Can the Freshman QB throw?

Yes...let's get a QB controversy going! That's just what we need when we're 6-1. If the players are comfortable with the guy leading the offense, best to keep him in. The box should get loaded up the next few weeks, the QB will be forced to make some plays with receivers 1 on 1.

You need another bud lite.
edit: meant for loony
From what I've seen, you couldn't even handle a light daquri. Bud Lite is too hard for you fella. But hey it's cheap, so I'm sure your stocked. Just water it down, know your limits.

What do you think Wisconsin did? And we ran the ball anyway, effective enough. As much as Wisconsin committed to the run play action was available at any time as well as boots. But we didn't have to use them because Wisconsin never took the lead. We should all applaud because this is the most cohesive our OL has looked since the bowl game against USC.

The controversy is that we have seen Hill be so bad that we refused to throw the entire 4th quarter. Our wrs have less catches and yards than the service academies (no hyperbole). What happened today is not sustainable.

Hill came in because of the QB whisperer coach. He was 3rd team at Wisconsin. Labas was 3rd team here and loyal enough to stick around. Labas beat a depleted Kentucky team doing exactly what we did today. We have never seen him open it up and he would be more mobile than Hill. I'm not sure why Labas gets zero consideration??

Because unfortunately Labas can't read a defense or a coverage to save his life.

And who is he going to throw to? As bad as Deacon has been, he's still missing TEs 1-3, the top 2 of which were realistically our best receiving threats.

You think putting Labas out there is gonna upset the linemen or defense? I don’t think the run game was gelling because hill is a nice guy that is trying his best. Kirk and company made some good decisions to use counters and guard pulling runs. That will only work better if you have a passing threat.

Yes? Just as it's his job to learn it.

So, they go with the QB that gives them the best chance to win right now, which is Hill.

It's not like Iowa didn't know what they had. Few teams plan on their starting QB getting hurt.
So what is best? A statue who can read a defense, but can't hit the ocean if he threw from a boat, or someone who can make plays with his feet and throw the ball, but struggles to read a defense? Again, that's a straight indictment on this staff's QB coaching and development if JL can't read a defense after three years. You can easily dumb down a playbook. You can't make someone throw.

If these offensive coaches didn't have a plan B at QB, then that is further proof they're in over their heads.

How do we know that, though? He never gets to play? Maybe you have inside info we don't but he's at least mobile.

Either way, that's got to be something that a real QB coach can work on. I have been feeling recently that one of the many reasons we struggle so bad is the rigid nature of the offense. X, Y and Z have to be executed perfectly in order for Iowa to have a good play. We don't do anything off script. We don't ever see teams have breakdowns in coverage (partly because we can't protect that long).

The QBs that have been really successful under KF have been mobile, playmakers (minus Stanley) and have had an offensive line that can block. We are really missing that.

Where are we getting the idea that Joey can "make plays with his feet"? He has 4 career carries for a whopping 11 yards. It's the same mislabeling that happened when Padilla was considered "mobile".

And his mobility doesn't mean anything if he can't operate the offense. You can't make someone just "get" reads and coverages thru sheer will, and that's the part that's more important for an Iowa QB, whether or not we like it.

Because he throws a shitload of picks in practice whenever he doesn't have a card to read and tell him exactly what to do.

If Labas isn't serviceable at this point, that's an indictment on this staff for recruiting and failing to develop him.

There's an understandable risk aversion with play calling with an inexperienced guy, and then there's literally NOT throwing at all for multiple possessions in a row despite not achieving a first down on the ground. The latter is completely unacceptable at this level.

How many teams do you know of with a "serviceable" #3 QB?

Some guys don't pan out. It happens.

Let's not pretend they were running it to completely avoid throwing. They ran for 200 yards today. They were running it because running it was working.

The bigger question is can a true freshman TE step in and play, or one of the walk ons who have been with the team for a few years help out?

IDK, my eyes at Spring practice/games. Listening to his teammates interviews. I'm not saying he's Mike Vick, but he can extend plays and is way more mobile which is something Hill can't do and isn't. Again, Hill has logged 30% and 22% completion percentages so far. I would contend Labas wouldn't be worse than that. But as long as we're talking rushing stats Hill has 9 carries for -53 yards. As an OC and QB coach you can certainly call plays with easier reads to put your guy in a better position for success. Something Belichick has done in NE. Don't lose the game, maintain. But, again, what's the upside?

You think the box wasn’t already loaded the last two games?

Hill is a character guy. And he doesn’t have a lot of weapons. But he hasn’t done anything to prove himself. He’s off Target consistently and when he has the gun slinger itch to throw deep, none of these throws have been close and been covered by both safety and corner. I would be fine splitting series as they’ve done before. But also would be good just giving labas another run.

Great win. Stand up job by defense/special teams and the running unit.
