Brody Grothus

We sure can. We'll be more focused on Brody Winning an NCAA title at that point in time than on Marsteller making 157.

Grothus isn't competing for any title at 141 this season. I'll be impressed if he makes it through the season without getting injured or sent to the hospital for dehydration again.

Does anyone have an update on his progress? Is Midlands still the targeted return or sooner?

I think with the new nearfall rules it only helps Brody's chances to be a high AA or hopefully finalist. The kid can ride and beat some guys last year that people are high on making it to the finals... Sorenson being one of them!

who is this brody grothus fella. I've not read anything about him on here before.

A wrestler from Iowa by that name? We should have seen a thread on him before this one, right?

Agreed! Whether or not Brody can or can't make 141 and have a successful season, I don't see how anyone couldn't remain hopeful for him as well as admire his efforts. He's attempting to do something extremely challenging to have a successful senior campaign and help his team. Hard not to have a helluva lot of respect for a guy like Brody.

People are criticizing Marstellar for cutting too much weight but I can't make a similar statement about Grothus, who literally was sent to the hospital last season when trying to cut to 141? I'm not trying to hate on Grothus, but I don't see how he can be competitive at a weight he couldn't make last year. Yes, I know he's been working his way down over a longer period, but I still just can't see it.

And no, I can't call myself a Penn State fan. I was criticizing Gulibon's ranking as soon as I saw it.

Grothus didn't do it right and tried to do it too quickly. He isn't going to hit the mat until Midlands this year because they are doing it the right way.

This isn't the first time Mastellar has gassed this year or last. How many guys have Brands ever put out on the mat that continually gassed like we have seen with Marstellar, Alton, or what's his name from Michigan.

So apples and oranges my anti Iowa fan.

I don't think anybody is extremely confident that he can make it to 141 and be a world beater. You may be correct and he may look like Marstellar (or Slaton) after the cut and gas terribly. We are cautiously optimistic that he could be pretty awesome at 141 IF he is able to make the cut and still be effective though. Big difference. We are cautiously optimistic. You are pretty definitively negative.

Even Smith thinks Marsellar can make 157 and be effective IF he cuts the right way (so I don't think anybody is really definitively writing him off yet either).

Brody will be fine. I'm more concerned about getting back into wrestling shape and staying healthy. He's a fifth year senior who is obviously motivated to put in the time and help the Hawks win a NC.

So you understand that last year he trained to wrestle at 149, then had to try to cut to 141 more quickly than is feasible.

And you understand that this time he's been training to go 141 for nearly a year; almost certainly with constant guidance from trainers and nutritionists.

But you can't see how this year could be different from last year? How is that possible?

First, let me say I strongly admire his dedication and I hope Grothus makes 141, stays healthy and places top 4. In fact, the only wrestler at 141 whom I will be cheering harder for is Heil, and that is mainly due to my arguments with certain PSU fans. With that said, a ton of skepticism is warranted.

1.) His career record at the NCAA Tournament is 1-2.
2.) He hasn't wrestled an NCAA match at 141, EVER.
3.) He had a well documented problem trying to make 141 last year.
4.) He hasn't made 141 yet this year.
5.) When is the last time he wrestled a sanctioned match?
6.) Will he be the same wrestler after so much time and will the size change effect this?
7.) Even if he is the exact same wrestler he was when he was healthy at 149, is that enough to AA?

I know many on here defend against the negativity, and rightly so. This is THE Hawkeye board. But, it isn't like Grothus is a guy with proven success that you could pencil in an AA finish based on his resume. If he manages to AA it will be ALL HEART. My hope is he is able to maintain, and moreso, improve his wrestling while working on his weight. Often times the 2 don't go together and I would hate to see him go through so much to finally get to the weight(healthy) and not get the results you want(damn near deserve) for such a huge sacrifice.

It may very well be a positive experience for him regardless, as being an AA or not isn't the end of the world. Still, it would make it a lot sweeter if he did AA........................................Good Luck Mr. Grothus!

Don't know what Brody has for body fat etc.
Willie posted he was down to 146 last week so doing it slowly thus his stregth should be ok .
After what happen last year I'm sure he has a good nutritionists working with him.
So he has almost 7 weeks till midlands to lose 5 lbs which is really realistic.
How he performs have to just wait and see maybe he will not be able to even win a wrestler off
but I'm a gambler and would put the money on Brody.

So he isnt going to wrestle a live match until Midlands? Is waiting til Midlands at 141 better than wrestling now in opens at 149 while trying to lose weight? I would think getting on the mat would be nice to get some matches in no matter what the weight. Most of these opens have teams from all divisions there, that I would think he would have success against while trying to cut down.

Recovering from injury.
