What I don't believe are the 'news' outlets who pushed the 'fine people' hoax, and who are pushing this one.

I think confirmation bias rules, and people will ignore what was said (e.g. "My heart goes out to you.") if it contravenes what they want to believe, especially when they want to convince others of it.
