Does B10 officiating hurt B10 team in NCAA Tourney?

I thought I heard the other day that it has been 20 years since a B10 team won the NCAA Tourney.

The way the Big 10 is officiated is quite different then other conferences and even the NBA.

It is inconsistent and there is so much hand checking, holding, grabbing, illegal screens, etc...

I think B10 teams have to make big time adjustments in the tourney.

It is a disadvantage to them to play under B10 officiating all year then have to adjust to
totally different enforcement of the rules it the tourney.

No.

But fanbases, players, and coaches that complain about officiating can hurt the officiating of their team's games

I think it hurts the seeding of BIG teams in the tourney.

Do a conference breakdown of Sweet 16, Elite 8 and Final 4? Where does the B1G fall?

Years ago it was always said that the Big 10 was at a disadvantage because they allowed rough play and the tournament was called much tighter. Lately, as in the last 10-15 years, I don’t think that’s the case.

21 years since a Big Ten team won the title. MSU in 2000.
19 years since a school currently in the Big Ten won the title. Maryland in 2002.

To your question. A ton of Big Ten teams have made the Final Four in the last 21 years. So I don't think reffing is hurting that much. It is just that a there's been a bad run of coming out on the wrong end of the score too often. Big Ten teams have lost 7 times by an average margin of 10 points in the title game since MSU's win. A few blowout losses, but several close ones too. Plus Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Nova, Florida, and UConn have all won multiple titles in that stretch with really good teams.

The Pac-12 hasn't won a title since Arizona in 1997 and the Big 12 has had one 2008 Kansas title since their last previous win in 1988.

What bad reffing does do is hurt the Big Ten in bids and seeding for middle of the pack teams that probably have no shot at the NCAA title. When the usual suspects of "mugging defense" are allowed to get away with that and steal a few wins from middle of the pack teams, it hurts those teams in making the tourney or getting stuck with a 7 or 8 seed instead of a 5 or 6 seed. All you have to do is go back to the BTT game against MSU that we lost because MSU was allowed to do whatever they wanted to us. We win that game and we're in the NCAAs instead of the NIT.

Probably the best answer.

What’s amazing is since last time BIG 10 team won is the number of times they’ve finished runner up and loser of the title game.

Michigan st, Michigan x2, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio st.

was an interesting article in the Athletic discussing lack of Big Ten tourney success and pointing out their total lack of 5 star recruits, 1st round picks, etc the last 20 years indicating a lack of elite talent.

Overall conference is very strong, but hasn't quite had the top end teams to win it all. Throw in some bad luck and bad matchups. 2005 Illinois was elite and got nipped by equally elite UNC. 2015 Wisconsin was awesome and got nipped by a great Duke team.

I like to think 2013 Michigan was pretty good and lost a close one to Louisville who later vacated that game due to NCAA sanctions.

Throw a little luck on the Big Ten's side and they might have 2 or 3 titles the last 20 years and nobody is having this conversation. But overall they have had a good bit less top recruits and 1st round picks compared to other conferences.

On the other hand if you include all the game before the title game the Big Ten has been just fine. From T-rank, the Big Ten ranks #1 amongst all conferences (since 2000) in terms of outperforming their tournament seeding, is in a 3 way tie with ACC and BE for most teams advancing to the 2nd round, #2 in sweet 16 teams, #3 in Elite 8 teams, #1 in Final Four teams, and #2 in title game appearances. So it isn't like Big Ten teams aren't winning a ton of NCAA tournament games. They just happen to have come up short on Monday night.
