Does anyone use these cheap mobile networks? Visible, Mint, etc.?

Like most of my bills, I'm lazy and have just kept paying my mobile bill for like 20 years. Once a decade or so I get all motivated to be better about my monthly subscriptions because I think I'm getting screwed by the man and I can't have that. My cell phone bill is my single biggest bill every month so it has me thinking. Do these cheap carriers actually work? Anyone have any experience with them? Should I join Ryan Reynolds' revolution?

Used Mint Mobile for 3 years at $15/month. Worked fine. I’m not much of a traveler though, so didn’t get a feel for how it worked across numerous areas. Haven’t looked at their current pricing.

Have Spectrum Mobile now and it’s so-so. Only switched due to 1 year free when initiating new Internet service. Now paying $30/month.

You can call your cell phone provider once a year and ask if they have any discounts for long time customers.

I've done that in the past and gotten some discounts.

Verizon pre-paid here. $38/month (incl. $10 off loyalty discount). 15 gigs data, 5G.

Never had a reason to switch, and I get a signal pretty much everywhere I go including the Mississippi River valley in NE Iowa.

I know some folks who use them and like them. Not a bad choice if you own your phones. My understanding is they use the same networks but have some reduced priority and high speed data access they can use so perhaps not as wide or dependable of coverage, though not sure.

I currently have two line w/ mint $15 per. Works as well as Verizon ever did. I'm pretty much on wifi all day though so I don't care about a data cap.

My kids are on Visible (Verizon network) for $15/month. No issues.

I pay $200.20 and that's with my employee 50% discount. I have 5 phone lines and 2 iPads.

*I pay for my mother's phone (she's poor) and my daughter's line--she reimburses me; just using my discount.

We use cricket - 4 lines for $100 plus hotspot add ons for the parent phones. Never had a complaint.

I've got post paid T-mobile for $30/mo unlimited everything. It's a grandfathered deal from Sprint after a customer service snafu. If not for that, I'd definitely give Mint or Visible a shot. Visible has unlimited Hotspot as well, I believe, if that is of importance.

$22 every 3 months for my limited Tracfone account.

Works great for those who almost never use their phone.

We looked at switching to Visible, but it would have only saved us about $10 per month. RN I have 2 lines through Verizon, my wife's work gives us a discount, and we usually get around $40 off per month from our Verizon card that we only use for groceries. Usually is around $90/month for unlimited. Same plan through visible would have us around $75-80 IIRC.

The hassle of setting up 2 different accounts, getting an eSim, and switching 2 phones and closing an account didn't seem worth it.

When I upgraded my watch recently I got the cellular version. Should have checked first. Tracfone doesn't offer an add-on for watches. Stand-alone providers exist but aren't that cheap and/or sound dodgy.

So anyway, I'd be interested to hear stories about cellular on watches. Preferably success stories that won't break the bank.

I would consider switching to a different provider if the phone+watch plan works well and isn't too expensive.

I used one a decade ago, I forget the name. It worked perfectly fine. Then Verizon revamped their rates and their price was the same as what we had and better network, so moved back. I looked into Visible but my phone doesn't qualify, it says.

That's the key to saving money on whatever phone plan you pursue. Own your phone. They make bank by charging you more than the phone's cost over the life of your service because people don't pay attention.

I have cellular for my apple watch. I like being able to leave the phone at home. Costs me less than $10 month on verizon.

I’ve said it before on the cell phone posts, I have US Mobile, $25 per line unlimited everything on Verizon network. They also have reimbursements for subscriptions like Netflix etc, so 2 lines are only like $10/mo after this. Never had coverage or throttling issues, but I’m on WiFi a lot. They do offer a smart watch option that I haven’t tried for like $7/ mo

I and the no-pic Mrs. use Mint. Reportedly uses TMobile network. No problems whatsoever and enjoying the savings.
