Coronavirus...In all Seriousness...

Ask Corona Beer how their sales are doing. It’s because it’s natural to make associations as ridiculous as they may be. If possibly one of the worst pandemics in a generation originated at the University of Iowa would you think it would be of no consequence if everyone called it the Iowa Hawkeye Flu of 2020? Would people avoid those with Hawkeye gear? Would it hurt enrollment? Now apply that feeling to an entire country of people who already have to deal with xenophobia and marginalization.
Well sales are up so.....

Actually it has many names and none of them are harmful in any way. Calling the China virus the Wuhan virus harms no one. Calling COVID 19 the corona virus harms no one. Calling the Hawkeyes the Hawks harms no one. Sorry I refuse to join the “we must be offended by something” culture that seems to be growing sadly.

You seem pretty offended.

Being precise doesn't make you politically correct...it makes you correct. I have seen intelligent people not get contracts because they get lazy how they talk about details. Maybe Wuhan is a slur and maybe it isn't. At this point more have died in China than any other country but the book isn't closed on this pandemic.

Do we really have to make it sound like the elderly Americans who will pass from this virus died in a bad kung fu movie? 'The Wuhan got them'

It seems as though everything in medicine is thought of in terms of cost per quality year saved - screening mammograms, colonoscopies, etc. If it is too expensive and doesn’t save enough lives, it is not recommended. Not emotional, but calculated.

It would be interesting to see that number after the coronavirus has run it’s course. Right now, it seems as though the disease primarily causes death in the very old and those in poor health or those who are immune compromised - theoretically the people with the least number of quality years left. The global panic and actions are causing the world economies to go into a global recession (and possibly depression) - the cost is immense.

I am not advocating letting grandma and grandpa die because we don’t care. Just pointing out that the emotions, panic and actions that are taking place now seem to fly in the face of the rest of medicine which is more logically calculated.

Well put.

I also understand trying to slow the spread... but there is no stopping what is coming. Funny how much us humans try so desperately to control the uncontrollable.

Flu pandemics have always been referred to by popular names - swine flu, bird flu, Spanish flu, Asian flu, Hong Kong flu, Russian flu. If one started in Chicago it would probably be called the Chicago flu. Even doctors and scientists refer to these pandemics by popular name. I'm simply amazed at the level we've sunk to searching for things to be offended by.

Statement on COVID-19 and NCAA championship events
March 10, 2020 5:45pm
The NCAA continues to assess how COVID-19 impacts the conduct of our tournaments and events. We are consulting with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel, who are leading experts in epidemiology and public health, and will make decisions in the coming days.

So say they decide to not allow fans at nationals; will the only way to watch it all be on Flo? If so those boys are going to make some good money.

The Nationals have been broadcast on ESPN channels for several years. ESPNU, ESPN2, ESPN depending on the session I believe.

Gotcha. I don’t know how it all works but I wonder if their servers can handle the amount of traffic they would be getting with everything.

I am not offended. Just pointing out his reasoning was circular. There is a place for popular names and a place for technical nuance. Wuhan sounds like a bad kung fu gang and I will continue to laugh at that joke. If he wants to sound ignorant for the purpose of making a statement that says more about him than the 'point' he is trying to not be entrapped in I am going to laugh at that being his chosen hill to die on.

If by “he” you are referring to me then you need to go back to where this discussion began. It was stated that much damage is done by calling it the Wuhan virus or the China virus. I just called BS on that because it’s BS. No hill. Hopefully no death. Not really sure what you’re trying to prove here in relation to the original comment but knock yourself out.

I have read the whole thread. Yes the things you keep being triggered on and how you arrive to what is BS is what I was referring to. Purposely calling it Wuhan or China virus with the intention of being offensive is different than calling it Wuhan or China virus because covid 19 is not how you are innocently in the habit of referring to it. Intentionally being offensive is damaging irreguardless if one is offended or not.

And I didn’t say what I call it. I just said I don’t give a crap what anyone calls it because it doesn’t matter what it’s called. Say that I’m triggered or offended all you want. It doesn’t make it so. Very strange “argument” you are trying to make out of this. I’m done with it.

As you should have been before you posted anything in this thread.

It's Cable TV. Don't know how that works with streaming Hulu, Youtube, etc., if you're a cord cutter.

I have Cable so not worried at all.

.0002166 is 0.02166%. There is a % there.

You are correct. Got it. Decimal point details...........

Italy has it pretty bad with 10G cases. But that only represents .016% of the population (1 case per 6,000).

We know we can't stop it. But the goal is to level out the rate of infection. If everybody (not everybody but hopefully you know what I mean) gets infected within a small time frame, resources are beyond overloaded and doctors will have to decide who gets resources and who doesn't (and potentially dies). It's a multiple casualty incident at every hospital at basically the same time.

If we can manipulate social behavior (for example, limit large gatherings of people), we can better prevent resources being overloaded (meaning, there are enough ventilators, nurses, medications, oxygen tanks, beds) and better provide help for those who need it.

Recent statement from NCAA regarding coronavirus.

NCAA President Mark Emmert's statement on limiting attendance at NCAA events
March 11, 2020 4:29pm
The NCAA continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel. Based on their advice and my discussions with the NCAA Board of Governors, I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance. While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States. This decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of coaches, administrators, fans and, most importantly, our student-athletes. We recognize the opportunity to compete in an NCAA national championship is an experience of a lifetime for the students and their families. Today, we will move forward and conduct championships consistent with the current information and will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.

And there are reports from Italy where the patients on ventilators are in hallways (rooms are all full) and doctors are deciding which new patients get treatment and which don't. I don't know if any news sources have confirmed these reports (and I'm sure there are some who still wouldn't believe them even if they did).

At least Fluffy has the right handle.

Everything is politics

Yes, they’re essentially performing triage and the older, less healthy patients are not getting priority. Also, there’s not medical care for other emergencies since their health care system is beyond maxed.

But for real, idc what political stand you have - wrestling is great and please don’t cancel... I almost had a panic attack on my drive home. Fn scary how much fans take this stuff to heart .
