Another thing we should think about is that the next Iowa MBB coach has got to do a better job connecting with fans. He will need to embrace the concept of NIL/facility fundraising and create programs that will make fans feel like this is their team, and a team they WANT to come out and support.
We really haven't had that in a while. I know people who have met Fran personally, and they describe him as a warm and friendly guy. But his public persona -- the thing most people see -- is pretty prickly. And his predecessors weren't much better -- Lickliter was aloof; Alford was an arrogant pr!ck; and Dr. Tom Davis was kind of "professorial."
Winning is probably the cure for everything; but I think at this juncture, it would really serve the MBB program well to hire a coach who is a man of the people. Someone who sees the team as the fans' team. Someone who will take an active role in bringing fans back into the arena, and supporting other programs that connect the players with the fans.
All this to say, I see some of that with McCollum. I've read stories about initiatives the Drake team has taken to connect with fans. It seems to be working ... they get good crowds at games, and fans have even taken to copying McCollum's signature blue-tie-and-white-shirt look. It would be great to get back to that kind of fan interaction in Iowa City.
