The Caitlin Countdown:

Caitlin had 38 points in #3 Iowa's (21-2, 10-1) 93-85 win at Maryland (12-10, 4-7) tonight.

3,462: Current Career Points.

27.2 ppg: The conservative number used in the calculations below. This was her scoring average in her first 100 Games (through her junior season).

Important Dates (based on that conservative 27 ppg scoring average):

Thurs Feb 15 vs Michigan (in Iowa City; game is on Peacock): Caitlin projected to break the NCAA Scoring Record of 3,527 points.

Sun March 3 vs Ohio State (Senior Day): the final regular season game. Will Caitlin participate in Senior Day?

Sun March 3 vs Ohio State (Senior Day): Caitlin is projected to break Lynette Woodard's All Time Scoring Record of 3,649 points.

Milestones, with a projected 12 more games this season:

(1) 66 pts needed to break the NCAA record of 3,527 (Kelsey Plum, University of Washington; 2014-2017; 139 GP; 25.4 ppg).
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 3 more games to do it (27 ppg x 3 games = 81), which would occur on Thurs Feb 15 vs Michigan (in Iowa City; game is on Peacock).

(2) 188 pts needed to break the AIAW record of 3,649 (Lynette Woodard, Kansas University; the AIAW was pre-NCAA; she played from 1978-1981; 139 GP; 26.3 ppg)
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 7 more games to do it (27 ppg x 7 games = 189), which would occur on Sun March 3 in Iowa City vs Ohio State (Senior Day).

(3) On Jan 31, 2024, in a 110-74 win at Northwestern, Caitlin set the Big Ten Career Scoring Record. The previous record was 3,402 points (Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State; 2015-2018; 139 GP; 24.5 ppg).

(4)
On Nov 12, 2023, in a 94-53 win at UNI, Caitlin passed Megan Gustafson's 2,804 to become Iowa's All Time Leading Scorer.

Iowa is now 21-2 with a projected 12 more games to go this season. NOTE: during the 2022-2023 season (38 games) we played 29 reg season games, 3 B1G tourney games, and 6 NCAA tourney games to get to our final 31-7 record. This season we should expect around 35 games (30 reg season games plus HOPEFULLY AT LEAST 2 B1G tourney games and AT LEAST 3 NCAA tourney games).

Caitlin's 4 year Career Points Projection:
2,717 pts to start the 2023-2024 season (100 Games)
945 projected pts for 2023-2024 (35 games x 27 ppg career ave)
..........................................
3,662 Projected Points by end of 2023-2024 season (new NCAA & ALL TIME record)
===================

For GOAT Reference:

2,804 Career Points, Megan Gustafson (#26 in NCAA History)

...........20.8 ppg, 2015-2019, 135 GP

3,649 Career Points, Lynette Woodard (has the AIAW career scoring record; the AIAW was pre-NCAA; the NCAA took over the administration of women's basketball starting with the 1981-82 season; the NCAA, unfortunately, has treated the AIAW, the first era of organized collegiate women's basketball, as if it never happened; in 4 years and 139 games played at Kansas, from 1978-1981, Lynette was a 4 time All-American and averaged 26.3 points per game; she probably should be considered the current all time D1 and D1 equivalent scoring leader).

Fran, you are getting your numbers all wrong! Clark had 38 points (should have been 40), 12 assists and 6 rebounds tonight.

And to think that through her junior year she was averaging "just" 27.2 ppg.

I think she's gonna break the NCAA record one week from now in Lincoln. I think Lisa isn't gonna hold her back (especially if this is her last year as a Hawkeye).

Let it rip, CC!

At the rate she has been scoring in her last 5 games, I expect Clark to break Plum’s record at Nebraska on 2/11.

And she has scored above average in away games- 45,35,38 in her last 3 road games, an average of 39.3ppg. OTOH Clark may get some added rest if the next game vs PSU is a blow out making the NE game less likely.

She needs to drive to the basket when the game is close. She can't be stopped and draws tons of fouls....
Sometimes she tries to get others involved too much?

Getting others involved is critical.

Clark is often drawing multiple defendants when she dribble penetrates. Her passing skills are top notch so getting the ball to a teammate for an easier basket is a no brainer….. they just need to convert at a high percentage She had 12 assists tonight, could have easily been 15 (or more).

Cool article from Northwestern

Excellent article. For those who think that all these records are what drives her, its stories like this that set the record straight. THIS is her impact, as she leads a new generation of players.....
There is a player, Grace Beyer in NAIA, that had more career points than Clark on January 22. She had 3,496 to Clarks 3,351. Miriam Walker, another NAIA player, hd 3,855 career points. I know NAIA is not the same as NCAA, but that is a lot of points no matter what level.
I mentioned this earlier in the week, and your right its still a hell of an accomplishment. It's really not on the same world that Clark plays in. My youngest was a pretty good NAIA player and their team played in the sweet sixteen, and won their conference for the first time in 25 years. There is a lot of talent out there. They had 2 NAIA AA's while he was there, and none of those guys would play on a D1 team, and certainly not in the B1G. On top of tat CC's cred is what she does beyond the scoring. Its How she scores, and how she carries herself. Then of course being the nations assist leader basically the last THREE seasons! She has NO peer, and yes that includes JuJu Watson....

Some people have brought up that Caitlin will likely pass the men's all time leading scorer, Pete Maravich (3,667 career points). Pete scored all of those points in just 3 seasons (83 games played; 44.2 ppg).

Tonight, at Maryland, Caitlin will play her 123rd career game.

When Pete Maravich was in college, (1) freshmen could not play varsity; (2) there was no 3 point line; (3) there was no shot clock.

This is a story from this morning from the Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate:

Maravich family weighs in on Caitlin Clark record chase: 'Two totally different records'

Jaeson Maravich thinks his late father would have been a fan of Caitlin Clark, the Iowa women’s basketball superstar who’s on pace to become the NCAA’s all-time Division I scoring leader.

Some parts of Clark remind him of his father, Pete. Like the LSU legend, she has a flair for the dramatic.

She can torch defenses from well beyond the 3-point arc. She’s flashy and skilled. And with her skinny frame and dark hair, she even looks like she could be his father’s sister, Jaeson told The Advocate on Friday.

Soon, the two may share something else. In more than 50 years, no man or woman has ever eclipsed Maravich’s 3,667 career points. If Clark maintains her current scoring average, that fact will change.

The way that Jaeson perceives his father’s achievements will not.

“I look at my dad's record, and if somebody breaks it, it's almost like two totally different records,” he said, “just because of the circumstances and the rules and everything else. I think they had said if he had played four years, he would have had close to 5,000.

"So, I said this last year: It's kind of like an apple-to-orange comparison. And then if you're talking about the women's record, I mean, to me, that'd be two totally separate records.”

If Clark scores 30.5 points per game across Iowa’s last eight regular-season games, she’ll finish her career with more points than the current leaders on both the men’s and women’s side of the sport — Maravich and Kelsey Plum.

When the Hawkeyes face Maryland on Saturday (7 p.m., Fox), Clark will play her 123rd career game. Maravich, however, set the record in only 83 games across three seasons at the varsity level. Without a shot clock and a 3-point line, he scored an astounding 44.2 ppg. No player will likely ever come close to scoring at a higher rate, which is why Jaeson views the records separately.

The total points record has been challenged before, as recently as last season. Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis fell just three points shy of tying it at the end of the regular season, when he missed a 3-pointer as time expired in the final game of his career.

At the time, Jaeson called Davis’ pursuit of the record “awesome,” but said that his father’s two records — the total and the average — should be thought of separately, especially since Davis played five years of college hoops.

This season, as Clark closes in on the total points record, Jaeson’s reiterating that argument while striking an additional distinction between the men’s side of the game and women’s.

“I got a chance to see (Clark) play for the first time last year, and she's incredible,” Jaeson said. “She's great for the sport, for women's basketball, and I think she's going to be a great pro. She's very fun to watch, and I love the way she plays. So, I'm not surprised that she's on the verge of breaking the all-time scoring record for women.”

If Clark keeps scoring at the same clip, she’ll pass Plum on Feb. 15 when Iowa hosts Michigan. Then, she’ll eclipse Maravich four games later, when the Hawkeyes wrap up their regular season on March 3 at home against Ohio State.

“But I mean, if she ends up breaking my dad's record, kudos to her,” Jaeson said. “But I always look at it as two totally different records just because there were so many disadvantages as far as what my dad dealt with as opposed to today.”

All 100% true. For every reason given.

Regarding the NAIA, I'm assuming that someone of Clark's talent could have averaged 50 points per game back then. The overall talent in women's basketball in 2024 has to be an order of magnitude higher than 1978.
Grace Beyer is actually a senior right now for the NAIA school she plays for.

Beyer. And yes, I referenced the article. There's also light years difference between plying NAIA, (their average attendance for her games is 58 people) and playing D1 ball at the highest level. Clark is playing against future pros every night. Grace BERGER played for Indiana and COULD be a team mate of Clarks if she goes pro, and the Fever take her with the 1st pick.....

With all the hoopla about those stupid remarks from Swoopes, I still think this is CC's last year so there won't be the discussion of circumstances.

But it's a guarantee that the scoring record would never be touched if she does use the Covid year.

67 tonight would take care of at least 3 more records!

...and my nerves can relax a bit. Until post season anyway lol.... :)

If not for Caitlin's covid shortened first 2 seasons, she'd already have the all time scoring record.

I count 9 games lost in Caitlin's first 2 years. We're talking roughly 243 points that could be added to her current total (27 ppg x 9 games).

(1) 6 games lost in 2020-2021

Caitlin lost at least 6 games (and around 162 points) due to covid during the 2020-2021 season.

How I got to 162 points:

Iowa ended up playing just 23 regular season games in 2020-2021. This season we are playing 30 regular season games. So that's 6 or 7 regular season games that were lost due to covid (some reg seasons are just 29 games, not 30).

Therefore, Caitlin's lost points due to covid is 27 ppg x 6 games lost = 162.

Some other notes:

* The Iowa women's first game of the 2020-2021 season was not until Nov 25, 2020.

* Iowa only played 4 nonconference games (they were only allowed up to 5 nonconference games).

* The game at Rutgers was postponed and never made up.

* In the end, Iowa (20-10) only played 30 games that season.

4 Nonconf
(UNI, Drake, Iowa St, W. Ill)
19 Reg Season (of the orig 20) Conf Games
4 B1G Tournament Games
3 NCAA Tournament games

Here was their 2020-2021 schedule & results (note the postponements & rescheduling due to covid):

Here's CC's numbers her first 3 years:

Year: Points Scored
2021: 799 (30 games).................26.6 ppg
2022: 863 (32 games)..................27.0 ppg
2023: 1,055 (38 games)...............27.8 ppg

Here's a couple good stories regarding that season:

* Iowa WBB announced its 2020-21 WBB schedule just 2 days before the season was officially slated to begin. Iowa was scheduled to play 20 conference games and 4 non-conference games in 2020-21.

* Each school was supposed to play a 20-game Big Ten schedule (adding 2 conference games from the previous two years), and could play up to 5 non-conference games.

(2) 3 games lost in 2021-2022

Here was their 2021-2022 schedule. What a mess! 3 games got canceled but there were several games that got postponed and eventually played later.

2021-2022 Games Canceled due to Covid:
Nov 21, 2021 vs Drake
Nov 25, 2021 vs Seton Hall (Cancun Challenge)
Nov 26, 2021 vs USC (Cancun Challenge)

Kind of interesting to include that she likely will pass the men’s scoring leader, pistol Pete’s record at 3667

Interestingly, with all those Big Ten and national records close to being surpassed, Clark hasn't broken Gustafson's Iowa record of points in a single game yet, 48 points.

She really tried to break it tonight.

Just needed one more assist.

Kind of interesting to include that she likely will pass the men’s scoring leader, pistol Pete’s record at 3667

Yeah, he is now being brought up in most TV broadcasts.

His record just seems different (besides being the men's all time scorer). He wasn't allowed to play his freshman year. There was no 3 point line or shot clock (to increase possessions). Nevertheless, in just 83 games, he scored 3,667 points (44.2 ppg average).

This is a recent story from the Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate:

Maravich family weighs in on Caitlin Clark record chase: 'Two totally different records'

Over her career, Caitlin Clark has averaged 34.8 ppg against BOTH Nebraska and Michigan.

She needs, of course, 39 pts to break the NCAA record of 3,527 (Kelsey Plum, University of Washington; 2014-2017; 139 GP; 25.4 ppg).

Interesting that Oklahoma was a recurring opponent of Kelsey Plum during her college career. Oklahoma is in Big 12 and Kelsey Plum played for Washington, which is in Pac 12. Maybe they had a home-and-home series?

Will CC score 39 on Sunday vs Nebraska?

On Jan 27 Caitlin put up 38 points in Iowa's 92-73 win.
