April 3, 2023 Update:

End of 2022-2023 Season Update on # games needed to break the NCAA scoring record (30) and Caitlin's new projected career points total (3,662):

Year: Points Scored
2021: 799 (30 games).................26.6 ppg
2022: 863 (32 games)..................27.0 ppg
2023: 1,055 (38 games)...............27.8 ppg
........................................................
2,717 Total Points so far.............27.2 ppg Career Ave (100 Games)
3,527 NCAA Record (Kelsey Plum, University of Washington; 2014-2017; 139 GP; 25.4 ppg)
........................................................
811 Points needed to Break the record

Looks like she needs 30 games to do it
(27 ppg x 30 games = 810)

NOTE: during the 2022-2023 season (38 games) we played 29 reg season games, 3 B1G tourney games, and 6 NCAA tourney games to get to our final 31-7 record. Next season we should expect around 35 games (30 reg season games plus HOPEFULLY AT LEAST 2 B1G tourney games and 3 NCAA tourney games).

New 4 year Points Projection:
2,717 current points
945 projected pts for 2023-2024 (35 games x 27ppg)
..........................................
3,662 Projected Points by end of next season (new NCAA record)

For GOAT Reference:

2,804 Career Points, MEGAN GUSTAFSON (#25 in NCAA History)

...........20.8 ppg, 2015-2019, 135 GP

3,649 Career Points, Lynette Woodard (has the AIAW record, which was pre-NCAA; in 4 years and 139 games played at Kansas from 1978-1981, she was a 4 time All-American and averaged 26.3 points per game; she probably should be considered the all time D1 and D1 equivalent scoring leader).

ORIGINAL POST:

in 2020-2021 Caitlin averaged 26.6 ppg
in 2021-2022 Caitlin averaged 27.0 ppg

in 2022-2023 Caitlin is averaging 27.6 ppg

So, lets conservatively say she averages 26.6 ppg for her entire career.

She now has the CHA record for points in a game. Who had the old record....does anyone know? Luka maybe??

Just got this from the Google machine: Caitlin Clark scored a career-high 44 points, while adding five rebounds and eight assists. Her 44 points broke the record for most points in a game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which was previously held by Amy Herrig who scored 42 vs Northwestern in 1999. Also then found this:

CARVER-HAWKEYE ARENA RECORDS

Individual:
Points 45 by Brian Quinnett, Washington State, 12/5/86

What is the arena record Legend?

The arena record is 45 points by Brian Quinnett of Washington State (1986).

Garza's 41 points on November 27, 2020 vs Southern is the most by a Hawkeye in a game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena; the previous record was 36 by Adam Haluska (2006) and Rob Griffin (2000).

OVERALL: Iowa’s single-game scoring record is 49 points, set by John Johnson in a 1970 game against Northwestern.

Garza and Johnson are the only two Hawkeyes with two 40-point games.

Am sure I was at the game. Loved the 1969-70 Hawks!

Yes Legend12 is very adamant that it is not the arena record. It’s the arena record for an Iowa team.

Can you go back and review the John Johnson game in 1970? I would like to know how many points he would have had, had their been a three point line back then? Maybe 60?

I don't recall John Johnson shooting or scoring from what is now the 3 point range. I do recall him scoring from inside out to maybe the 12 - 15 feet or so area. Just my opinion and old recollection.
JJ was not a long range bomber st all. He scored 20' & in almost exclusively.

Clark just needs to quit shooting from downtown. Percentage is low. Just move closer by 10 feet and then nail the 3. She has all the tools. What a special player.

Pretty, pretty, pretty good for one high school conference to have two of those.

I wonder what the NCAA record is for career average points per game. There are a lot more games being played in each season now.
Looking at the top 25 career points leaders it’s 28.4, Patricia Hoskins of Mississippi Valley State, 1985-89. And she only made 24 career 3’s. Although I guess someone with fewer games could have averaged more not enough games to put them in the top 25 in total points.

Gustafson is #25 in career points.

That is a good point on her freshman season. Normally, a Big Ten Title appearance and Sweet 16 appearance would mean 35-36 games, not 30. That's another 115-150 points she would have gotten.

When I project her career points, should I up 2023 & 2024 to 35 games, instead of 34? That would give her roughly 52 more points.

Caitlin Clark is averaging 30.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 7.7 assists in the Hawkeyes' 6 games against ranked opponents. No other Division I men's or women's player has averaged 30-5-5 against ranked foes (minimum two games) in the last 20 seasons.

She has topped the 650-point, 200-assist, 175-rebound mark through 25 games. She is the only Division I men's or women's player to do that through 25 games since the 1999-2000 season.

And when her career is up?

Ha, you must have gotten your some of your info from the ESPN article about Iowa's game yesterday. I was going to copy and paste some of it.

ESPN is definitely loving Clark this year!
I guess it's a good thing that Bueckers for UConn is hurt and they aren't talking about her all the time, like last year.
I think Bluder sees this as Clark's chance to win player of the year and get Iowa some attention. Hopefully it is paying off on possible recruits.
I could see Clark winning Player of the Year in college basketball, but not winning it in the Big Ten. I would be willing to bet Big Ten player of the year goes to Michigan's senior Hillmon. The Big Ten likes their seniors and Michigan is having their best year ever. Player of the Year in BIG could come down to this Sunday's game - Michigan vs Iowa. Hopefully, Iowa wins their last 2 games and can tie for the BIG title, with ALOT of help win it outright.

I thought Gustafson was the best Iowa woman player ever. So much for that!

I presume that Clark's scoring may drop a little the next couple years with the infusion of some young talented players. She's going to however turn into a triple double machine facilitating.

wouldn't matter unless he had a time machine to move the game to the future home of the hawks ;)

JJ would still have the same # as he rarely, if ever, shot from 20+ feet out. Now Freddy was another story of course.

If the gals make a run in the BTT and NCAA, she can get in more than 34 games a year, so at current rate should break the NCAA record.
Also, on a different note - her picture above where she is dribbling - she has her hand on the side of the ball at chest height. I really hate what the players can get by with carrying the ball no days. Some guys just carry it every dribble but it isn't called anymore.
