CJF

Did anyone watch him play in high school? I did. I went to the KY State Championship and watched him play three games as I was visiting my wife’s family in Lexington. CJ is a complete stud. He played on a super high level team and dominated the games I watched. Google CJ Fredrick Kentucky State Highlights. The talk at Rupp Arena was he might of had the finest performance in the history of the State Tourney. I also was in Cincinnati on business and went to watch CJ play Moeller High School. Moeller USA Today Nationally ranked with Texas Jaxson Hayes. The Game was the most intense high school game I have witnessed and CJ dominated. These environments were nothing like we are used to in Iowa.

After watching his videos his shooting release is eerily similar to that of the great Chris Kingsbury who happened to play ball right up the road from Covington.

Baer was clearly the MVP of the team but was only 6th on the team in minutes and scoring. He should have been starting ahead of Cook or Moss, obviously.
Amazing that his 6 points a game will be missed more than their 24 points a game now.

Might want to check out the plus/minus thread or other advanced stats. Also, start watching what guys are doing when they don't have the ball. Hint: Baer was seldom standing flat footed.

Yep scoring averages are all that you should ever judge a player by.

Maybe these high level power five coaches are stupid and all our brilliant armchair experts are better evaluators of talent than these professionals.
Or maybe they are more objective and believe that Moss can be a valuable contributor for their programs next season. Evidently we have a star frosh ready to replace him in CJ. No problem.
Or maybe these high level college coaches have not watched every game Moss has played for several years, and as such only see the good and not the bad.

I think Baer’s strong metrics support the way Fran used him. He may not have been the best overall player, but if each player had a role, Baer was the best at his... if that makes sense.

There may be a case for him being MVP

Baer was a great ball player and even better guy. He will be missed on the team. Gave a lot of passion and came up with serious clutch 3's. But to say he was mvp is a little wacky.

I think the coaches squeezed as much potential out of Baer as was humanly possible. Great shooter, good defender, but he couldn't do a lot with the ball in his hands. He didn't need to start and probably played an appropriate amount of minutes. He was your perfect 6th-man. Spiritual MVP, probably. Actual MVP, probably not.

Can flat out play. After watching the games at Rupp Arena I followed his team mates where they are going to college. The forward on CJ team will be the starting QB at Miami of Ohio and the other forward is the number one rated tight end in America going to ND. The center went to Xavier for ball. Hope the QB struggles against the Hawks this September!

The Center was going to go to Xavier for b-ball. He instead is looking at prison time for sexual assault.

No doubt Garza gives his all. A significant amount of it on the D end is wasted as it is not well directed, late and results in errors that benefit the opponent.

Baer is a guy with limited athletic ability who succeeded in large part by giving highly efficient effort.

OK, so Baer gives more efficient effort? Maybe so. I was responding to the post that stated:

"Baer gave more effort than anyone else on the team, that's not even debatable"

A
gain, this is just not a true or fair statement Garza has arguably the least athletic ability on the team, far less than Baer, so his consistent effort is paramount to his strong output IMO.

The Baer did consistently play harder than the other guys. Superb example of effort plus BBIQ and instincts. Underrated athlete-victimized by the silly notion that white kids are inferior athletes and his all elbows and knees kind of movement (not Walt Frazier smooth).

However, its not to say the other kids didn't play hard just that no one played harder than the Baer. Luka and TC both played hard, not necessarily smart but certainly not lazy. Moss played hard when his shot was dropping.

we'll have to agree to disagree when it comes to EFFORT. I would say no one played harder than Garza. Baer gives great effort too, but also plays a different position so some of his results are more visible like steals, moving around screens and three point shots. Garza has to do a lot of dirty work down low, and is effective largely through a combination of effort and technique, he has very little athletic ability. He also did not benefit as much as he should have from down low as TC was trying to convert himself into a shooting guard. Baer has natural athletic ability when it comes to blocking shots and steals, as where Garza really has no athletic advantages, especially on defense, where his lack of footwork hurts him significantly. Also, we are not discussing playing smart, Baer is about as good as it gets there. Garza also good on the BBIQ front, but not quite to Baer level.

Agree, that Baer's main advantage was his ability to see the court and instantly assess what play needed to be made. He didn't always have the ability to make the play, but his BB IQ was higher than the others on the team. I think Joe W also has very good BB instincts.

I agree that no one plays harder or cares more about winning than Luka. He just needs to play a lot smarter on defense, because his slow feet will keep him from ever being more than a solid position defender and rebounder on that end. Kriener and Joe W also play hard. Not sure that TC and Moss always played hard, all of the time. I wouldn't say they were lazy, but they both spent a lot of time standing and watching, Moss mostly on offense and Cook mostly on defense.

This is exactly correct.....this is a big big deal that almost everyone takes for granted because the Iowa basketball program has been doing a great job at citizenship. Fran deserves a ton of credit for this.[/QUOTE

Couldn’t agree more! Seems like every week you see the kids on twitter doing community work! All you ever hear about is how polite and kind the boys are around campus.

Jok and Josh O are the only 2 that have been arrested during their careers, right?

McCabe was after his senior year.

So 2 guys in almost 10 years is pretty damn good.
That is awesome. I've been in handcuffs more than that in the last month:p
