Craig Neal and the Fraud together again...

If you like Frauds you might have enjoyed watching Fred Hoyburger’s squad lose to UC Irvine at home by 19. His team had absolutely no clue what they were doing. No doubt he will whip them into shape. Bet those Husker are happy they canned Tim Miles who was a good guy and could actually coach.

I'd hate to see what you say about Fran if you don't think Hoiberg can coach.

Nebraska will struggle this year and a lot of that will have to do with the fact this was the first game anyone on that team has played with each other. I can't think of another team that has had to deal with something like that. A team completely new to one another. Will be interesting to see where they are at the end of the year. It may take a year or two but I'm not foolish enough to doubt Hoiberg.

They had a foriegn trip to Italy I believe. So....they have played together before

Could he really coach, or was he just good at bringing in players that other schools kicked to the curb? He didn't do crap in the pros, and he only succeeded with a bunch of punks.

Not to be a douche, but I've wondered the same thing. No question he brought in guys who could play, but it was a "street ball" sort of plan. Sort of the old adage of "roll the ball out there and let them go".

I don't get the vitriol on here for Fred Hoiberg. An Iowa native who played his way in to the NBA at an Iowa school (and don't tell anybody, but he's a white kid......). He's always been a good guy as far as I'm concerned. He did take on some shaky transfers in his years at Iowa State, but I don't see where that makes him the Devil reincarnated.

He'll do just fine at Nebraska eventually IMO.

I believe Hoiberg will do well at Nebraska, but regarding your comment about the team never playing with each other, you do realize that Kentucky and Duke do this annually, right?

I think Hoiberg will do a nice job at Nebraska. This is his first year and expect the roster to be overhauled moving forward. Fred is a good guy. I attended ISU when he did and had the chance to interview him several times when I worked for the ISU Daily (student newspaper) ... I've always rooted for him. He's a good human being. He will do a nice job in Lincoln.

Nebraska will be at the bottom of the B1G and could struggle to win more than 2-3 games in conference, unless they added some guys off the street in the off season. I love seeing the Huskers suck, even more so in FB.

I don't have any vitriol for him, really. I admire what he's accomplished frankly. I just in the past have wondered about his coaching level. Obviously it didn't work in Chicago, but some may have been him and certainly some was his roster and the health of it. At ISU, you mentioned the transfers, and my point there was that he brought in some great athletes and seemed to "turn them loose". Of course that takes and eye for athleticism and such, and it certainly worked for him, but what's the phrase: "the X's and O's or the Jimmies and Joes"?

Many on the team missed that trip including starting PG. They've never played a regular season game together before. They looked disjointed last night.

They replace every single player but one with new players? Interesting because not only do they typically return key bench guys but most seasons they also have a starter or two back. Oh and the guys Duke and Kentucky typically bring in are somebof the highest rated recruits in the country who can win on skill a lone. Last night I watched Maxey of Kentucky single handedly beat MSU. Most of Kentucky looked disjointed last night.

I just don't care what happens to Alford anymore - kinda sad imo that he still gets brought up. Unless we happened to play his team on the court someday, he's just totally irrelevant to me.
I'm done talking about it now I just didn't realize Neal joined him again and they are in freaking Nevada now....

Gee, I thought he was born in Nebbie. Right or wrong?. And I suppose he couldn't help that nickname of The Mayor, but it always turned me off.

I agree, kind of.
Success in an environment where he is allowed to let players get away with things that most can't doesn't make him NOT the devil either.
You can convince me he didn't do anything that hasn't/isn't being done but he is not a saint and his program at ISU wouldn't not have been nearly as successful if his players were held accountable to many of the standards society has set for the rest of us.

I used to be a fan of Hoiberg, but after taking the job at Nebraska, not so much anymore.

He also loved Lickliter.
Thought he was a great hire, but by year 2 it was pretty obvious he was in over his head. Tried to be supportive and be a good fan but I did come to the conclusion that a change needed to be made. I was wrong about him and so were a lot of other people. Big deal.

I'd be very careful putting down NE, Iowa has some serious issues too. Losing Foster would not help. Iowa could easily fall off the teeter-todder.

Getting back to the OP's tread title, l Just looked at the bio's of both Alford and Neal on the Nevada website and lo and behold neither mentions their time here at Iowa. The only reference mentioned on there stay here was the 2 Big Ten Tournament Champion wins his teams manufactured along with a few others elsewhere. Nothing like wiping away history when it goes sour.

If I'm forced to choose a guy who can recruit athletes and "let them play" over recruiting non-athletes who play together for have a very low ceiling, I'm choosing the former. And I don't think Hoiberg just let them play at ISU. He coached offense in a way that valued either taking 3's or layups/dunks. That is the way of modern offense, the analytics would tell you that it's better to do it that way.

I don't judge guys too much on what they do in the NBA. Most every NBA coach can coach. You don't win squat there without talent. The Bulls are a crap-show, and continue to be even after Hoiberg is gone.

Nebraska will stink in hoops this year. All depends on how well Hoiberg can recruit.

That's the NBA coaching model.

Here's an NBA championship plan. Sign Michael Jordan. Sign some big guy that can get rebounds, not a ton of rebounds 'cuz Mike will get those too. Sign one other good shooter. Not necessarily great because, again, Mike will do that as well. Just enough to prevent triple teams on Mike.

You don't need to bother coaching Mike to mug his man like Jack Tatum, that's just going to happen naturally. Tell your other guys to play D. Oh, last coaching word. For God's sake, just do whatever Mike tells you, cause he does my job too.

Confirm the ball boy has the ball inflated to Mike's preference.

Get a Dr. Pepper and watch some ball.

Perhaps it was that way when you checked, but I went there after reading your post and Alford's page says "Iowa" several times. The writing is otherwise horrible, though. Guess standards are low for athletic department web sites.

Very very rich man!
