Defense Secretary Austin orders renaming of military bases with Confederate ties - will cost 62.5 million.

Even if you forget that Bragg fought for the confederacy…..he was one of the crappier confederate generals.

His biggest victory was Chickamauga but his army of Tennessee was beefed up by Longstreets corps that was on loan from the Lee’s Northern Virginia Army. Longstreet was arguably the confederates best corps commander leading the confederates most powerful corps.

Anyway, Bragg beat the Army of the Cumberland at Chickamauga but wasted a lot time and failed to follow it up when he could have annihilated the union army. Some historians think that failure was maybe the confederates last real chance at “winning” the civil war. Or least bringing the union to the table.

Longstreet takes his corps back to Virginia and Bragg immediately gets his ass seriously kicked at Chattanooga by Grant which leads to an unending string of ass kickings that ends with the Union rampaging through the south and burning Atlanta ect.

Anyway, Bragg didn’t deserve a base being named after him for reasons besides being a confederate.

He sucked.
This is the point @NorthernHawkeye snd the other supporters of keeping the names always ignore. Most of these bases are named for losers. There were political considerations in naming these bases way back when. But, I suppose their is a reason Northern keeps ignoring this point.

Easy to say when your spending other people's money. But that's the liberal way.
Actually Democrats were in charge when most - or many - names were approved.
And now they’re in charge again so they can tell their dimwit voters they corrected an “injustice” but “Republicans” didn’t support it.
What else could be done with that $62 million?
Naming these based after Confederate leaders was very ill advised but so is blowing more of our money many years later.

Good. We should also pay to destroy all confederate monuments anywhere in the country and give every citizen that takes a piss on them a tax deduction.

I wonder how much it's costing the taxpayers because of a corrupt past twice impeached disgraced president has broken multiple laws and now has to be investigated.

imagine being a black child, Travelling down stonewall Jackson highway past (insert confederate general here) fort and going to robert e Lee memorial high school.

then googling who these people are and why they are .

you’re telling me $65mn is too much to spend on making sure our fellow citizens don’t have to suffer that indignity?

Long ago the rebels were forgiven and it should be left at that imo. Part of the deal was to move on. Buy a lottery ticket people, I sided with the righties once!

We had a Robert E Lee HS here in Jax for 100+ years AND a Nathan Bedford Forrest HS too. Those names were changed a few years ago and I’m glad they did it.

After spending the majority of my career assigned to Fort Bragg, it’s not the name of a base it’s the units that make up a fort that brings pride, any fort. Now, the names the panel chose aren’t the best IMO, some have great merit, others reached.

Fort Liberty for Fort Bragg is a joke. But makes no difference most of the Soliders on that fort spend the majority of their time on locations starting with: AOB, Ops Box, Firebase, FOB, DZ, LZ, Safehouse, AA and OBJ. That name of the Fort is the place where their family lives.

I wonder when you really started to care and when it bothered you.

Once they started base closures, l read up on it, and didn’t realize how many were named after Confederates.

Then when the issue of monument removal and statues came up a few years ago, became more interested.

This shouldn’t be a political issue, but of course, it is.

You against the renaming apparently?

We spent 300 million, per day, every day for 20 years in Afghanistan.

65 million pales - it’s 5 hours of Afghan war spending.

You gonna keep ducking the questions?
At the risk of flaming two of the notable flamers on here, why do you two care? Veterans represent less the ten percent of the current US population, and Active Duty personnel are currently under 1%. (~0.07). Go debate the woke thread, or tell us what music you are listening too, or how you like your steak cooked or rank the meth head arrested stealing crappy Davenport pizza… because frankly your comments are boring.

I look at it like one of those things where it didn’t cross my mind and therefore it didn’t bother me, but now that I’m more aware of it it makes no sense at all and ought to be changed. And I recognize that some people might find it offensive.
I’m aware of it now. I went to Ft Jackson for Basic Training and Ft Lee for AIT. Never crossed my mind,

As far as people being offended by it, there’s a lot of that going around. Not just based and statues. People are finding the smallest things to be offended by. Victims for life, IMO.

that’s my point. Doing this once for forts is worth the money. $62mn one time is nothing.

What is your limit? What cost?

there is no price that’s too high.

my sense of right and wrong isn’t subject to financial convenience

Smallest things? Ok…

There’s the racial aspect, and I can understand why AA citizens might be a little put off by Confederate memorials and place names. But also the rebellion aspect, which, after what we saw a couple years ago, I don’t think we should celebrate or memorialize.
