Does Lester already have his QB? Lester discusses Hank Brown & Jimmy Sullivan. Lester likes to have 5 or 6 QBs

Sounds like IOWA had the NIL money for Pribula.

Beau, however, liked the Mizzou offensive scheme better than the IOWA offensive scheme.

Does Lester already have his QB?
If Lester is completely happy with the QBs already on campus why spend the time and effort on Pribula? Aren't there other positions that the coaching staff could have been focusing on?

Not sure this is an indication of anything. Of course TL is going to hype up the guys he has. I certainly don't expect him to go on a podcast and say "Well, sh*t, we couldn't get who I REALLY wanted from the portal, so I guess we're stuck with these guys."

I like TL for the most part so far, and I trust him a heck of a lot more than I did his predecessor, and I firmly believe that he worked hard to get Pribula here and considers losing out on his recruitment to be a big, big loss.

Probably so.

For sure far more that we don't know than we do. They took a shot at Pribula and it didn't fly. You can't ignore that Lester has far more to work with than he did last spring. The fact that he feels excited about Jimmy Sullivan who he didn't recruit seems a real positive.

Lester has already said he won't do any recruiting in the spring and focus on coaching. He has a track record to draw from and it seems a safe bet to feel confident in his ability to develop quarterbacks. We might get more help in the portal or we may not. I think Lester will start out at a good place in the spring with what he has to work with now.

Maybe Pribula was told he would have to start at the bottom of the depth chart or behind certain ones and would have to work his way up. Might have then remembered KFs past stands on sticking w/ his guy b/c "said guy" gives them the best chance to win.
CM was installed as No. 1 practically as soon as he walked in the door. No idea why they wouldn't have treated Pribula the same way.

Lester and Kirk may have learned something from what they went through with Cade. We have them both saying now they want an open competition in the spring. If they can still add to the competition they will. It might not have appealed to Pribula.

If they truly told Pribula that he was going to have to fight his way up from 4th/5th string to start next year, knowing full well there would be 100 other programs telling Pribula the opposite, both of them really shot themselves in the foot. As far as I'm concerned, we have no reason to believe that's how it went down.

Not to mention, if competition didn't appeal to Pribula, he probably would have gone to a G5 school.

Pribula could have come in here and earned the starting position. Hank Brown and Jimmy Sullivan who Lester seems to really like have the same opportunity. Coming in new doesn't relegate any of the QBs to the bottom of the pecking order.

Kirk and Lester want an open competition. The reason I really like Brendan Sullivan he relishes the competition and plans to stay a Hawkeye.

Cade had minimal competition so of course he would enter as QB1. Petras was basically coaching and Padilla transferred (as did May), leaving Labas and the incoming Lainez with Hill as a later addition.

They paid CM a boatload of money because they expected him to come in and start. He came in and started, no I don't particularly care that his competition was a bunch of stiffs. Had the coaches gotten Pribula they would have paid him a boatload of money and expected him to come in and start. He would have started. I don't understand why this is difficult.

I don't ever come here to argue but let me offer a different take. How do we know the coaches would have expected him to start? They obviously didn't offer a boatload of money and Pribula moved on. Pribula gave a tactful response and said he liked the Missouri offense better. Right now all signs point to Iowa not wanting to bring in a designated starter. Tim Lester wants more QBs to compete.

Does anyone really believe that? I think Pribula has seen / heard for himself and when not given the same concessions as McNamara was when he came, made the decision to go to Mizzou.
I list evidence over the past 2 years of 'coach speak', 'lip service'. If there was time and space I could go back to Christensen and Stanzi, Ruddock and Beathard. KF has a history of sticking w/ QBs too long. Iowa will not get a game changing QB transfer until KF has the wins record and retires.
(btw - I like B Sullivan and think he will be fine)

IOWA CITY — The Big Ten Network has made stops around the conference

“Some ups and downs, which is kinda expected," Ferentz told Ashley Adamson and Gerry DiNardo. "On Cade’s (McNamara) case, he’s missed two years, basically. He’s thrown 7-on-7, things like that but it’s still not real football. You have to get out there and you have to operate. You’ve got to be on the field with 11 people on your side and their side. So I think he’s really making progress right now. Every snap right now in my mind is important for him. I think he’s having a good week this week and hopefully, we just keep pushing that forward."
Unofficially, McNamara went 8-for-24 for 20 yards and one interception, which would likely have been a pick-six. ...Still, it wasn’t a great sign that McNamara struggled to that magnitude. Northwestern transfer Brendan Sullivan played better than McNamara, though he still wasn’t overly impressive.

After disastrous quarterback play last season, that position group is a major question mark surrounding Iowa entering the 2024 campaign.
With multiple opportunities to do so, Ferentz and the staff have still not yet publicly announced a starting quarterback. McNamara entered fall camp as QB1 but if Kids Day at Kinnick was an accurate indication of where the competition stands, Sullivan is not out of the race.
“Those two guys have been battling — Cade and (Sullivan)," Lester told Adamson and DiNardo. "Cade’s really had a good week this week

Oct 6, '24 after loss to Ohio State (game #5)

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz made his view of the quarterback position pretty clear after Saturday's 35-7 loss at Ohio State.

No, the Hawkeyes are not headed for a change at quarterback, Ferentz said.

“We’re not ready, I think, to have a controversy at that position,” the longtime head coach said.
The quarterback position wasn't good enough on Saturday. Cade McNamara finished the game 14-of-20 passing for 98 yards and three turnovers — two fumbles and one interception. Just like the game itself, the quarterback play fit an old, tired narrative.
Since the 2019 departure of Nate Stanley, Iowa’s quarterback struggles have been no secret. Whether it be Spencer Petras or Alex Padilla or Deacon Hill, Iowa hasn’t gotten necessary production from that position.
The lack of ball security was a reason the quarterback position was such a disaster at Iowa last season. Hill finished the season with a ratio of eight interceptions to five passing touchdowns.
“We evaluate every position week to week,” Ferentz said about quarterback. “But we’re comfortable. I think Cade’s improving. I really do. It sounds funny with the turnovers today, I think he seems more comfortable. His timing seems better. And he was getting the ball out really well in the first half.
You can argue ad nauseam against Ferentz’s assertion that McNamara is improving. But bottom line is, the fact that this is even a discussion is a problem. It was reasonable to think that McNamara would've been better than this through five games.
Through the first 10 games of his Iowa career— McNamara hasn’t done much to validate the excitement that once surrounded him. Ferentz has preached patience for someone who has been out for an extended period — on multiple occasions.

But time is becoming of the essence for McNamara to change the narrative.

Said Ferentz: "Cade will be fine.”

Oct 22, '24 John Bohnenkamp after loss to Michigan State (game #7)
The questions about the future of the Hawkeyes’ quarterback spot came at coach Kirk Ferentz again on Tuesday, and while backup quarterback Brendan Sullivan might get some more opportunities in Saturday’s game against Northwestern at Kinnick Stadium, the starting job still belongs to McNamara.
I think probably the biggest thing is it's easier to talk about putting somebody in a game than just doing it, especially at that position,” he said. “We've seen enough good things out of Cade to feel like he gives us our best chance out there.
The critics will say that Ferentz isn’t flexible with his loyalty at the starting quarterback spot. But he knows that the inconsistency with Iowa’s offense can’t continue.

“We'll keep an open mind, but I have confidence in both of them, quite frankly, and when Brendan gets an expanded role or if he gets an expanded role, I think he'll do well,” Ferentz said.

Nov 4, '23 Josh Helmer loss to Minnesota

Iowa finished with just 127 yards of total offense, including only 12 yards after halftime. For the second time in the past two seasons, Iowa lost a game where its defense didn’t surrender a touchdown to the opposition. All of this was the final tipping point in Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz being informed by interim athletics director Beth Goetz that we would not be returning
For the season, Hill
is completing only 37.8% of his passes with 427 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes against three interceptions. The 6-foot-3, 258 pound sophomore , has an 8.4 quarterback rating.

Despite his struggles, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz said Hill is still the team’s unquestioned No. 1 signal-caller entering this afternoon’s date against Northwestern. Joe Labas is Iowa’s No. 2 quarterback.

“We’ve looked at every position and let everybody compete and let everybody practice. Again, the older guys are more experienced. I think they got some work last week, but not to the extent of a normal practice week, I would say. The quarterback position, it’s a clear 1, 2, 3, and we’ll keep an open mind as we move forward,” Ferentz said.
Hill ranks 160th out of 160 FBS quarterbacks with at least 78 drop-backs in Pro Football Focus’ offensive grade and “turnover-worthy plays.”

Leistikow then asked Ferentz how Hill remains Iowa’s No. 1 quarterback with that high of a turnover possibility. Or, are the other quarterbacks that bad?

“Well, those are your words, not mine certainly. It isn’t that bad. They’re playing major college football. Again, we go through. We’ve been evaluating since the start of spring practice. You look at the body of work. Believe it or not, at least I think we know a little bit more about our guys
because we see a lot more.

Apr 23, '22 Chloe Peterson - Iowa Spring Scrimmage
Head coach Kirk Ferentz said in February that Petras, Padilla, and Labas would be in an open competition throughout spring practice for the role of the starting playcaller.

“The quarterback play, it’s elite at the moment,” senior tight end Sam LaPorta said. “I feel really strongly about all the guys in the room and, you know, I’m excited.”
The Hawkeye quarterbacks had 15 practices throughout the spring session to prove their worth for the starting role. After the final spring practice, Ferentz said Petras, Iowa’s two-year starter, is the leader of the competition.
“Overall, yeah,” Ferentz said when asked if Petras is the frontrunner. “
But we’re going to keep an open mind.
Petras took the vast majority of first-team reps when Iowa scrimmaged on Duke Slater Field Saturday morning. Padilla stepped in for Petras on one snap, completing a handoff before Petras took over again.
Petras overthrew multiple passes as he drove the Hawkeyes downfield, and settled for a field goal on his sole drive of the morning.
Padilla stepped in with the second team Hawkeye squad after Petras finished on the field. With a quick release, Padilla finished his drive in with the second teamers, finding the north end zone.
Iowa had a slight quarterback competition during the 2021-22 season between Padilla and Petras. Padilla started three games in the back half of the season when Petras started to struggle with accuracy — partly because of a shoulder injury.
