I was most impressed with Coop last night. Like everybody else said, match against Gannt was much closer than the score. But that look in his eyes last night was same you see with Gilman. This guy is focused and doesn't appear to have any fear. He is just strong enough and quick enough to make some noise in March.

Wish Coop was a freshman. One of the few guys not scared to shoot

I was impressed with what Cooper did, but he still has a ways to go to make some noise in March. Agree with Chief that I wish he had a few more seasons.

Second time that happened this season. I think Coop would play hell in a fight but is cool as the other side of the pillow and doesn't get rattled. AA or not, he is a 49 wrestling up and has done a heck of a job for us.
Not to mention he could have stayed at Upper Iowa and probably won a couple of D2 titles. He wanted to be a Hawkeye and compete at the highest level. I think it says a lot about his character. I'm an Edwin Cooper fan.

I agree. He came out determined and ready for a fight. He gave Gantt all he wanted for the first 2 periods but then Gantt's talent separated them. That's no dis to Cooper, it's just that Gantt is really good. His length and strength give people fits. From nuetral he's the 157 version of Ed Ruth in my opinion.

I was proud how tough he wrestled Gantt. That being said he isn't going to make any noise. At best he maybe can get into the round of 12 but likely will fall just short of that. There are way too many guys like Murphy, Lewis, Berger etc that are toss ups to slightly better than Coop. Nothing about that Berger win screamed it would happen again. Lewis also lost the first time then came back and got him the 2nd time. He will likely get a QTR matchup against a top 4 seed. Let alone a Rodriguez type that will compete for AA status. He would have to beat 2 of those Lewis, Berger type of guys in wrestle backs and that wont happen. 1 of them sure but the consistency has never been there to go on a hot streak.

was not a cooper fan, but he has progressed through the year. sure hope he goes out with a bang. tough row to hoe, count me in .

And you know what, that's OK. He's going to go out and do his best. That's all we ask. What we hate is when a guy goes to Rd of 12 because he was too timid. If your talent only takes you so far, that's not your fault, do your best.

Great post and same way I look at it. Give it your all is all we fans can ask. Go as far as your talent will take you Go down with some fight in ya and I really expect to see the Hawks come back at b10"s and do the best of their ability..Let last Monday be the awakeing ..

Love this thread. Really pulling for Cooper to finish strong. It's great to see this kind of support for any of our guys -- especially a guy who hasn't always had the easiest time of it on the mat this year. We're behind you, Cooper!

EDIT: Well, the same goes for every kid on the roster, but it's cool to dedicate a thread to a guy now and then -- particularly a guy who's struggled a little.

Then how about we bring in more Corvettes and less Buicks we have to give participation ribbons to?

I don't think anybody would argue with that sentiment. Just saying that its awfully tough to get a corvette at every weight class (unless you're PSU apparently) , and that we need to get the most we can out of the buicks in the absence of a corvette.

Look at this guy. No Fear. He couldn't care less about Gantts ranking or the fact he got majored by him the last time they wrestled. Eye of the Tiger. This is what we need out of Grothus and Rhoads.

Coops the man. Your crazy if you think he can't AA. There are 5 guys at this weight that are above the rest. Coop needs to have a great big tournament and get 3rd or 4th. That way he can get around the ten seed at nationals. Kid is a fighter and will give any of those guys hell. If he's in a r12 match vs someone like Murphy or Manotti I'll put my money on Cooper. I'm not saying he's a lock but it's not out of the realm.

I'm in the heart and effort camp too. Go Coop!! I wish these attributes could be bottled and poured over every ounce of food the Iowa team eats in the next week. If you are senior, this may be the last time you ever wrestle, don't waste it. If underclassman, don't make yourself wait 8 months to correct/adjust not giving it your all which is how it has looked for the Hawks the last couple years at end of season. Notice: I said this is how it looks from the outside.

That's pretty uncharitable toward a guy who's working his a@@ off to get better. Not to get philosophical, but in the grand scheme of things, life isn't about finishing first every time. If that's the lesson this sport is supposed to impart to Cooper and his teammates, they might as well give up now and start hitting the bottle. I'm not Dan Gable at my job and I bet you aren't either. The point is to credit these guys when they persevere, battle and improve. I get the point about recruiting, and I and everyone else who posts here agrees with you, but you don't need to denigrate Cooper for not being Jason Nolf (e.g., "participation ribbon").

Coop has definitely had some tough competition this year. Probably more so than the rest of the hawks. He's a tough guy and he's got some pretty solid offense. He's a bit of a long shot to AA, but anything can happen in March!
