College Officiating is Out of Control

a couple things here...
first.... the NBA is not alone when it comes to publicly admitting horrible calls... that's not the issue here...

and two... the Donaghy situation is deeper than just one rouge referee...
2002 Western Conference Finals Game 6 is proof of that.

its not the only example in basketball history that we've seen games blatantly fixed...
and Game 6 was fixed.
there is no arguing against that.

we are seeing such poor officiating in recent years.... there is no way to know which games are being fixed, and which ones are not...

which should cause you to wonder if they aren't all being fixed.

I'm old enough to remember a time when the WWF proclaimed itself to be a legitimate sporting event.

Yes, there is. It is by no means as cut and dried as you make it out to be. And I'm a lifelong Celtics fan/Laker hater.

http://www.realclearsports.com/articles/2014/04/28/did_nba_really_fix_its_playoff_games_97937.html

Did you read the entire article? They go into why that game wasn't fixed. The officiating wasn't great, but the bad calls went both ways.

You should know by now SSG T there are only bad calls against the team you are rooting for.

NBA has the last two minute report as well as Rod Thorn letting people know the next day when a call was blown.

Don't let the Donaghy situation fool you, NBA refs are the best of any sport, and they get held accountable when they're in the wrong.

In my opinion NHL referees are the best.

What gets me about basketball referees is the inconsistency from conference to conference. Part of the big ten's struggles at times in the NCAA tournament is that the games are called a lot tighter than conference play, which lets a lot of physical play go.

the officials have no accountability to the media.... what so ever...
and yes of course money is why the crooks run the show... I get that.

but... the NBA is not the model system for officiating... NBA officials NEVER give an account to the media either.

by making officials answer to the media after every game... just like coaches and players... it keeps everybody HONEST.

there ain't nothing silly or unreasonable about being HONEST.

and look... we all watch the games... we can see whats going on...

these officials night in and night out do a horrible horrible job.

this is why people don't want to pay 100+ dollars to go to these games and watch their team get screwed over by bad officiating.

I for one have stopped going to these games for that sole reason.

I don't trust the officiating... and why should I ?
they are above the law.... they are above accountability.

here is the thing - when I sit down with someone and explain to them what officials are looking at, why they're doing or not doing certain things, why they allow some things and penalize others, they begin to understand and see the game this way. Your ability to properly evaluate officiating is based on nothing other than your perspective. Of course there will be times that the crew flat out misses calls. It happens. It's going to continue to happen forever.

NBA officials don't owe the public any type of explanation on a nightly basis. If the NBA is satisfied with the job Joe Borgia is doing, that's all that matters. The NBA officials are accountable to Joe Borgia, who is accountable to Adam Silver. The folks who control their jobs are the ones they are accountable to, not the public. The same goes for college basketball officials. They aren't accountable to you or the media; they're accountable to their bosses (league coordinators of officials) and their bosses' bosses (league commissioners, NCAA coordinator of officials), and there isn't anything wrong with that. Me being accountable to the public after every game I work will not make me more "honest" of an official. I'm already working my tail off to get as many calls as I can right. I don't care who wins or loses. I want both teams to walk off the court and feel like they got a fair shake. And the public's view of whether or not that happened on a nightly basis doesn't impact the truth of it. In general, the public's ability to evaluate quality of officiating is very poor. And it's not every officials' job to educate the public about what it is they're doing. If the public is ignorant to mechanics, court coverage, coverage responsibilities, RULES - then they need to work to understand what is going on rather than simply get upset because they think the officials are bums. More than likely, when they arrive at a conclusion like that, it's because they're too lazy to try to understand what is going on and would rather just call the refs "horrible".

it would be my pleasure to answer to anyone...
I think this is something that should be talked about... and I do believe there is a solution.
and I gave you the solution.

but... think about what you are asking me.... you want me to give accountability... and I do...
yet... you don't expect the same from the officials on the floor...
think about it.... everybody on that floor has to give an account... except the referees.

Officials have to give an account...to their bosses. Not to the public. Just because they arent accountable to you doesn't mean they don't have to give an account. This is the ignorance I mentioned in my post above. I'm not mad at you for it, and don't take it personally because I'm not trying to insult you, but you're rushing to assumptions that aren't true.

I think officials make around $2500-$3000 per game for the big conferences.

I ref 5A high school and have officiated Colorado State a few times when they do full game scrimmages. I can't even begin to describe how much harder it is to officiate major college bball. I reffed the best team in CSU history a few years ago with Eustachy. Couldn't believe how fast the game is on those level of teams.

This is the perspective I think a lot of people don't understand. And for the majority of officials, we're working day jobs right next to you at work and then heading off to study, prep, and referee that evening. Yes, we travel so we work remotely and whatnot, but the NBA actually employs their officials and they are full-time professionals. We're doing the best we can given that we're all independent contractors and work with different partners almost every single night. Many of us were college athletes, and it's still hard to keep up with all the moving parts on the court, monitor the shot clock and game clocks, manage coaches, etc. These are high level athletes, and it's extremely easy to lose angles in no time even when you're working hard to keep them. Throwing the whistle on and working a couple of games would go a long way in helping people understand that this isn't as easy as they think it is, and despite our best efforts, people who don't know what they're looking at are going to criticize us EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.

I do believe the NBA has been controlled by officiating for many... many years...

and I do believe in recent years that every NCAA basketball game is controlled.

and what I mean is... there is an agenda going into each and every game... as to who they are going to favor while officiating... whether they want to keep it close.... or favor one team or the other....

back in the day they just called fouls on one team's best player and essentially fouled him out of the game... today it is more subtle...

see... rather than honing their skills to be better officials.... they are trained to be better deceivers... and one easy way to do that is to look completely incompetent all game every game

I do not believe these officials are just gawd awful every single game.
there's NO WAY all these officials are just unable to call one single good game.
its not possible to be this bad without it being on purpose.

so yes.... in a sense.... I do believe every game, NBA and NCAA, is fixed.
not necessarily to guarantee a winner... but sometimes, yes...
we see that happening with Kansas alot... we see that with Michigan State every single year in the Big Ten Tournament...

I do not in anyway believe these officials are honest people...
and I have no reason to believe they are honest people.

however... I do believe if they were held accountable... it would give them more freedom to just go out and call a good game... and ultimately become better officials.

I do not believe they are in that type of situation now.... I believe they officiate according to the Directives given them.

and... just watch any basketball game.... watch it with an open mind...
without rooting interest...

focus on the referees... if you are honest... you will see it too.
these officials are just really poor at what they do... or they are crooked snakes.

but... now... having said that... I don't think they are alone in this...
watch ESPN.... notice the announcers lack of attention when a terrible call is made... and not just the announces... but the camera men... sometimes you see a replay.... sometimes you don't.

I don't believe all the announcers at ESPN are mandated to hush up about officiating... but I think most are.

one thing is clear..... every fan who ever watches any game... they can see the bad calls.... they can see the missed calls...

but let's be honest.... it would crush most people to think that maybe their favorite sport is rigged.

therefore they become BLIND to any sort of possibility that any game might be fixed.

we seen this in the 70's..... there were LOTS of people who would argue and get mad at the idea that the WWF was staged...

but then the time came when they were forced to admit it.

today.... the NBA.... the NCAA... and so forth.... they've learned from past mistakes.... and now their approach is much more subtle.

most fans scream and complain... and then go on with their daily lives.... trying not to think about how the system might be rigged.... against them... against the coaches... and against the players.

but does anybody ever wonder why the officials aren't made to give an account?
why are coaches fined for criticizing officials?

why weren't the officials from Game 6 arrested and thrown in prison?

why is it in the history of basketball..... there has never been deemed one single rigged game?

are we to believe that the last sporting event that was ever rigged was in 1919?

nobody ever thought to rig a game since then?

are you sure about this?

LMAO!!!

the problem is not at all imperfection...
the problem is that there is no accountability.

now... making excuses is fine.. I won't beat you up over that...
but if its too hard, find something else to do.

Did OIT get a new handle?

I don't know who you are talking to... nor do I know who OIT is...

but think about this... if the people with all the money and power who are running the show... if they are corrupt...
and if they are the only ones who the referees are accountable to..
then that makes the referees nothing more than agents of corruption.

imagine if coaches were only accountable to AD's
imagine if players were only accountable to Coaches.

there would be no need for the media.

it is the media's responsibility to keep people in check.
the media is the mediator between teams and fans.

they are a necessity to keep the balance of power...
the same goes for politics.
the media has the responsibility to keep everybody honest.

yet..... in the game of basketball...
the referees don't have to give an account to the media.

even though the President of the United States has to give an account to the media.
these referees are above the law.... they are above even the President.
they are untouchable.

they are treated like an unseen god.
and they have an ego to match.
