Drake

Season sweep over mini-Michigan State. Considering swinging down to Arch Madness this year. Not convinced DeVries will be there much longer unfortunately. Schools are gonna be opening up the checkbook for him and his son.
Tucker is tough as nails and good on offense

Any of the top 4 teams can win it. Both UNI and Drake have the shortest bench, Penn and Hemphill don’t even practice during the week as both are playing with broken feet. Still think Drake is the most talented team, just not the healthiest, which makes it tough to win 3 games in 3 days. St Louis should be fun. Love to see someone knock Loyola out as they’re leaving the conference. I think Drake is going to need some big donors hopefully to keep DeVries. He’s done one helluva job.

UNI and Drake are excellent basketball teams. I really enjoy watching them, and I absolutely loved seeing Drake take everything Loyola threw at them and come away with a huge win on the road. It's a total failure on the part of Iowa that the Hawkeyes refuse to play Drake and UNI. Those would be great games for everyone. I'd even like to see Iowa play ISU, Drake, and UNI home-and-home every season. I'm sick of Iowa playing teams like North Carolina Central, Alabama State, Portland State, Western Illinois while they have highly competitive teams like UNI and Drake in their own backyard. Are the Hawkeyes afraid to play two outstanding mid-majors in their own state? Makes no sense, IMHO.

BTW: Yes, I know about the debacle at the McLeod Center several years ago. That's no excuse. If it were, Iowa would never travel to East Lansing, West Lafayette, Madison, Bloomington, or most other venues in the Big Ten. Get over it already.

Well said. It’s the new culture. Nothing to gai and everything to lose so we’re not going to play them. But we’ll play Alabama State.

Needs to be a 2-day annual event at one of the schools. For example, Iowa plays Drake and UNI plays isu. The winners (and losers) play the next night. The FOLLOWING year, the team you DID NOT play the previous year will be the first round opponent. Next night winners (and losers) play.

To determine which site is the host, have the first one in DM (central location). The following year and every year after, the WINNER of the previous year is the host. As long as your team is the winner, they are the host.

We all know it’s a money driven world and there is nothing at all to be gained for the big 2 to travel to the little 2–win, you were supposed to. Lose, you’re embarrassed and didn’t get the revenue. Sadly that’s the deal. I don’t blame the big 2 at all. It’s fun when the little 2 are good but it does absolutely nothing for the big 2.

I like the idea of doing an annual all Iowa tournament but no way should it be in Cedar Falls. Either alternate Hilton and Carver, it would replace the Iowa/ISU home and away game, or put it in Wells Fargo Arena.

I don't really care about UNI or Drake and it was a smart move to cancel the home and home series. UNI has an odd "dome" stadium which affects depth of perception on shooting the B-ball and they had their own MVC refs which made winning on the road at their place much more difficult than RPI would suggest it to be---it was a no win situation........the refs helped UNI steal a game one year at the dome and I think that was the end of the series.

Iowa does need to be more active in these neutral site B-ball tournaments where they can play better competition before B1G.

UNI hasn’t played at the dome since 2006 I believe.

Murray State is joining the Missouri Valley this summer and are ranked 22nd or so with only 2 losses. Appears to be a good addition basketball wise.

I also miss the Creighton series we had back in the late 90's. Creighton swept us and never scheduled again. We did get revenge in ncaa tourney though. Creighton used to have a lot of Iowa kids on their rosters so was fun to watch.

Am I the only one who cheers for Drake but not UNI? I'm from Cedar Falls and used to go to a ton of games. Just soured on them.
I pull for whichever one is having the better season. Right now I probably pull for Drake more than UNI. More fun to watch. I went to Drake-Missouri St game last week. I make a couple Drake games a year.
UNI has become frustrating.
2016 Biggest choke job in NCAA history.
2019 Largest lead ever blown in MVC Championship game
2020-First one seed to lose to a eight seed
Hopefully one of them win MVC tournament.

While I agree with most of your post (which is unusual because I rarely agree with your point of view) the fact that you think UNI still plays in the dome explains why I routinely disagree with. You really don’t follow very closely.

Going to the Atlantic 10, which good riddance. They were Drake level bad for 35 years and have a nice 5 year stretch and leaving. Adding Murray St and Belmont which are both great additions.

DAMN! Since when has the Atlantic 10 a better conference than the Missouri Valley? I hope they enjoy all the extra travel expenses.

The local fan base seems fairly apathetic towards men’s hoops. They get little student support (sound familiar?) and have to beg fans to come to the McLeod Center. They have run promos for 5 dollar tickets which is cheaper than going to a post season high school game. Hell, I live less than 10 minutes away from McLeod but have zero interest in going.

I dont get it. There usually near the top of the standings so i ask why? I went to drake game and was almost packed house and enjoyed the game. To bad because AJ Green is worth the ticket IMO.

I knew they were leaving but didn't know Murray St. and Belmont added. That makes the conference much tougher.

I don’t have the answer to that. Certainly there is a core group that support Panther athletics and basketball in particular, there is just no excitement around the program. And yes AJ is unreal. I saw him play a ton in hs and it still blows me that he went to UNI. He could have been playing away games in Cameron Indoor or the Dean Dome, instead he’s playing in Peoria and Carbondale. I know Kyle was there at the time but he had much bigger and IMO, better opportunities.

I would like to see an all Iowa tourney with the four schools played in Des Moines every year. I realize it would be a scheduling nightmare but it would become a big sporting event for the State of Iowa.

UNI destroys Mo St today. At Indiana State is no gimme, but assuming UNI wiins that, it all comes down to next Sat at 5pm vs Loyola at the McLeod Center. Go Panthers!

The Belmont and Murray state additions are fabulous for that conference!
Can we trade commissioners?

Eh I really don’t think so. The Big 4 classic was an attempt but it always felt forced and awkward.

Speaking as a Drake fan, their AD has really done a solid job with his two basketball hires and has done a really good job with pushing the “Des Moines team” marketing approach. The games against Loyola, UNI, and Mo State were packed and place was rocking.

But I still don’t believe DeVries will be there much longer.

But yes Murray St and Belmont are awesome additions to the MVC. I think Loyola will get smacked around pretty good in the A10 and I’m not convinced Valentine is gonna be a great coach. Too early to tell.

I'm fine with Hawks playing Drake and UNI on a regular basis, but only if it's in CHA. I don't care if they are instate schools, neither warrant going to their place for a game.
