*****Iowa vs Drake Game Thread*****

WTF… Dinnebier at the line again!!
Iowa basketball IQ poor vs Dinnebier. The last thing you want to do is put her on the line...this should have been a scouting emphasis. She had 40 points and only put up 17 shots...model of efficency.

It didn't matter what they did in the second half, she was going to the line whether there was contact or not. Idk how it sounded on TV but it was funny to me to hear boos rain down when a call went for the home team. Good work fellow Hawk fans for buying up the upper deck seats.

There were multiple occasions where she flopped to the ground, a ref saw her on the ground with zero view of any contact and called a foul. I was 6 rows up behind basket and had a much better view than bald ref who just assumed contact every play. Lucy had two clean blocks they called fouls.

Impressive win.. this team took Iowa to OT 2 years ago and played us tough last year as well.

Addi was great but was definitely wind at points late. Got to mix in Ava. Ogrady needs rest and Mallegni needs reigned in a little.. foul troubles an issue 2 straight game.

McCabe sharp shooting off the bench 2 straight games.

Affolter not aggressive.. hopefully knee wasn’t holding her back. Again got to get Stremlow some minutes if Affolter isn’t 100%

All in all a great win on the road that somehow felt close, but also felt like we very easily could’ve took this game by a wide margin at the same time.

I was there. Lucy was grinning ear to ear when the crowd started chanting Let's Go Hawks!

I think it had as much to do with the refs letting Drake flop on very minimal contact and calling fouls. There were a number of her "fouls drawn" where there was almost no contact, and she's flopping on the floor, nnot to mention she was so gassed in the fourth that even minimal contact knocked her off her feet and right back to the line.

When the opponent chucks up that many 3’s those long rebounds are just being in the right spot. Luck of the draw I guess.

40 of their 63 FG attempts were from 3.

They only made 5 two point FGs but shot 32 free throws.

24 of their 73 pts came from the charity stripe.

Crazy ass game.

How Drake got to 73 points:

13-40 (32%) from 3
5-23 (22%) from 2
......................................
18-63 (29%) Overall shooting

24-32 (75%) FTs

Is this team better than last years?
Maybe lets wait until we play a few of the 9 or 10 ranked teams were going to face. We're a LONG way from answering that question. I take some solace that Syd, Hannah, AOG, Kylie, and McCabe have played all the way to two B1G tourney titles, and two National championship games. That experience should prove invaluable during the season. Still when you lose a player that can go out in almost any game, and get or create 8-10 points in just a few possessions is a big lose.

5 Iowa players with 4 fouls. Drake with 1. Didn’t get a chance to watch, but seems uneven. If it was as you describe, refs for women’s games are notorious for anticipatory fouls and after-the-fact guesses at what happened.

🧐🤔
Still just scratching the surface 😎
I think that we're still seeing the pieces coming together.
  • The progression we've been seeing from O'Grady is very heartening.
  • We need to see better consistency from pretty much everybody
  • The young players obviously have a ways to come ... but I think that what we're seeing is still quite promising.
  • Syd is playing tentatively ... probably doesn't yet trust her knee. Consistent play, more of the caliber we saw of the tournament ... that's what we need to see from her.
  • I think that it is pretty clear that Jan and the staff are still "feeling around" and seeing what they have personnel-wise. Furthermore, I think that part of this process is having them get a clearer picture about how they want to use what they have too.
Anyhow, the point being that the Hawks have a decent upside and they can continue to grow/improve. It will be interesting to see how the progression plays out on the court.

I'm not worrying about better or worse than last year. This team will have some mind blowing loses and probably some awesome wins. As stated above, we won't know for awhile.

I'm really excited for this team and am very cautiously optimistic about the men's team.

We will learn a lot over the next month, imo.

Upcoming Schedule:

Nov 20 vs Kansas (Sioux Falls, SD)
Nov 24 vs Washington St
Nov 28 vs Rhode Island (Cancun)
Nov 29 vs BYU (Cancun)
Dec 7 vs Tennessee (Brooklyn, NY)
Dec 11 vs Iowa State
Dec 15 at Michigan State
Dec 20 vs Northern Iowa

No way do I wanna see mallegani reign it in. I love how she's not afraid to shoot it or take it to the hole. She is going to be very very good

Only their 4th game, players and coach. They are all in a process of figuring it out, and that will continue game to game.

It's not uncommon for college players to look different year to year with experience and improvement, so not a big surprise to see a player like O'Grady playing better.

Mallegni really needed that confidence boost from hitting some shots today. Just a freshman. Imagine where she will be by January. For that matter, the whole team could look dramatically better by then. They better, because the Big Ten will have great players on the court.

I thought the refs called a fair game. Sooo much better to watch as a fan than whatever they are officiating in the WNBA--and that goes for every college game I've watched so far this season. (Only call I didn't like was the tech on Olsen.)

Tighter, more aggressive defense will always result in more fouls, so I'm not surprised by the foul numbers. That will be a thing with this team, and perhaps Dinnibier has put down a blueprint for attacking the Iowa D, but safe to say not every player can put up a near 40.

Kansas, Tennessee, and ISU coming up. Winning those two could really start something. Hoping for 2 of 3.

I am also hopeful for her. I thought she was shooting threes pretty good so far, but announcers said she was 1 for 10 most recently. Lots of potential.

Miller’s shooting percentage from the field coming into the game was above 53% on the season. After this game, it was below 40% for the year. 😆

This was a very good win. This is also a good game film to get things corrected that’s for damn sure. A game like this will benefit us down the road. Jan, you must get this corrected.

Assuming Stanford were to drop, TCU will likely hop Iowa after beating NCSt. Still a few wins away from getting the boost.

The refs were horrendous IMO

Usually when a team shoots a lot of 3’s they don’t shoot many FT’s. Not yesterday. Ridiculous.

Great highlight edit of the game--taken from under the basket, really puts you there. Shots of the bench, Caitlin Clark in the stands.

*Drake was lighting it up from 3. That's hard to get through on the road, and maybe the biggest takeaway for Iowa, the way they stayed the course and found their runs.

*CC22 ready to get on the court at 9:17!

*The Olsen assist right after at 9:40. Sweet drop pass. Announcers thought she got stuffed.

*Enthusiasm from the bench is great to see.

Exactly. I hope they find more minutes for Heiden to not only get more experience but to keep her engaged.
Pulling Heiden out of the rotation will be a HUGE mistake. Only 2 minutes yesterday.

Going from starter to bench warmer in just a few weeks is a lot to put on a true freshman. Ava did not look very happy.

I hope this changes next game.
