Caitlin Clark goes woke

Until we stop labeling people by the color of their skin, ethnicity, etc., racism will continue to be an issue in society.

And yes, I used said labels in my post above to sarcastically illustrate a point from the post I quoted.

We need to get to the point where people are people and stop trying to differentiate/judge/label everyone by external characistics that they have no control over. MLK hit it on the head with "content of character, not color of skin."

This is certainly true, but it has proved challenging

THIS! ^

I mean, it's pretty obvious that Caitlin would have less of a gravitational pull if she were Black. It's okay to both acknowledge that AND her incredible talent (Pete Maravich's record...hello). The amount of stardom added by her being white is up for debate, but both the people who claim that she only getting the attention she is because she's white AND the people who claim her being white has zero effect on the level of her stardom are both full of crap.

It is nuanced for sure and although I agree pretty much 100%, I’ll just add this.

Tiger Woods did things to a golf ball no one had ever done and Serena did the same as did MJ really. Or at least they did it in a fashion that had never been done and they all three were almost immediately media sensations.

If CC were black and shot 32 foot bombs five times a game, didn’t stick her butt out when she heaved the shots up like most women and ran up and down the court like the energizer bunny throwing pinpoint passes she would’ve been a star, even if she was green

Agreed.

She can absolutely do that. I also have eyes and can see the people she's lifting up have done nothing but diminish her at every turn. 17% of the tech fouls committed all last season were against Caitlin. Why disgruntle your fanbase to gain favor with current and former players who will never accept you.

Funny thing, and this is a great example for anyone really checked in on life and likes to compare people based on what they watch or read or who they vote for. I would wager you and I share quite a few of the same ideologies.

But I would categorically and with impunity reject any language that would suggest she would “cater” to her fan base. If her fan base is so sensitive and fragile, and maybe a better word would be unstable, that they’re upset about her quotes. In this particular article then she doesn’t need them.

Proving voting for someone or liking someone or “supporting” someone doesn’t make you similar or like minded.

I will give you MJ, but if you don't think the media and endorsement craze over Tiger and Serena had quite a bit to do with their race, I don't know what to tell you. They were minorities who dominated sports that were, and still are mainly white. Their financial success was certainly earned. Pretty much the exact same scenario as Clark in basketball.

The real question here is why does anyone on this board pay attention to or care what happens in the WNBA LOL?
Trash league, trash product. Ill hang up and wait for when CC comes back to coach in some capacity at Iowa.

I think we are missing each other here. You are essentially saying they were a media sensation because of their race in a white dominated sport?! And I have no problem with this, however, it literally proves, excellence is what’s important, your skin color is a side story. They had to be winners 1st.

It also helped that they were all three attractive people… Which quite frankly gets pushed under the rug too much. Pretty people, and big people and exceptional people generally have a lot of gravitational pull.

I’m honestly not clear what your point is?! They were black and were media stars, immediately!

Thanks for your notification. I’ll assume now that we know your position, you’ll not hang out in a WNBA thread, right?

you will not EVER see me posting on the WNBA threads.
I loved Clark at Iowa but could not care less what happens in women's professional basketball. Not sure why anyone would actually...I get it, different strokes for different folks but no thanks. Too many other sports vying for my time.

I do not understand why people being more interested in a star athlete because they share the same race is a problem. That said, I don't know that I would be remotely as interested in Caitlin if she had played for a different school even though she attracted a lot of fans that are not Hawkeye fans. I think if she were black and done the same things for Iowa, I would be just as excited about her. Some people keep throwing around the great white hope label and that simply has nothing to do with my interest in Caitlin.

I 100% would support her and be just as giddy about her if she was black and came from Iowa, however, you do make a good point. I’m not at all sure I would be as excited and giddy if she had not been an Iowa alum, regardless of her ethnicity.

It’s also worth noting being from the state is pretty cool, but if she had come from the state of Ohio and been an Iowa alumni would’ve been immaterial to me. She’s still from Iowa to me.

And honestly, for me, this has precedence… I don’t really have a favorite NFL team per se. I just track where the Iowa kids go.

I think a lot of former and current WNBA players honestly believe they’re as good as Caitlin and in their minds, the easiest explanation for why they don’t get the attention she does is racism. As more people recognize her as a generational talent, and more players realize she’s simply on another level, the racial narrative will fade and everyone will be able to appreciate her as a superbly talented basketball player

I am certainly saying their success was earned by their skills. I am also saying the over the top craze was in part due to their race. All of them. I don't think you see and/or accept the fact that their race had something to do with it.

This is a very good post, and your right the hostility will fade. I really believe you’re correct there..

Now there are a couple things that I will add onto this… I’ve already said I believe it’s fair to point out racial disparities in the league and in life and that we all have different lived experiences. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out for some Black people, not all, the road has been more challenging.

With that said, people are driving their train & high on cocaine just like Kacey Jones if you think she wasn’t treated with contempt and disdain during this last WNBA season. And most of it really was just plain, common pettiness and jealousy, but people most assuredly rationalized the fact that she was white and that she really wasn’t that good.

Hence Chen Carter says something stupid and ignorant like all she does is shoot three pointers.

Now, even the people like Sue Bird and Rebecca Lobo, who I like very much have tried to poo poo that she was treated differently, but we all have eyes to see and ears to hear. I’m not willing to blame it all on race, but they definitely wanted to show her up.

It's ok to just watch someone play basketball and think they're awesome. We don't need an academic review on why.
And at the very core of what she's saying that IS the point. In her way she's telling all her new supporters to follow her because of her play, and not because of her skin color. She has no choice but to comment on this to some degree given the events driven by social media these last two years.

LOL…. OK here… Tall people are a novelty and get a lot of love, blue eyed and green eyed people are somewhat less common and are adored by many, beautiful people are obviously revered and fawned about all over the world. They are unusual and novelties.

You’re suggesting to me that this racist country was Ga Ga over two black athletes who excelled in predominantly white sports and I’m going to say super Duper kind of shows that excellence Trump‘s race animosity regularly.

How does them gaining fandom for being black in a white dominated sport suggest racism. They were loved and adored. I have no doubt your premise is accurate, but that doesn’t fit the narrative of them “not getting ahead” because they were black.

The WNBA has been built on the backs of the NBA. The "pioneers" of the WNBA were all subsidized, which means they were merely placeholders until someone really elevated the game.
Given it's own merits, the WNBA would have floundered long ago.

Why isn't Angel Reese or Aja Wilson expected to comment on Antonio Brown posting fake nude images of her or people making fun of Caitlin's looks saying she looks like a man?

Neither is the face of the game now, and you clearly know that. Clark is a smart woman, and speaks thoughtfully. I'll let her speak for herself. Try listening......

That's insane. Angel Reese is clearly the second most popular player in the league and Wilson is a 3X league MVP and hands down best player in the league. They could've spoke out on the hate Caitlin recieves.
Also I'm not interested in being lectured on privilege. I grew up dirt poor and had nothing as a kid. This is why the left will never perform better in rural areas.

Just what are you smoking? Where did I ever say the "not getting ahead" because they were black comment? Where did I ever say they gained fandom for being black in a white dominated sport would suggest racism? Be very specific. I said it raised the level of attention from the media.

This racist county? You mean the one that elected a black (half) President, twice? The one where you basically can't see a commercial that does not feature a black actor? The one that nearly every bi-racial athlete identifies as being black? It's funny how so many only view racism from a white against black perspective and that blacks cannot possibly be racist. You probably think that because a black (partially) woman was defeated the country has to be racist. Could it be she was just an incompetent bumbling buffoon? But I digress.

There will always be fringe elements, but Tiger and Serena (essentially Tiger only half) being black was not a concern at all for most of the fandom. Which by the way based on percentages is white. Little kids had their posters up in their rooms and you're stuck in the 6-'s thinking everyone is racist if they don't buy into your beliefs. You're kind of attitude is exactly why the Democratic party is bleeding. Just twist a comment or fact to support your own slanted view You brought up politics first by bringing Trump into it, not me.

And finally - LOL to you. Trying to make a point with someone like you is simply a waste of time. And initially, I essentially was agreeing with you. Just adding a bit to it that of course caused the ever so predictable triggering. Be 100% on my side or you're 100% wrong. Keep it up and 2024 will be just the beginning.

Ok…funny thing, nobody on this board that is reasonable has ever had a problem with me and vice versa. I have lots of contemporaries that I have had great conversations with and I know you see then and I know you see the amount of people that have agreed with my points. I didn’t read all of that because quite frankly, this is a simple thing. I’m not sure why you ever engaged me to begin with if there’s anybody confused it is definitively you. I don’t care if you agree with me nor do I need the platitudes.

… Sidebar holy what the living F Batman, I did go back and skim what you had to say. You clearly have misread something I said.

I didn’t interject racism into this discussion. I can’t stand the constant insistence that everyone’s racist. What in the hell is wrong with you?

Could be, along with some other examples above. Although it’s worth noting that people often self-label as woke. My point on snowflake is people often throw it out anytime somebody doesn’t agree with something or say they don’t like it.
It’s a bit more specific than that. The whole point of the term snowflake is that somebody thinks they’re very special while at the same time being extremely fragile when things don't go their way…like a snowflake.

PS….I went back now and really did read it. You truly are high.

I never brought up Trump, I said “trumps” as in beats…

I also used Serena, MJ & Tiger to point out the country isn’t so racist that they won’t go gaga over black athletes. You insisted race into this particular equation are you that incapable of following a thought.

Know something here, you can tell yourself in your head that I need someone to believe me 100%, but you truly don’t know my wife or my life or how little I care about you or a stranger agreeing with anything I have to say, I do care very much about stupidity though And you’ve won the prize today

Meh….there’s more to it than that. The democratic used to be the party of the poor. And quite frankly, being dirt poor isn’t the qualifier for a “bad life”

The underlying implication is that people haven't watched the WNBA because it's mostly black women and they're racist. No, it's because the product has been crappy. The NBA is mostly black men but that didn't hinder its popularity because it's an entertaining product with a lot of great players and personalities. Clark elevated the league because she's a generational (or more) talent who's exciting to watch. Tiger Woods did the same for golf. Jordan did it for the NBA.
Why is it the league only has a huge following when Clark enters, who happens to be white? There have been a handful of players in the past who have been just as good. She gained it for a couple of reasons, 1 is she is talented, 2. she would make passes and shoot shots most cannot do or make 3. she is willing to show emotion 4. In general doesn't piss off too many people 5. There is a bit that its a white player that many whether they will admit it or not have gravitated to because she is white, and its not something most see of a white player have that high level of success in either the W or NBA (couple of players). Its been a phenomenon, similar to Jordan or Tiger and maybe even more similar to Bird. The similarities to Bird are almost symmetric, great 3 shooter, ability to drive, tons of swagger, underrated defender and can take over games, also a white player dominating in a sport dominated by African Americans. Going to a college that wasn't a well known commodity and becoming a star, and leading their teams to the national championship game and losing. Also being rookie of the year. She came up at the right time, with NIL, increased viewership, self marketing through media accounts of an under viewed sport. She took the bull by the horns and created some media created enemies, whether South Carolina, LSU, Angel Reese, Sheryl Swoopes. It all melded into a great storyline. You either cheer for her, cheer for her to get beat, or go to see what amazing thing she will do this next game.

I'll also add lecturing hard working people about their privilege is a good way to get your nose broke.
I'll be sure to wear protection if we speak in the future. Lolol..I also grew up with very little as well, and had to work hard, (many times two jobs) to be in a position to retire soon fairly comfortably. I'd agree I have no issue that when following teams and players during a season I have no interest in all this back and forth, race baiting, or opinion pieces. This should not be about that. This is a young woman named Time magazines athlete of the year. This is for being the most impactful athlete in the WORLD over the last year. A good part of this has ZERO to do with her play ON the court. It goes well beyond her logo three's or assists. Its about her changing the perception of her sport, for both older folks and the next generation. Little girls AND boys, white, and people of color wearing her jerseys, and wanting to be like her. Is it not possible that this remarkably aware young woman was reaching out an olive branch for everyone to consider setting aside these differences, and just enjoy the moment? I just don't see why people would hold this against her. Given the magnitude and gravity of why she won this, would you really expect her to "just shut her mouth" as several posters have stated?

The cards are now on the table. Clark doesn't need you all to defend her against any imaginary enemies. Shut up or move on.

Thanks, although it is a message board. I know you’re not bashful about sharing your opinion. Misguided or not 🤷‍♂️

Well then I’ll add, breaking someone’s nose in 2024 is a good way to end up arrested with a host of legal fins, but hey, who cares right….

I think I’ll also add if “hard-working people“ are so sensitive and for that matter have enough time to engage in assault and the amount of time drain that would go along with it, then maybe they needed lectured after all, just sayin 🤷‍♂️
