Championship Finals Thread

Did I say he would? I simply think he can make an impact
No, I didn't say you did. But, if Marinelli this year is more better than Martin last year, then Ryan did a heck of a development job developing Martin into a National Champion.

Myles Martin pre tOSU.
Prior to Ohio State - Ranked No. 1 in the country by multiple outlets at 182-pounds … No. 3 recruit nationally by FloWrestling … Baltimore Sun All-Metro Wrestler of the Year … a four-time national prep finalist and junior national freestyle champion … went 46-1 as a junior with 25 pins … career record of 171-15 ... won 92 matches for his final two high school seasons … Placed first at the 2014 National Preps … two-time Beast of the East champ … three-time MIAA state champion and Maryland Independent Schools State Tournament champ … led McDonough to a triple crown in 2014: the MIAA's A Conference dual meet title, tournament title and the MIS wrestling tournament team title.

I would love Tom Ryan to come back home. I think the Brands style has run its course unfortunately. Tom Ryan would be a nice change.

Looks like a pretty equivalent resume. The point was that no one was picking him to do what he just did. Me included

Not that anyone gives a crap about a 4th place trophy but how would they handle the 3 way tie for 3rd place had we not lost the team point deduction in the Brooks match? Still tied for 3rd sounds a lot better than 5th place.

To whom?

I think Brands is a very good coach but I do feel he needs to seriously evaluate what he is doing because he is losing ground. I think he has gotten a hint with the recruiting but a lot more is needed there still. We were slow footed and plodding at all but 125 and 133, out two best weights. Our leg defense is poor. Our shot diversity is poor, both the types of shots and that most all shots have to come from a tie. We are not good on bottom and our main top move is the posting the knee by the head thing that only works in HS or vs severely outmatched people. I see all kinds of technique and scrambling ability from other teams I rarely to never see one of our guys do. Like Burroughs said, evolve or die. There are aspects of this program that are not keeping up with others. It is the same types of shortfalls over and over. He needs to figure it out because scoring 80 points a year won't cut it and more finishes outside the top 3 are on the way. Besides that are we happy just being top 3? We are not in the discussion for #1 right now, it is a fact

I will say I'd love to see what we could do with the same number of top ten overall guys some of these other teams have, it might make all the other issues seem much less or go away.

These heavies remind me of Lou Banach. Loved that kind of activity with the bigs. Just be careful with that big turd from Oklahoma!

Gwiz with the early advantage, but I've also seen him fade the slightest bit at the end of matches before. I've never seen Snyder fade

Ok earlier some where giving Burak some shit about no offense. How much offense did you see in the finals of 197. Yes I want more but you have to give the other guy some credit also. Would any of you so smart fans bet money that Penn State would lose 3 of there 5 finals and it would be Nolf,Nickal and McItnosh. Hats off to all the wrestlers they gave us a great show and yes our Hawks have lots of work to do and by gosh they are gonna do it just keep the faith. NGU

He'll have to take consolation in helping his team to three team titles. But I'm sure it's a bitter pill to not get the individual.
Ringer winning his 3rd with no problem and thanks to Synder he will win the Hodge also.

This board kind of embarrasses me tonight. Yea Mega has always been more of counter/stalling wrestler over his 6 year career but he is a 3 time finalist so he is no chump. He got up early and that affords you to be able to run a bit late in the match.

We flat out got out hustled all around today in general. This steroid talk a bout penn state is rediculous. Penn state should be respected by Iowa fans for just what they are doing. For the most part their kids wrestle incredibly hard and try to score points just like we wish our guys would. Yes a lot of their fans a Johnny come latelys but their wrestling team is flat out incredible and I admit, I'm pretty jealous of what they have going on. Mostly because I really don't see any change to their dominance over us ending any time soon. I can see us as hawk fans complaining about our own guys' performances but wrestling fans should appreciate what they are doing right now. At least they wrestle the right way and it isn't OK St's crap style dominating the sport.

I love my hawks and am very frustrated right now but I do respect penn state's accomplishments as a wrestling fan.
i guess ok state's needs to pick up the hard nose tuff iowa style. you guys did place 5th so with that showing the cowboys need to make a quick change into the point scoring machines the hawks are...

#1 overall recruit Mcintosh finishes with no title.
I Think they said he ended up with 115 career wins or something like that. Every time I've seen him interviewed he comes across as A very smart, down to Earth, humble and likable kid. Too bad he didn't get a title during his career.

The Penn State steroids thing has me really scratching my head. I came in and read this post late, but I wanted to chime in simply because I observed earlier this year how remarkable their studs were earlier this season once with such un muscular bodies. So by weight:

125: Megaludis, is he on?
Answer: No. Mega is very limber, flexible. Not on steroids.

133: Conaway? No, not even a question.

141: Guilibon? See Conoway.

149: Zain?
Answer: Doubtfull. If so, maybe low dose/cycles of low milligram testosterone or something but highly doubt. He has muscle mass, but he's not carrying excess water weight, or have water retention in areas where you sure fire know someone 'is on'.

157: Nolf?
Answer: He** no. I've been amazed by his ability to snap his opponents with a physique that comes nowhere near to corroborate his mat strength. Little muscle mass, little definition. No.

165: Rasheed? No. Morello possible. Performance enhancing? Irrelevant.

174: Bo Nickal
Answer: My inspiration to this thread. Has one of the more curious builds of a dominant wrestler I've ever scene. He literally doesn't have tricep definition when leaning over to rest hands on his knees. Looks like he'd be swallowed up by 185 on the bar.

184: McCutcheon
Answer: nothing stands out to me.

197: McIntosh
Answer: Ding Ding! We have a winner. Without question, IMO of course, McIntosh juiced in his redshirt season when he put on what 25 pounds? He has both the vascularity and water retention areas that for someone who knows what to look for, you know trust me. ( My roommate in my early 20's took 2nd Mr Ohio twice, I'm familiar on the subject).

HWY:
Nevills? Needs to find the weight room asap.

Conclusion? PSU has 1 guy who I would widely suspect, hardly enough to label a team issue. This is coming from an OSU fan who I can think of 4 I'd suspect. Still an individual choice, nothing cultural to accuse within a program. Just my opinion again of course.

Iowa opponents takedown count 9: Iowa 0; and yes, each of Iowa's opponents stalled throughout the match.

Trust me, brother...I don't like it any more than you do. And I'm thinking we'll be working on that part of our game in the off-season...at least I fricking hope so!! I'm also hopeful that a couple of these studs we've recruited and another year of prep for Gilman, Clark, Sorenson Stoll, Brooks and Meyer will get us back on top of the wrestling world...

I'm with you! I'm definitely not a PSU fan - far from it - but McIntosh seems like a really classy kid, and like you, I was hoping he would win one. Like Zain is to BS, Cox was to McIntosh...

I'm with you, except for WRT McIntosh. I don't think any of them are on anything...at least nothing illegal. McIntosh might be hitting the creatine pretty hard, but I don't think he's taking any illegal PE drugs. And like you, I know a lot of people who are taking steroids (legal and otherwise), so like you, I know the "look." I'm confident Mac's clean.

guys at PSU go up in weight and look much bigger, come in looking weak with little muscle tone and leave looking like animals covered in acne.

I'm not buying this kind of crap. People who are posting this nonsense make us all look like a bunch of sorry loser whiny bitches. The PSU wrestling program isn't the USSR and Eastern European Olympic teams of the Cold War era. They are college kids, only one of whom completely dominated the competition. What Zain did this year is no different than what IMAR did last year and Taylor did before him and Steiber and Cael and T&T and on and on. Those of you (and I have no idea who introduced this topic), who come up with lame ass crap like this need to more gracious in defeat. Where's the class?

Give it up, the other guy is the ignore champion for the night.

True, but a three-time AA, going 7th, 3rd, and 2nd his last three seasons. Not bad. J'den Cox is a freak and was just a little bit better in the recent NCAA finals match. Mac was also a big part of four NCAA championship teams in his 5 years at PSU.

Also, many (myself included) consider that Macintosh was wrestling up from his ideal weight class. However, with Quentin Wright and then Ed Ruth at 184, and then no one at 197 after his RS year, Mac was needed up at 197. IMO, for his best personal results, Mac would haven taken an immediate RS and gone 4 years at 184. But the lineup didn't work out that way.

Then Ryan developed this kid into a national champ. Marinelli not winning national championship next year.
He got shit lucky in that his draw emptied out after the first round, and then Bo slipped on an ankle pick, and lost his grip on a throw. After that he ran in the third, which was understandable, but hardly the most impressive champion last night. He's excellent and he had a great tournament, but he is 1-3 against Nickal, and Nickal wasn't the only one who beat him last year.

Tell the truth....you hate Cowboy style because of the scoreboard. Derringer has dominated for 3 years. Why risk losing his 3rd title?

Wrong. If I was simply watching the scoreboard, I LOVE his Cowboy style: He failed to get bonus in his final three matches in the tournament and was one of the 3 or 4 most dominant wrestlers. He cost his team probably 8 bonus points by playing it safe and getting his hand raised winning 3 and 4 point matches.

Maybe I missed it but did anybody see McIntosh even consider taking a shot in his match?

Did ANYONE consider trying to shoot at that freak of humanity? Did you SEE that dude? He looked like god damn Ray Lewis out there, looked like he went about 240 pounds.
