Cleveland could yield Gable's record falling to Cael.

I was there for 1997 record and all its awesomeness. I remember the tremendous Friday we had, and hadn't really felt anything like it until yesterday. They are truly within striking distance, and I would dare say the odds are better they do break it than not.

What was amazing about '97 was that we were NOT favored to win. I don't believe Cael will ever ever be as good of a coach as Gable was, nor develop wrestlers to such a higher caliber than what they started out as Gable. But I do believe he is going to break records.

Anyway, I am a fan of wrestling and off to Cleveland I will go. Could be history.

More points available now as well. 8th used to be 1 and 7th 2 points unless my memory is completely gone. So an extra 4 possible points per weight. But that 96 team was really fun to watch and be around.

The way Carl's doing it with his never ending roster of elite of the elite recruits degrades the accomplishments by a lot for me.
He'd have a lot more respect from me if he did it with several mid tier guys in there.

I'd say if the talent wants to come to you, might as well use it. Their talent pool is seriously crazy. Tonight at 125 two pennsylvania wrestlers will square off for a title. Neither got heavily recruited by psu because they went after Suriano.

Imagine watching two Iowans wrestling each other Saturday night and neither is a hawk and it doesn't matter because we have it locked up anyway.

I'll take Cael and Brands, over Ryan, who sticks a needle into a kid with broken ribs to wrestle, or Perry, who waves red flags to buy cheap lungers for his wrestlers.

Wut? Ryan injecting his wrestlers? You guys are bitter. I don't know what you are referring to, but if I'm wrestling and can get a legal injection from a trained professional that will help me, I'm getting it.

Just to add a little craziness to this, not only did both come from PA, they also came from the same district.

I respect good recruiting. And, by and large, when guys show up there they improve. He does it both well.

This.

And for those that think Sanderson doesn't really need to recruit because he has all the studs right in his PA back yard, there's a reason all those studs go to Cael at PSU. He's built himself a massive reputation of winning as a wrestler, now as a coach. His program wrestles more aggressively than any other, and he is able to get his kids to peak at the right time of the year to wrestle their best. Kids want to go wrestle for a coach like that, so he deserves more credit than many give him.

Yep. I doubt kids like Joseph or Hall would be national titlests as a Freshman at Iowa. I hate to say that. Cael is just the best recruiter and coach out there. It sucks, but that's the way it is. He'd win national titles at Iowa too.

Iowa State is not equal to Iowa in terms of history or resources devoted to wrestling, AINEC.

You are missing the point. Prior to Cael going to PSU, they hadn't won a national title in 58 years. ISU had won 6 in that time period. ISU had the history and the resources that you are speaking of. In fact, along with OSU, they were one of the teams to beat for 30 years before Gable LEFT THEM to coach at Iowa. But Cael couldn't win there for some reason.

I'm not stating this to belittle Cael, but NO coach has more to work with than Cael. It's not even close. Hell, there are more PA all Americans NOT wrestling at PSU than IA all Americans wrestling at Iowa, Iowa State and UNI combined

Agree. The sport seems to be in a weird era, where one team, PSU, has somehow been able to grab the very best HS kids at nearly every weight. Cael never had this kind of success at ISU.

Brands got Gilman (ranked 4th in his weight class in HS, and Clark, ranked 3rd) and developed both of them into ncaa finalists and a champion in Clark. That's impressive. Gulibon was ranked higher than either Gilman or Clark, but somehow didn't develop the way the Iowa lightweights did. Meeks was ranked higher, and went nowhere.

Cael's name will be in the record books, but I have very little respect for the man, ever since he abruptly left ISU after they canned Douglas to make Cael head coach.

Whether it's simply being in more fertile recruiting territory, a slush fund, fairy dust or whatever, it's unprecedented in my experience of following wrestling for many decades. Bizarre.

But the pigtail bye points (which no longer exist) would make up for the fewer placing points, and roughly even it out to the 2017 scoring.

You get an answer you don't like and act like crying child - typical. Have a good night.

With all due respect, yours is not a strong argument.

Cael "developing" a lower ranked wrestler to a 7th place finish (English), and a few years later another gets 4th place (Conway) isn't how PSU won national team championships. Rather they rely heavily on studs who typically are AA status out of HS, and some reaching the finals their Fr year.

Well, can you really hold it against him for recruiting so well? #slush fund

Don't take anything seriously from 21 clowns. He is delusional.

Actually English was pivotal that year. And the response of "Gtfo with that weak s***" is just plain childish.

Cael is no different than Dan Gable. They both left their schools to coach elsewhere. But it was okay for Gable because he was a star and was great at Iowa. Well, Sanderson was also a star and quickly grew to become a star coach.

Of course, the claims now for success are that he is in fertile recruiting grounds and that is how he does it. Be for real! In Dan Gable's run of Nattys, the fertile grounds were the midwest. Iowa, Ok St, and Ok became the dominant teams. That's where the recruits came from Even as such, each pulled a few stud kids from other area just as PSU has recently done. (Texas, Minny, Calif. Ind) for example.

I guess all I'm asking is try to be objective. I know there are many that are objective and can respect PSU's recent successes. I just can not figure out the hate that is often spewed here; it's even more confusing because most posters here truly follow and understand wrestling. Did I dislike Dan Gable for what he produced? As an opponent, of course. Did I understand the value of his contributions to wrestling? Without a doubt.

When it come to the promotion of wrestling, DG, TB and CS are on the same team. Why is that so hard to accept?

And as I have said on previous posts, I have been to Iowa for 36 straight years to visit the in-laws (sadly now only 1) as my wife is an Iowa grad. Love the friendly people there.
You might be surprised that people in PA are friendly, too. Healthy competition can be good.

I didnt see any kids out there. Only young men of legal age.My oldest turned 18 a few months ago and I told her your an adult now you need to make sure you make adult decisions. I get tired of this kid crap. He is a grown man and is responsible for his own choices. I assume you are talking about Snyder. I doubt there are too many people in the world who can force him to do something he doesnt want to.

Cael's situation is very different than Gable. ISU had a HOF coach in Nichols who wasn't going anywhere. Iowa got Gable with the understanding he would take over soon.

ISU pushed a HOF coach out of ISU to make Cael the head coach. He was given the job at his alma mater with guys he recruited as an assistant and did well there. Tom Brands came back to Iowa and won titles. Cael went to PSU. These are the facts.
