DeVries of Drake is the replacement if Fran is done

DeVries, Forbes, Schertz, Craig Smith. That would likely be the shortlist if it were to open up.
But again, I think this conversation is pointless as it's likely not going to happen this year. Which, for those that want DeVries, is likely a bummer as I would guess he gets a pretty good job this cycle. Curious to see if he gets Michigan if that opens up.
Jack has another year in HS doesn't he?

Would Hoiberg come to Iowa? He finds players overseas that no one knows existed. Got Nebraska looking good. Nebraska.

Lol most coaches work there way up the ranks and what DeVries has done at Drake consistently is extremely impressive.
He has done a good job at Drake. A lot of people thought McDermott was a good hire at ISU and didn't pan out. I have heard he has been so good at Creighton due to him learning how to "recruit" a better way at ISU.

I don't quite understand all the DeVries love. I've watched a few of their games including the choke job loss to Miami in the tournament last year, I guess I was never overly impressed. I could be wrong though too 🤷‍♀️

Creighton takes its basketball more seriously than Iowa State, too. No football and a very passionate local hometown base with a great facility.

DeVries would be a great choice.

Can’t let this be another Dana Altman situation where we talk ourselves out of the obvious choice in our own backyard in search of something sexier, and then end up with a Lickliter.

Yep. 1 more year of HS. Fran doesn't want to retire. There really is no appetite to fire a coach who made the previous 5 NCAA tournaments.
I also don't think that Jack wants to play for his dad, it's not an exclusively Iowa thing--so the idea of Fran taking a different job and coaching Jack isn't really something that's on the table from my understanding of the situation. Maybe I'm wrong in that.

Do I think that Fran may be trying to find another job? Probably. He tried to get Notre Dame and supposedly made some inquiries into the Temple job. But I think he also understands that he's almost certainly not going to get a P6 job and I'm not sure how attractive he is even to A10 level schools. La Salle is one that could be a very small possibility--but Iowa would likely have to waive his buyout for that to happen (which it might) and La Salle would certainly have to get some boosters to come in and make a big push for hoops to make a somewhat competitive offer in the 1.5-2 million range, which would be a pay decrease for Fran.

I agree. McDermott has gotten them to a higher level than what Altman did. He was able to "land" a couple of very talented players they weren't able to get in the past.

Yeah Fran is here another year for sure then. I'm on the fence and if we add pieces in transfer portal we'll be good next season. Agree that DeVries is gone once his son is done as well.

Lol Drake was trash for 5 decades and was immediately successful under DeVries for 7 years straight. This is an idiotic take for you.
They got good before DeVries… the guy at Colo St had’em playing well just before DeVries. Plus, the Drake job is a job DeVries really wanted. The quality of The Valley is shaky at best, too. DeVries has done a good job at Drake but the turn had occurred just before he got there. And The Valley ain’t the B10 by any stretch.

Originally from Minnesota as well. Ryan Odom would be another coach that would be an interesting hire.
I was impressed with what Smith did at South Dakota. Brought in some talented recruits and advanced the program. His teams always seem to get better which is a good sign. Midwest roots with B10 experience as top assistant at Nebraska. He recruits well.... sort of a poor man's Otzelberger (who he coached against when TJ was at SDSU) but a much better X and O coach.

What do you like about Devries? Not pushing back just don’t know much about him. Thx.

He likes his teams to get up and down the floor as well.

Successful in a craptastic conference. Mvc have had some good years. None of them been recent. How have valley teams done once they got to ncaa tournament the last 7 years…?

I do know what he has done at Drake, but to say they are a consistent tournament team is a stretch. I also believe it is easier to win in the Valley as well. One game away is not getting there.
When you’re in a conference where only 1 team out of 12 gets in it’s actually harder. Big Ten you can lose 8-9 conference games and get in.
