Des Moines sucks!

The section of DM where the Kimmie faction of the state government hangs out - yeah, that part of DM sucks.

Show me any city in the United States where those type of things don't happen. Child abduction and assault is attempted in major and small cities all over. School shootings in Perry IA for Gods sake. Big or small. Exaggeration for effect, and you're purposefully selective, and poor at it. Snowflake.

What am I exaggerating?

They need to bring back those "Des Moines sucks!" shirts from a couple decades back.

Downtown Hy-Vee reduces hours, cites crime and loitering as reasons why

I agree with this. Des Moines has sucked for....well, ever.

Based on your linked article, I'm guessing we have different reasons for the suckage though.

Hyvee is completely terrible at understanding market needs and demographics. They should have built one of their smaller market stores in downtown DSM instead of a large full service store.

They are stuck in this idea that they want to sell pretty much everything instead of just being a good grocery store
The folks in West Des Moines have these insane ideas and then blow countless amounts of dollars on it and force seemingly all of the stores to carry it out as though Waukee is the same as Albia. Or that there's seemingly no different between Omaha and Estherville.

I know guys who are Wine and Spirits managers in the metro and in rural areas. The rural guys would get cases of French wine, stupid celebrity spirits, private label liquor, or other nonsensical items forced on them by corporate. And then when the shit doesn't sell, they catch hell for it.

At one point all the stores were being forced to order cases of Bedlam vodka, which is some trash spirit that Jason Derulo endorses. Same with moonshine because of their Indy car sponsorship, and private label rum trying to compete with Captain Morgan, and Irish whiskey to compete with Jameson, and vodka to compete with Tito's. Millions of dollars just thrown in the dumpster.

Just look at the Mark Wahlburg stuff — hamburgers, weight training supplements, his tequila brand. That's millions of dollars worth of inventory and displays and in some cases entire store remodeling just because the former CEO wanted to be bros with him. And their board members just go along with it.

The downtown DSM store is a great microcosm for everything that's wrong with Hy-Vee. Since that place opened in 2017, they have remodeled it and changed it relentlessly. They have no idea what it was ever supposed to be or what they want it to be.

I will say before my parents left Fort Dodge, I would go to that wine and spirits by the movie store and they would be carrying a lot of stuff I wish I could find in the Omaha metro.

Can't be worse than the Ankeny North HyVee and its clothing then shoes section. They finally have converted it to a hair product/makeup/toiletries section which has things a sane person actually wants to buy in a grocery store.

Former Beer Delivery guy here and you are absolutely correct about the Managers catching hell. I had a "rural" route. Their corporate and/or our bosses would want us to pound expensive IPA's, Stella and Fruity stuff in for displays just so when it doesn't sell in those areas I'd have to pick it all up and bring it back. Sometimes you just can't force things on a Coors or Busch Lt. community.
Those W&S Managers always looked stressed as hell and were mostly great people. I always felt bad for them.

PS In my experience about 98% of the STORE Mangers were clueless and inept.

Wait so you're saying not every family's version of back to school shopping is Hy-Vee?

I'd be curious to know Hyvee's financial condition, 8-10 years ago they were known as one of the better operators, but it's seemed to have gone the opposite direction since then and I wonder if it's evident in their financial results.

I get the feeling that HyVee leadership was trying to make moves to get sold to a bigger fish and secure a big payout for themselves, and now they've lost sight of their customer base and the values that initially built the company.

A Department Manager I got close to literally in their words said "this was a good job when I chose to make it my career"

I complained about people using the skywalk as a toilet last winter, but they have really stepped their efforts in cleaning it up this winter. And even at its smelliest, I have never felt in danger. And they certainly have not dampened activity at establishments in DSM. As far as I can tell, the entertainment, food, and beverage sector is thriving, even as more and more business migrate west in the city and metro.
Lot of Homeless Honey gets dropped in the skywalk stairwell by Tuepelo Honey. Think of this as a PSA if you are going there to eat and want to keep your appetite.

Downtown Des Moines has always resembled a graveyard after 8pm. This isn't new. This goes back at least 30+ years. The lack of foot traffic shouldn't be surprising.

Cedar Rapids was a a similar scene for many years following store and restaurant closings in the 90s and early 2000s. Weekends were dead downtown. Then the flood occurred and the rebuilt downtown is more lively than it ever has been.

If you're in Omaha, go to Wine, Beer & Spirits in the old Toys-R-Us store near one of the malls. That place is amazing.

When I worked for the parking department at Iowa, people would use the stairwells as bathrooms all the time. All. The. Time.

Were you ever in Vito’s in the late 90s? The back corner of the bar was basically an open urinal. Dudes were always pissing on the wall back there.

The decline is very clear and started when Randy Edeker took over as CEO. That's when the place completely lost its way and tanked millions and millions of dollars on ridiculous projects and ventures and forgot its mission and markets. Now it's just another faceless bloated corporation.

If you talk to your local wine and spirits manager, I'm sure he will consider adding Hawkeye Vodka, Black Velvet, and Southern Comfort.

If one purchases Hawkeye Vodka more than one time on purpose, that person should seek treatment. It is the nastiest alcohol I have ever tasted, and I have had my share of rot gut. I once bought a bottle and tasted it, and nearly barfed. I tried to disguise it with Kool Aid or some shit. Still gross. I just dumped it down the drain. And this is from someone who would not turn down a Kirkland vodka straight, on the rocks.

It's always worth opening a Northern thread in which he pisses himself at the thought of going anywhere rougher than Indianola.

That is perfect for my brother, except he says he is scared to death of cities. He started texting this morning and I ignored them, but all were how the country is in the worst shape in his lifetime and he doesn't even know if it can be fixed in the next 4 years or 8 years with Rs in charge. He won't ever go to CA or NY and is scared of any city due to all the crime, homelessness, fentanyl (which all comes from illegals). He claims this admin has ruined everything and Joe will go down as easily the worst Pres in history. He is deep in Maga. Says he didn't want Trump necessarily, but only idiots would vote for other than the R nominee.

He left out the worst part about everything now. My grandma reminds us of it every time we get together as a family. The liberals are trying to get rid of Christmas, and the war on Christmas is well underway because she says whenever she walks into a store, there's no Christmas decor or Christmas items for sale anywhere.

Which clearly is not even remotely close to being true. But she sees it on the news, and somehow thinks it's accurate despite seeing all the Christmas stuff when she goes in to buy our Christmas cards every year.

Don't forget those city schools with litter boxes in the bathrooms and kids identifying as horses!

We would pre game in college by drinking Busch light and passing around a handle of Hawkeye until it was gone

In college, I didn't drink much of anything but beer, so I never went through the exercise of how many units of alcohol I could get for the fewest number of dollars. I suppose Hawkeye would probably win that exercise. Perhaps I should have excluded college kids from my general statement.

Is he able to enjoy the rest of his life or does this stuff pretty much underpin and dominate everything?

Not with Hawkeye Vodka - only butt chugging.

I had a group of friends who would do Hawkeye vodka gerbil shots. They'd bend the neck of the 1.75L plastic bottle, the person taking the shot would get on all fours, paw at the ground and beg for a shot. The person with the bottle would flip the bottle and feed the shot taker like a gerbil.....

Good times.

Some things I'm sure, but it really has started to dominate everything, both him and a good friend of both of ours. I'm trying to take the high road for the 2nd time. I have tried reasoning and they both left the twitter direct message goup and the text group. But then started up again eventually. I've decided (if I can hold to it, we went at it bad a week or so ago), it isn't worth it. They are both aligned that if there was a rape, he would be in jail, if there was anything to be indicted about, he wouldn't have a clean record for 70+ years, there was no insurrection, that was mostly Ds, teachers are grooming kids to be trans and gays, Ds are racist and caused a race war in order destroy the country in 2020 and also created Covid to end Trump's presidency. They get extremely angry and believe anything Elon or Collin Rugg or Libs of TT post. It is usually at night, but started this morning today.
