That's a pretty weak attempt to argue against a straw man.

Longevity or frequency of posting on this board is completely irrelevant. Longevity as fan is completely irrelevant. It doesn't take a lot of time or a lot of posts on this board to have a clue about Iowa wrestling, nor does it take much time or experience to be respectful of our wrestlers or realistic in your expectations. I strongly suspect you know the answer to your own question but are reluctant to acknowledge it.

I do acknowledge the fact that we aren't as good as we used to be. I acknowledge the fact that we don't score near the wrestleback team points that we used to get, I acknowledge the fact that we probably won't be on the stand as a team in the next two or three seasons...

Interesting that you consider yourself a "straw man" when in fact it's just a fallacy of your own dreaming. Perhaps an Aunt Sally is in order?

Every year, like clockwork, these idiots come out of the woodwork. So called "fans" that only show up to bitch and moan... It's like they can't wait us to have a bad result. How pathetic must their lives be??
Every year I think they must be preteens that will grow out of it. It's sad to say but I think they might actually be grown men. I think they need professional help for their emotional instability. Maybe they could tweeter that Texas guy wrestling in the girls division for some advice on handling their emotions.

With all due respect, this is a problem that affects countless Iowa fans. Even if subconsciously, Iowa fans have a tendency to judge our guys compared to the Gable era. I'm not saying our standards should be lowered -- just that we need to be realistic about the current landscape of college wrestling and appraise our results based on reality rather than unrealistic expectations. We also need to view current performance in light of incoming talent and recognize that this Iowa team is going to be spitting vinegar, loaded with talent, and itching to get back on top of the heap in a couple of years.
I can honestly say I didn't think the blow up would be this bad when everyone should have known we were big time underdogs going into Big Tens. We had as many finalists as Penn State. Compare the recruits Cael had to ours and think about the recruits we have coming in. It takes a sad soul to not find positives in the performances of Clark, Gman, Kem and Brooks, and the great recruiting uptick.

Wow this board is sadly full of PC, everything is always rosy, if you have a negative take your not a true fan, spineless soft do-gooders. Are these boards for positive posts only? I call it like I see it. I can be positive or negative. It just depends on the situation. Why are people always afraid w/ a different opinion than their own? I'll go w/ my opinions and I'm completely fine w/ it. If you don't like it ignore me already as I have done to a bunch of so called Hawk fans. I and many other on these forums can't stand pc fans always looking at things w/ the wrestling program as if everything is always ok. Seriously?? You PC types are whats wrong with this country today.

So only longtime posters should post on this board? And if you just read the board often and don't post then your opinion isn't of any value to the long timers? Ahhhh, now I get it.

Seems the fact that I've been watching and rooting for the Hawkeyes since the mid 1970's doesn't mean I know a thing about wrestling, or my opinion is just totally worthless. Wish I could claim I wrestled in college, but I didn't, only high school level

Seem to recall Hawkeye wrestlers constantly wrestling above their seed back then, and the ones that got upset early would bust their asses in the wrestlebacks. Doesn't seem like that's happening quite as often currently. I'm frustrated too, but the fact that I don't post here very often doesn't coincide with my wrestling knowledge in any way, shape or form

I am going to address both of you since you are kind of coming from the same place.

Once again though, folks like you who come in during the down times pretend that you are the only ones who "get it." I have this argument with another guy (DHM47) on the board every few months. (As an aside to DHM...these two guys are what I was talking about in my posts with you. At least you are always in here though instead of these dudes who show up during the post season.)

Truth is Deputy and MadMax, you are not on here telling us anything we don't already know. We are just sick of hearing the Captain Obvious stuff because these discussions have been had time and time again. Many of us would be calling for TnT's head except for the fact that they have a ton of good talent coming in and it looks like they have changed their philosophy. Like WDM said, it's not P.C. (if you knew me, we'd get chuckles out of that one) to show some respect to the wrestlers themselves. They are doing the best with the talent they possess. Sorensen is a 30ish recruit who placed 5th his freshman year, and 2nd his sophomore year. He's lost to two guys that were ranked below him coming out of high school. If I were to ask you how many on this board predicted an Iowa national championship at the beginning of the season, you probably couldn't tell me. The answer is...maybe a one or two. I predicted a fourth place finish with maybe two champs. Is that a rosy prediction?

In Gable's years, there were very few elite guys outside of their own state. Many of them would go to their various colleges and sink or swim based on their college coaches and programs. You could take a project and mold them into a title winner or high AA by the time they left. It's not that way anymore. Because of the clubs and kids foregoing all sports except wrestling by the time they are in junior high, elite kids are coming out ready to compete right now. PSU has had Nico, A. Alton, Retherford, Suriano and Hall all come in and wrestle right away in the past six years. The only one who hasn't AA'd will be Alton (unless Suriano can't go...but he would/will if he is healthy enough). Gable wrestled true freshman maybe four or five times his whole career? We are getting kids that not only have had national success, but international as well. So much more development going on now then back in the day.

My point? Many of these kids are way more talented as a whole than in Gable's years and we weren't getting our share of them based on old paradigms and a shifting landscape. So keep on posting with a serious case of the ass all you want or you can understand that we lost money in the market but have made the necessary investments to get the company back on top in a few years. Or you could fire the CEO, his staff and those investments will go away.

By rising, do you mean losing the second match his freshman year at the NCAA tourney and winning five matches to get to the 3/4th place match? Or was it getting to the finals last year?

I get that people are frustrated but help is on the way in the form of Marinelli, Young, Spencer Lee, Gavin Teasdale, Jacob Warner, Max Murin and maybe a few more. 125-174 and 197, HWY is going to be stout with top 1-30 ranked kids...something we have not had at Iowa in the Brands years...even when they won three in a row. You can't expect the coaches to get water from a rock all the time...sometimes a rock is just a rock.

Teams are not going to lay down for us because we have Iowa on the front of our singlet. Nothing is going to be given...But I am happy I am going to be in Iowa City to see us take it back.

Hope you don't mind but I am going to use that "water from a rock" line. It's a good one.

Madmax...Noticed you didn't attack the content of the post which contained facts and wrestling talk, just went personal. You seem like an emotional guy for all the P.C. talk you put out there...easily offended when someone counters you. Any opinion you don't like, you put folks on ignore. So press on with me as well.

i know but i want iowa to be good so i can where hawkeye sweatshirt and feel so cool. like the old days.

madmax: Interesting that the only times you choose to grace us with your presence is after something negative happens. The board is much better off without you. The mods on here probably agree, but you will just make up a new name. You will be easy to spot though. You might not want to watch nationals because we aren't expected to win. Just trying to save you from more emotional outbursts.

It was put here so madmax could go all pottymouth on everyone. Now we know who he is..........
I was being sarcastic. It was like getting lost in the internet as I browsed, so much new information.

Is there a reveal thread moment like Spooner/Rdeitz that I missed on the Madman reveal? Was it Jrob? or one of PDowney crowd?

Gobblin, I just put a "like" on this post - and then I worried that I might have already liked it, so I may have inadvertently "unliked" it. So just to make sure, I want to tell you I "like" your post even more today than Sunday.

The funny part of this thread ends up being a Nascar reference. I used that same sport in a different thread. I wonder if Brands and Company are Nascar fans?

I'm pretty sure if you could add a, "Death Race 2000," element to the sport, TnT would get on board.

Or a wrestling match going on inside the cars during a race, all piloted by competitive twins, only one of which could be credited with the win….

No SPOONER/RDietz moment. Just meant that he has revealed his personality by his posts.

Too bad, that is always a forum highlight. Remember susieshagwell? on themat.com. I wonder if that he/she has a username here? He/she was an Iowa hater bigtime.

But, susieshagwell was very entertaining from my perspective. If you are here as a "lurker" or poster, please resurface and begin again.

You have to admit he/she susieshagwell was good fun as far internet trolls go. I don't remember it getting too out of hand, profanity or personal attacks until the very end where he/she was basically outed and maybe crossed a line with a moderator. The news of a susieshagwell return or reveal would add to our entertainment.

Probably wishful thinking regarding susieshagwell, or maybe he/she is simply spending all his/her time adding new features to the BWI/pen state webpage.
