Devries Rumors Getting Louder

I think if Iowa lets this guy slip away, they’ll regret it for a long time
I don't know of a time when we had quite possibly two of the best coaching prospects with strong Iowa connections. Two people that might actually stay at Iowa for a long time and really establish the program to what it once was. I'd be happy with DeVries or McCollum, but would expect McCollum is more likely due to his cost being so much lower. But I really have no idea what Beth is thinking and the big donors are pushing.

Is Ben McCollum a native of Iowa?
Just curious.

Ahh, they are shooting higher per IndyStar

Scott Drew (Baylor), Dusty May (Michigan, born in Terra Haute), or Mick Cronin (USLA)
Dusty May also graduated from Indiana and served as a student manager under Bob Knight. All else being equal, I don't think you leave Michigan for Indiana. But maybe the ties are there.

McCollum is certainly on Indiana's list. But, he probably isnt top three on the list.

If what May said in an interview about the Indiana job is true, he will not take the job.

That will change with a new coach. Like any fans, Iowa fans just need something to get excited about. Nobody wants to give money to a program that is viewed as hopeless. It's been the same story for 15 years.

Just to give an idea of Iowa's potential for NIL - here is a historical ranking of donations at each school from 2005-2022. Iowa has a deep donor base.

Donation Rankings - 2005-2022
Swarm fund is for all sports and MBB is probably last on the list with FB, WR, and WBB. Swarm membership is at 3000 which is well below the goal of 10,000. You're telling me MBB is holding back the membership. I don't buy it.

If McCollum is allowed to leave the state of Iowa like Devries and has success... Oh boy.... This message board will burn to the ground

30 some years ago. You’re right, it’s not happening because he has a better job and makes more money.
Yeah, I don't think anyone cares about the Bruce Pearl/Deon Thomas thing anymore. That was 35 years ago.

But you're right. I don't see why Pearl would leave Auburn for Iowa at this point. Yeah he was an assistant here way back when, but Iowa was just one of many stops for him along the way. I doubt it's his dream job or anything.

Having watched DeVries and McCollum closer than most on this board as a Drake season tix holder, I am going on record to say I’d be happy with either, but my preference has switched from DeVries to McCollum.

There are a number of reasons why, but one of them is places like Minnesota and Northwestern are likely to be filling vacancies soon and seeing McC potentially leave for one of those I think will be more regretful for Iowa fans than seeing DeVries have success at WVU.

This would be my preference in a perfect world.

This sounds crazy but McCollum doesn't sound like a guy that would take just any job. That's why I'm not so sure about a MInnesota or Northwestern. I understand he would make a helluva lot more money but he stayed at NW Missouri State a long time until the right job opened up at Drake. Obviously the Iowa job would be a different story. And I'm with you that while I think DeVries is a really solid coach I think McCollum is a different level coach. I"ve stated it multiple times that he could be our Bo Ryan. If Iowa doesn't hire him I hope he stays at Drake a long time. The guy is unbelievable.

1989. 36 years ago. Was Beth even born? Lol. Please stop it.
Little….there is a reason “why” Pearl (and Collins) never coached in the B10….and it wasn’t because he can’t coach…he and Collins were effectively “black balled” as part of the settlement. Thomas finished school and Henson and Davis both stayed around many more years but Collins/Pearl ( the prime players in this saga) were deemed expendable.

I'm not sure Joel even knows what decade this is.

The idea Pearl is still on some black ball list even though any people who would have made such a list retired 20 years ago is comical.

If anyone even remembers Deon Thomas they certainly don't care at this point.

Ironically, Deon Thomas is employed by the U of Illinois. His title (no lie) Director, Major Gifts. Can’t make that up.

He also does some analysis for the BTN and has worked in the Illini Sports Network. I am a little surprised that the BTN hired him given the history, but I’m not losing sleep over it.

Woody made those teams with his defense and rebounding.
He made the effort to plug up the inside on D which IOWA hasn't had for some time. Pretty athletic and ran the court well. Didn't have much for hops but his senior year his 8+ rebounds a game was solid. His overall average of 5.5 career average at 7'1" isn't earth moving. What I never understood was the number of times he was backdoored when he ventured out to the free throw line extended following his man. It seemed "Stoogying" the ball handler was his answer to make sure they weren't able to see his man heading towards the rim for the DUNK.

Don’t be offering kids Chevy Blazers and there never would have been a problem
