I think the quality of the team is what keeps people away. We did ok then Lute coached, when Raveling was there, and Davis. Have not have many teams be sitting at 23 or 24 and 3 or 4 when the tourney starts. Teams like that would fill up Carver.
1st off, 24-3 or 24-4 (.888 or .857) going into the post season is a ridiculous expectation. Iowa has had exactly one team reach that expectation going back to Lute, which was 1986-87 (Dr Tom). That team lost to UNLV in the Elite Eight. Raveling never had team with a better .660 win percentage.
Three of the last five seasons have been better win percentage wise than Ravelin’s best year.
Iowa has lost less than 6 B1G games in a season twice in the last 43 years (2005-06 & 86-87). 2006 was a 16 game schedule and 87 was an 18 game schedule as opposed to a 20 game schedule now.
In the last 45 seasons, Iowa has lost 6 or less games in the B1G nine times. Three of those nine have come in the last 10 years.
Second point would be that today’s CBB is completely different from when Dr Tom left 25 seasons ago and it’s almost unrecognizable from when Lute arrived 50 years ago. Transfer portal, NIL, conference alignment, TV deals, schedules (pre season tournaments), The NCAA Tournament has changed about five or six times since then….. comparing today’s game with Lute, Raveling, or even Dr Tom is an apples to oranges comparison, at best.
