough to fill the weight (despite his impressive early season showings at 126). He will also be at 120.

I think while we'd love to have Mejia and Renteria grow into 133-141 pounders to make room for Spencer Lee, right now they're all smallish 125-pounders. And short of a transfer, we'll either have two true freshmen at 125-133 in two years or it'll be redhshirt freshmen Wagner and Rathbun, both decent but neither going to help win the Penn State dual. In short, it's not an ideal situation.

As Omahahawk noted, 74, 84, and 97 need some shoring up. As of now we're entirely dependent on Young, Paddock, Wilcke and Holloway to man those three weights--all have talent, but none are on the same level as Hall/Nickal/Snyder/Valencias/Myles Martin at the moment. Expecting 3 of the 4 to become NC caliber is overly optimistic.
